On my table I'll probably do something for the ogre doors like: any heroes stacked up on the door can add their strength to the roll to lift it, at the cost of their own turn. That way it could accommodate a weaker party, but it will slow them down a bit.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
I think I'm probably going to allow potions, spells and the like. Assistance from adjacent heroes also seems like a good call. I still feel like there has to be a cleaner way to do it, though.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring How about if you manage the roll, you open the door as you open any door. If you fail, you sill open the door, but that was your action for that turn.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
That would help a lot, but doesn't really resolve the issue with a character like the warlock being better at opening doors than the monk. In another comment someone came up with the idea of rolling 2D6 against your body value as a strength test and succeeding if you roll equal to or less. I liked that idea a lot, and added the suggestion of allowing a character to roll against their mind in the same way to open the door with cunning.

I do home-brew HeroQuest. And how I alter the goblin boomerang miniature is if they miss by not rolling any skulls during an attack, the boomerang keeps going until it hits something. Or after hitting its max range it will come back and have a second chance of hitting a hero
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
Nice. I think the bombs and boomerangs do deserve some fun rules. I was thinking maybe bombs could do a one-dice attack on every model adjacent to the target, and for the boomerang, if the attack whiffs (rolls no skulls and therefore the target doesn't need to defend) it gets an immediate second attack as it returns to the thrower.

7:30 I totally agree with the alternate rule for placing Archer variants of enemies! One use case I like is placing more Archer variants in earlier quest books if the party is overgeared for its content. (Say, for example, if you bought expansions out of order and ended up playing Against the Ogre Horde right after the base game only to pick up Kellar's Keep later on.)

@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
In Infiltrating the Fortress of Ogres there is a special type of enemy in one of the rooms. In the original version of the expansion, these enemies had a particular type of weapon. Reference to that weapon has been removed in the new edition (so they didn't have to make new miniatures, I suppose), but they still get the special attack. I will be less vague when I talk about this in my Zargon-only video next week!
@Darkreaper19828 ай бұрын
Loved the original Ogre Horde from the 90's so can't wait to get my hands on this. It is a shame that goblins don't have special rules but you could adapt the rules from Blood Bowl as the Gobin team (among others) have a bombardier player in it that throws bombs. Is a high risk high reward move.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
I was thinking some simple splash damage for the bomb - 2 dice on the target, 1 dice on all adjacent spaces. And for the boomerang a free second attack if the first one misses. That should add a bit of chaos.

To open the Stone Doors you could use a "Body Test". The Hero attempting to open a Stone Door must be in an adjacent square and tests their Body by rolling 2 Red Dice. If the result is equal to or less than the Hero's maximum Body Points the test is passed. If the result is greater than the Hero's maximum Body Points then the test is failed.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
That's a solid idea, and I think it works better than going back to the character's starting attack value, which isn't a true reflection of their strength. To accommodate different teams and keep the game moving, I am thinking maybe a hero could attempt to open a door with strength or cunning, rolling either body or mind, whichever they prefer.
@BabyXiuhcoatl8 ай бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I like the idea of a Wizard or Rogue being able to use a "Mind Test" to open the Stone Doors (as well as many other skill tests in my HQ homebrew) because you could make one card for how Stone Doors are opened and how varying classes can use various means to accomplish this. And they can accomplish it without the need for seperate powers, cards, etc...

Really appreciate your incite and keep up the great videos.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. All of the heroes can be used at any time, so if you don't want to play with the four in the core box, there is no harm in taking heroes from any other expansion and dropping them in. For example, we started our campaign with the original core heroes, then swapped out the dwarf for the rogue heir, and then when we got Mage of the Mirror we immediately started using the elf spells from that expansion. So, we gradually mixed things together as they were released.

Great review! I've gotten my set and can't wait to play! What's your interpretation of non-adjacent for ranged attacks? Does diagonal count as non-adjacent? I don't allow crossbows to be used on all surrounding squares.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. My interpretation for the crossbow goes back to playing the game with the European rules when it first came out - I don't allow the crossbow to attack diagonally adjacent spaces. This seems fair to me, as it means it isn't too overpowered compared to melee weapons that do allow attacks diagonally. However, in the rules in the new Avalon Hill edition under the combat section, they do describe adjacent as being the four orthogonally adjacent spaces. That seems pretty conclusive, but HeroQuest rules have never used the clearest most consistent wording and there are examples throughout the rest of the rules and in subsequent expansions where it implies the use of the word "adjacent" when referring to diagonals. Furthermore, Avalon Hill have refrained from ever giving an official response on the matter, saying HeroQuest is to be played your own way. So, I generally only consider the four spaces orthogonally adjacent to a model to be adjacent, but I still don't allow diagonal attacks with the crossbow because it's already very powerful and my players are happy with that ruling. I think as long as you are consistent with how you rule it, and everybody is in agreement at the table, it doesn't matter all that much.
@ronkhoo8 ай бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring thanks! so to be consistent do you also consider enemy ranged attacks to not apply on diagonally adjacent spaces just like the crossbow? referring to the goblin and orc archer ranged attacks.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
I think if you apply it to the hero's crossbow, you have to apply it to enemy ranged attacks too. I have to say - and this is something I started pondering back when Frozen Horror introduced elf archers - the wording of monsters does reinforce the ruling that diagonally adjacent spaces are acceptable for ranged attacks, as the monsters attack with X dice, or 1 dice on adjacent targets. There is no mention of them NOT being able to attack diagonally adjacent models, yet we have to assume their hand weapons are only capable of a standard orthogonal strike. That would mean they are entitled to make the diagonal ranged attack. I have always played disallowing the diagonal ranged attacks, but now archery is becoming a much bigger part of the game I have thought about trying a few games allowing it to see if I feel about it.
@ronkhoo8 ай бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring thanks for the long replies, I've only recently started replaying the reissue HQ and expansions and your reviews are one of the best resources. Diagonal adjacent does seem like one of the most discussed game rules :D some melee weapons can hit diagonally, some ranged weapons shouldn't (by player interpretation), between these 2 cases some characters can end up with a diagonal adjacent blind spot. That requires strategic positioning, which is good for gameplay I think. I'm playing solo using the app, once I encounter ranged enemies I'll know for sure how official rules interpret diagonal ranged attacks.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
Oh, to add, in Against the Ogre Horde, the rules for the arena combat make a specific distinction between "adjacent" and "immediately diagonal." So I do think arguing that the"true" ruling of ranged attacks is that they are not allowed to attack immediately diagonal spaces is pretty shaky. It just comes down to which you ultimately prefer for the flow of the game.

According to the US, and Hasbro, rules, if you have no weapon, you roll 1 die.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring8 ай бұрын
Yea, I know. That’s the point I’m making. The “base attack” for a US hero is technically one, not the value on their card, but Avalon Hill have adapted a rule from the European game where the attack value on a character sheet was a hero’s base value before weapons. You can’t open a door when only rolling one dice which is why the rules specifically state the wizard can’t do it. To clarify, the rules aren't asking you to roll your "unarmed attack" against the door, they are asking you to roll your "base attack value" from your character card. That made sense in the European rules, but doesn't make sense in the US rules.

So let's face the Ogre in the room...with only Wizards of Zargon left to glam up, what are we thinking, 13 quests? Because it feels very anticlimactic to just waltz into each ones lair like we Googled their last Check In. I feel like each wizard should get a 1 or 2 quest buildup leading to their fight. Let us traverse the swamps the necromancer is hiding in. Challenge the orc warlord to access the cave his shaman sequesters himself in. Scale the mountains to reach the storm master, etc. Then we would still want a preamble to "Oops, J/K they're all still alive, go play Wizard wack-a-mole" maybe we go to town to celebrate and a massive force of evil warriors attack the town and the heroes have to defend a few waves, with a final boss dropping off a challenge to come face the wizards for realsies. This would give them elbow room to create new content and expand it to a full sized expansion but let them continue to show love and respect for the classics, as the actual fights against the wizards wouldn't need to change.

So, while you aren't wrong, it's not a nit I would necessarily pick myself. It's more to do with how language has evolved and the usage changes over time.
