Kris.Kringle - You have seen the story a million times before. It's a VERY common and simple story - the false idol arc, the "broken pedestal" trope. You've seen it in both animated and live-action movies. A character meets his hero, and finds out his hero is not who he hoped he would be. A more prominent example would be Luke Skywalker, who has his father built up by Obi-Wan as this great Jedi who was cut down in the prime of his life, only to find out his father is, well, you know the rest of that. As they say, nothing is truly original, it's what you do with it that is important. And I think GotG2 is just fine.

I know I'm like two years late on this but the fact that there was no courting thing between Quill and Ego fit pretty well in my opinion. Ego is ultimately a raging sociopath and he just can't muster the ability to give a shit about normal people. The facade slips for a moment, and this is revealed, but it's not like he's revelling in how evil he is, he feels justified and he explains himself as if he's perfectly reasonable. He was expecting Quill to understand, because he doesn't understand people as well as he thinks he does, because he's a monstrous, charismatic sociopath. Quill reacts immediately, there's no hesitation, there's no internal contemplation because Quill isn't an introspective character. It's part of what makes him the big damn hero and it's what sets him apart from a lot of other characters. I thought the subversion of expectation there was great, the way he just shoots Ego without a second though, because it sets Peter's character very firmly in stone. This is something that becomes very relevant in Infinity War, when Peter's lack of forethought and self control ends up causing shit to go so badly. Or something. I dunno. Nobody's going to read this, but everyone else is throwing their bottled messages out into the sea, why not join in.

I'm surprised RLM didn't bring him up, he was the MVP of the film in my eyes, him calling Mantis (who's adorable) ugly over and over was hilarious. I agree though, he probably had the most heartfelt moment for me when he was going down memory lane next to Mantis
@ElRook7 жыл бұрын
Derek Woods he establishes the theme, too, with how you can trust people who are ugly. Yondu might not be a space god or David Hasselhoff, really, but in the end he's the one that loved Quill. Also a nice touch that all during the movie Groot is kicking Drax, but at the funeral he wants to be held by Drax (who out of the team has been a father).

The whole reason they cut suicide squad the way they did with all the pop songs was to ape off of Guardians when focus groups said it was too dark. It's basically what Mike said about Deadpool where the execs see something and don't understand what made it good, so they make some horrible abomination.
@roetheboat17 жыл бұрын
I remember when the first trailer for Suicide Squad came out and had that decently creepy song "I Started A Joke". It worked in that. THEN you had Deadpool, which was a huge success, and the next trailer that came out for Suicide Squad had "Bohemian Rhapsody". It was at that moment I realized that Suicide Squad was going to be a huge failure. What I've noticed is that if a trailer has a popular song that does not actually relate to what is happening in the movie, then chances are the movie is going to suck. "Bohemian Rhapsody" didn't have anything that matched with Suicide Squad. "The Chain" actually has a really big connection with GotG 2. "Come Together" has a minimal connection with Justice League, but if you listen to the song it's actually about some crazy coked out homeless guy dancing. The message is: Stay true to your vision for the movie. Don't try to mix in what you think is popular for the price of having a good story.
@TAluclaire7 жыл бұрын
On the point about Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel ceiling fresco, he actually did take shit from religious authorities who thought he used too much nudity in his work and that it was unbecoming of art for the Vatican. He also didn't paint the entire ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by himself, artists would typically have assistants and apprentices help them on large projects. The most iconic part with God and Adam doing the finger-touching was all Michelangelo, though. But yeah, in Renaissance Italy there definitely was art that was created by committees of overbearing patrons harassing groups of no-name artists they could control, but that art typically isn't the stuff we remember. Feel free to make comparisons to the modern film industry.

My favorite Expanded-linked-cinematic-connected-franchise universe is the RLM-verse. The Rich Evans fan service scenes are spectacular and the vistas are immaculate. I'm still disappointed though that we have not received a spin-off explaining how Jay got his beard or a film explaining why Mike always mentions Star Trek. Even though 75% of the films are filler solo films that fill the gap between RLMs' Nerd Crew films the verse is still 11/10.
@zbh92687 жыл бұрын
Hollywood could learn some things from the RLM cinematic universe. At least their content is funny, fresh, relevant, unpredictable and most of all totally one of a kind. Let's see Hollywood's shit-o-matic universes do that.

One of the main differences with the music in GotG movies and other movies is that in GotG the majority of the the songs are Diegetic, meaning that the music has a on-screen source and the characters can hear it. That adds a lot to the use of songs in a movie.
@ok59166 жыл бұрын
I fuckin hate it when there’s sampled songs in movies that don’t fit in. It just ruins the immersion for me
@roetheboat16 жыл бұрын
Another important difference is that Gunn does an incredible job at making sure the songs he uses actually add layers to the scene. Normally, you wouldn't think that "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac would work well in the final action scene where the embodiment of an entire planet and his immature son are duking it out. But it does. Because of how well Starlord's character had been established, the song enhanced the scene instead of just acting as something catchy. Suicide Squad is probably an excellent counter-example. You can't just throw in popular music and expect it to work. It has to actually match, or else you just come off looking cheap. The instant I saw that second trailer for Suicide Squad where they had "Bohemian Rhapsody", I knew the movie was going to suck. The trailer company did a great job in syncing up the music to the images, but it was overall a failure because the song they used didn't really have anything to do with the characters.

No hype, no expectations, no comparison, no anger on adaptation. If I already know about the source material, I try to throw it all out and let things be themselves. It has worked well. My point is just that no matter what, we take Redlettermedia's sentiment to heart. I don't give a shit about any of this... is it a good movie?!? I love GotG because, it is indeed a very good film. I have no clue if it has anything to do with the comics, nor do I care. In that reguard, this franchise has more room to grow than Spiderman, Superman, Star Wars or anything else like that. It isn't necessarily a prisoner of the source.

Rewatching and ironically Jay's one complaint of dropping the Nebula plot became a lynch pin for Infinity War. That's the thing about the MCU you think a story thread is unneeded and than bam important.

I just watched this film last night, and one thing I noticed was how Marvel seems to be moving more towards the surreal. And I'm loving it. Like Doctor Strange had many strange moments (especially the sequence when he was being launched through dimensions), and like RedLetter mentioned Thor: Ragnorok. It's almost like they're pulling from the 60's comic books, and it's making the films so much more colorful and... strange, and it's just great. I have high hopes for the next couple of years of marvel.

yes man, after Jay said that about Thanos, I laughed out loud and said "Oh Jay..."
@guyr36185 жыл бұрын
After watching the way Endgame mishandled Gamora & Thanos, I definitely agree with Jay and Mike here. Thanos ended up being such a lame one-note monster, and the Russos just threw Gamora's entire character-development into the garbage.
@liaspooked49805 жыл бұрын
@@guyr3618 I haven't watched Endgame , because tbh I don't really care much about marvel movies, they just aren't really my type. About thanos being a one dimensional character or not, I can't really give my opinion on that. However, I think no one can deny that he had a massive effect on the marvel cinematic universe, and was, in the context of the movies, an extremely powerful and fearsome enemy. I think it's both interesting and funny how Jay (as well as most people) underestimated Thanos, asking how such a weird looking purple guy could ever pose a threat. It's fun to look back from now, in a world where both infinity war and endgame already came out, at how expectations were different before the movies were released.

This movie has so many different relationship and personality themes that it's bound to resonate with you on some level. It's pretty genius writing. Also every performance and the script are very clever and intentioned (apparently that's not a word. I hope you get he gist of it.). Add a Hollywood budget and a sci-fi theme. It's gold! James Gunn should be in charge of every wacky franchise. James' N' Gunn's Pirates of The Caribbean. I have this sort of expectation from Taika Waititi's Thor Ragnarok. Jay Baumann had this with James Gunn, he knew him when he was doing cheap masterpieces and now he gets budgetary freedom to keep doing what he wants. Taika Waititi is my James Gunn. That's why I have actively avoided every single bit of info on Thor Ragnarok. I want to come in fresh to it. As I did with this one. I think Thor could rise to be a Guardians level of franchise with Taika Waititi in creative control. He can get nuts.

TheMemoman brilliant writing? Nah. Funny? That's arguable, I only chuckled at like two scenes in the film but it wasn't borderline hilarious. I still had fun with it though and it feels like this movie has more personality than most superhero films nowadays

I love how both Jay and Mike really did not care about seeing Infinity War and could not care less about Thanos. I felt exactly the same way and it turned out to be a great film where Thanos was the best damn part. Also the Guardians scenes in Infinity War were as good as these movies. Probably because James Gunn helped write them....I'm so happy he'll be back for Guardians 3!

@emmittmorgans80767 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but he was only given a "story by" credit for 'The Avengers', so I'm guessing the fact that Nicole Perlman was given a "co-written by" credit means that she made much larger contributions to the original 'Guardians' script. We all know the corporate overlords co-butchered the 'Age of Ultron' script... not that it was likely to be much better.
@VakieF17 жыл бұрын
The credit doesn't mean Perlman made larger contributions, it means she wrote the first script for the film and per WGA rules has to be credited for it even if Gunn didn't use one word of her script in the shooting script he himself wrote. (Which is what happened, by all accounts.)
@ghostapostle72257 жыл бұрын
Sensitive Joss Whedon?
@tinal.55857 жыл бұрын
Perlman just wrote the first script which obviously wasn't good and needed a re-write so I'm really happy Gunn came in and punched things up. She also wrote a script for Captain Marvel which is getting retooled so she's obviously not a good writer.

I wonder how much of what makes this film so memorable has to do with the deliberate use of numerous running jokes. The repetition definitely reduces characters to specific character traits and helps audiences remember plot points and key characterisation moments.
