Mehldau's polyphonic solo is so irresistible. Intense and gentle at the same time. Bloody genius.

The melody sounds like McCoy Tyner's piece "Three Flowers" and that tune Coltrane used to play, "Inch Worm."

Mehldau and McBride are the absolute standouts for me. For my taste Blade over plays, but many will disagree. But the biggest disappointment is the sound quality of these amateur phone recordings. The recording quality is appalling. This stone-age stuff does nobody any favours.

It actually does all of us a favour. We can listen to these legends, make opinion and share it with others. And the recording quality of modern phones is astounding. This particular video may not win any competition, but it's recorded from the balcony on the side of the theater, a place as far away from the sweet spot as it gets. It's still pretty impressive that some random guy with a cellphone can make it happen.

Actually it doesn’t do us all a favour. Classical concerts ban phones as do many of the worlds best musicians of a variety of genres. Keith Jarrett, probably one the best jazz pianists ever, refused to play if there was one cell phone in evidence. I’m with him. These musician’s lives are are dependent on the quality of sound they make. These ridiculous over reverberant amateur recordings do nobody any favours.

@@griffotBut they literally do. We wouldn’t have been able to hear this or countless other fantastic music performances if they weren’t bootlegged. Get with the time dude. And yeah Keith Jarrett may be one of the best but he’s also known to be have a pretty big ego so I wouldn’t take his intense irritability towards people recording his playing very seriously if I were you.
@griffot2 жыл бұрын
@@romanwyatt9994 This has nothing to do with famous bootlegged performances which are invariably sound recordings done with pro equipment and then lost or temporarily forgotten - quite different to someone sitting in the audience with a phone and illegally recording a live performance. What’s the betting that there were warnings about recording on phones before the concert? Also, how would you have liked to be sitting behind this guy with his annoying bright phone screen in your face for the whole concert? Probably he only got away with because he was above the stage in a box. And thank you for the Jarrett warning, the fact is he’s arguably the finest jazz pianist of the last 50 years and if he wants to be perform without the cell phone crowd recording him he has every right, morally and legally, to do so. As I said classical musicians and serious jazz musicians have banned phones and recording devices for years. So I suggest it’s you who should ‘get with the times’ and go back to listening to pop music where phones are mandatory.

@@griffot bootleg was the wrong term. I just meant recording on a phone. I guess I don’t really see why it’s a problem as long as the musicians are credited. As I said we wouldn’t have heard performances like these otherwise so I’m glad it was recorded. I also wouldn’t mind seeing someone in front of me record on their phones. Phone screens don’t bother me. I think you’re just old dude. Quit gate keeping. Also I don’t like pop it’s very very awful in my opinion.
