I'm so jelly, I havne't gotten my box yet. I've loving the direction they are taking with some of the furniture and models. and I'm falling in love with the mechanics that are included in this expansion. FINALLY!! we got spiders and that makes me happy, kind of wishing the spawnlings got there own little models. But I would be happy to use the tiles. Maybe avalon hill could make little quest packs that have 3d prints of the tiles for each expansion or the core game. I would gladly pay for something like that. I'm crossing my fingers that the next quest pack they release will be the wiards of morcar ... I mean Zargon haha. Maybe finally we can get the female wizard. and Finally I do have a question, I've been wanting to get me a set of the dread viel dice, but when I go to the website, I can not find a listing. Were they removed?

As far as I know the Dread Veil dice are sold out at the moment. They may come back - and hopefully they will - but considering they didn't even make them available in most territories, I'm not really expecting it.

Cool expansion. You sort of hit on this about the limitations of the board but I would really like to see a "big" big-box expansion, EG one the size of the base game that contained a new board or boards, similar to what Altar Quest did years ago. Even rules for a random dungeon generator using the app. could be a cool new direction to take the game.

I've said before that I think Avalon Hill probably think of the HeroQuest board the same way Hasbro thinks about the corners of a Monopoly board. It's a recognisable part of the brand and always has to be in effect. We will see what the future holds, though!

A random dungeon generator would be VERY interesting. I think Advanced Hero Quest had dungeon tiles you arranged as you progressed through quests. It would be a sort of callback to that product line. I know I wouldn't mind it if they had a spinoff product for random dungeon generation! It should be a separate thing from the main game though, like Arena Mode.

There are a lot of different Fan made maps you can either buy as a mat or print yourself. I also made a lot of Cards for skills, Treasure and new characters myself. Players don't even recognise that it is selfmade.

Played it last night with friends and we got flanked by raptors and skull blights in the halls which freaked us out cause we’ve never encountered monsters in the halls before. But cause I was playing Explorer it did infinite wonders being able to detect and disarm traps so the whole crew could at least get through and fight unbothered by traps.

I definitely feel there is a lot to be optimistic about. I think that, in general, HeroQuest could be "tidier" and by now I would have thought Avalon Hill could have started pulling on some threads to tighten everything up, but it does seem to be moving that way and I am always excited to see what's next. From this set, the easy answer for favourite miniatures would be the three big ones. They are all really well done with good detail and a lot of character. But... those raptors are so good. I think it would have to be raptors third, serpent second, and then ape at the top of the tree.

I really hope they keep giving you these review copies! I love the way you present information, and your Initial Review videos are an excellent starting point into every product. Love the new variant rules they put in this expansion. Difficulties are a fun concept, and I agree that Heroic Difficulty sounds very fun and dramatic! The minis look incredible in this box. I am especially happy to see a Giant Spider. This is a great glimpse into the future of the game! I think we are in good hands. All I need is the Wizards of Morcar and some reprints of the Hero Collections and I'm a happy quester.

I'm hoping in the future they can release a separate product that's JUST new game boards, nothing else. Expansions like this could really benefit from a fully Jungle themed board. I wouldn't mind spending a little bit on a newly themed board, but I'm unsure how popular a product like that would be.

But I think we need a replacement for the doors as well - leafy arches choked with creepers that you thematically hack your way through to open. This is the first time where I felt HeroQuest's ambition exceeded the versatility of the board.

Thank you for the commentary, and as always, right on target. So I watched yours first and then unboxed mine right now. The only concern I have on this is how flexy the minis are and the ratio versus what we got. Example: take any one of the quests and count the enemies and then notice what the wandering monster is. Skullblights example 2 wanding monsters, but 4-6 on the quest and 3 only in box... very strange to me as if the minis were made first and placed in a box and then quest map made, and no one counted what the amount of minis were actually needed. Hmmm I'll need to get on the etsy page of minis 3D and start ordering proxies.. . Thanks again for diving into this for us and your take. I'm still very happy that this was created for us to continue on with the storyline.. just hope that Wizard of Morcar/Zargon is being developed for us. QUEST ON ⚔️ 🛡 ⚔️ 🛡

That's not really any different to other expansions. Like Frozen Horror, for example, where you get two yeti wandering monsters and loads on the map as well. Generally, wandering monsters aren't going to pop while you are fighting anyway, and the rule seems to be that as long as a map doesn't use more monsters in any one room than you have in the box then it's okay. We tend to find that heroes clear the dungeon as they go anyway.

I do support shops on etsy by buying proxies, but I would still love to have the trademark style monsters from AH/Hasbro. Very nice overview. Looking forward to picking up my copy soon. I absolutely agree with you about the keyword criticism. Tightening that up leads to a more clear and consistent game, which is better for everyone. A new base set would be very cool, with a new map and terrain and everything, but I wondered if they didn't want to do that due to First Light coming out soon. Two new base sets (one lighter and one heavier) might have muddied the shelves as it were in the commercial space. If I might, I do disagree with the "traverse" thing. Seems like a tad nit picky, and traverse is a word that means "to travel or move through" so it seems like it fits perfectly. Lastly, as a fan of the game here in the States, I'm hoping we get both of the remaining European expansions edition. The Wizards of Morcar like you mentioned, but also the Advanced quest edition of the game with "The Dark Company" quest would be appreciated. I loved the idea of using the board in sections to represent a sprawling, interconnected mega-ruin like Dark Company does. Great work mate, cheers!

Traverse is just one example of going off script with the terminology. For example, there is a card that says "when you wield this item." We don't know within the game what "wield" means. That card should clearly say "as an attack, you can use this item to..." Then we have the inconsistently applied term "creatures." Rules should always use consistent terminology. Traverse is a minor example of that, but again, what exactly does it mean in game terms? If to traverse means to "travel through" what does it mean if I move into the space and stop? If I move off it in my next turn, what then? Do I apply the 2 movement point penalty when I enter the space, or when I leave it? (These are rhetorical questions.) If we want HeroQuest to be tightened up and more consistent, that extends to consistent terminology throughout the rules. Some people will see it as nit-picking, but if we already have clearly defined or understood words for actions, we shouldn't suddenly throw in something completely different to mean the same thing. There is no need for it, and it can lead to confusion (as it already has from discussions I have seen in forums).

I will continue to push for Avalon Hill to release some kind of physical Quest Maker set with a double-sided board featuring a new dungeon layout on one side and an exterior forest layout on the others, new outdoor furniture (a sacrificial altar and stone ruins would be amazing), and the gender variants of the heroes as included in the HasLab campaign. Even with an absence of new tiles or even monsters, I would absolutely buy that as a product, just because it would enhance homebrews so much. I think the more that AH recognises that new and exclusive content that can be utilised for creating our own quests is just as valuable as expansions themselves.

There's certainly loads they could do. An overlay pack with different types of room designs, monster packs with variant enemy types, boss packs with special enemies to represent various named villains, terrain packs. Maybe they feel there isn't a strong enough market for that sort of thing.

I can see why they didn't do them as models. 12 extra bits of plastic is quite a lot, and for most of the time the tokens are going to be off the board and sitting on a character card like a status effect. That said, plastic minis would have been cool.

I think they will have to. With only five quests, I don't think Morcar will hold up against expansions like this (other than being a classic that everyone wants, of course). More quests, and an overhaul of the wizard's spells to make them viable options would be a good start.

The men-at-arms were the same miniatures from Frozen Horror and Dark Company, which the modern mercs were based on, so yes, I would assume they will just reissue them. The evil wizards were a highlight - especially the orc shaman - I think Avalon Hill could have fun with them.

Couple of things. First, if you are writing rules, you should keep your terminology consistent. But mainly, it's fuzzy. What is traversing? Entering a space? Leaving a space? Moving between two spaces? If the intent is it costs two movement points to move into a space containing hindering terrain, then that needs to be expressed clearly. There is another example of this on one of the cards where the text says, "when you wield this item..." What is wielding? Is it when the item is equipped? It is when you are carrying it? Does wielding require an action? If you wield something, can you also make an attack with your weapon? The intent may seem clear in both cases, but people are already asking for official clarifications on these things because the terminology is unexpected.

The official answer on the item you "wield" was that it costs your action, and I do think that is the conclusion most people would have drawn. These certainly aren't major issues, but there are quite a few instances of fluffier language, where it seems the text was written by someone who isn't primarily a technical writer. And that's not the worst thing ever - especially with a game like HeroQuest - but I think it's possible to be a bit more consistent and tighter with terminology without making the rules too stuffy. The introduction of more keywords is a good move, but they haven't fully embraced that concept yet.

As I understand it, the Avalon Hill team is pretty small and has limited bandwidth, and if they do something like a book then it takes them off projects like new expansions. It's a constant balancing act to figure out what people want the most and what is going to generate the most sales, and I suspect they are always going to fall on the side of new expansions.

I understand their hesitance to make a second board, since it would invite future expansions to expand on the second board, and then you would need this and the base game to play the new product, which would limit its appeal. Not that I can imagine there are people out there not buying everything. I don't understand people like that. But I hear they exist. Anyway, I think a half board could have worked in this situation, just the size of the box folded once. It's not much bigger than a set of overlays and would be too narrow focused to invite expansion. Alternatively, they could start selling either over-lays or completely independent boards that are just thematically different, with all the same rooms. They aren't needed, but a frozen board and a jungle board would probably sell well to people like me.

Meh,I don't see in malice in a little criticism. But I can't help but think a new board/doors might put the whole thing over the edge price wise. Out of this set,I like the skullblights the most. The spider's a bit over the top and the serpent looks a bit silly. Still,I'm gonna wait for the quest deep dive to make a final judgement. Cause in the end,it's all about the quests. Any news on First Light? I'm curious what they're going to do with that

id love your opinion on this. i was a kid when the original was out and have the set, except the american sets. I feel the series (heroquest games) are good, very good, BUT ! I feel theres to much coming out to soon. I think it will be hard to collect the whole set. And theres the mythic tier release that first came out. Most people will never be able to get it unless you pay alot of ebay. So you can never get the whole lot, not that it matters because you could collect a few sets only. But i feel they are bringing out to much to soon and the cost is high. Who has the money these days to pay for all this. Also I do love your reviews. And your painting of the old figures is great. What do you think ?

Mythic tier is much less of an issue because they have repackaged most of the contents for retail now. At the moment, the only stuff from Mythic you can't get at retail are the original four alt-gender hero sculpts (different barbarian and elf variants are available though), the exclusive Mentor, Witch King, and Sir Ragnar sculpts, the original version of the druid (a much better alternative was released at retail), and the Crypt of Perpetual Darkness quest which came with a dragon (which may yet get a release). So, only real completionists are going to be chasing down a Mythic pledge at this point. There is a lot of HeroQuest content coming out, but eventually the bubble will burst. I would rather they strike while the iron is hot and people are interested, so that we all get lots of content we can enjoy for the rest of our lives, rather than dropping one expansion per year until the game goes off the boil and they decide to can the whole game line. Also, if you add up the retail cost of every HeroQuest product so far, it's still around what some people drop on a single Kickstarter project. I consider HeroQuest products to be very reasonably priced in the grand scheme of hobby gaming, and even just recently on Amazon Prime day it was possible to get the core set for less than £50.

Avalon Hill have officially stated they have no plans to remake Space Crusade, and as Space Crusade was never released in the US I suspect they would be concerned there isn't strong enough demand in a major market. Even if they did eventually do it, they would have to strip out all the 40K lore, which I think many people consider to be an important element of the game. To be honest, considering how some people have been very reluctant to accept things like the jungle animals, dinosaurs, and Wandering Monk hero as being true to HeroQuest, I'm not sure how on board the fans would be blending in sci-fi materials. I am sure it would be a fun homebrew campaign idea for the right group, but I rate Space Crusade as my second favourite game of all time, and I still don't want to see my barbarian plodding around in a Space Hulk. Maybe some other viewers will share their thoughts here for you.

It would help to sell the jungle theme. Some maps are inside, though. And some seem to represent overgrown ruins, so you are getting inside and outside spaces. I think a few more overlays representing the outside locations, and maybe some leafy arches to use in place of doorways for outside areas would have gone a long way, because sometimes it's not quite clear whether you are supposed to be outside, or in a part of an ancient civilisation with stone structures. Next week on the channel I will be posting my spoiler-filled deep dive into the quest book and I will show all the maps.

Search for the quest list on Elvyler's website. It's the closest thing we have to an official order and I think all of it except maybe the current position of Delthrak has been seen and approved by Avalon Hill.
