Always Board Never Boring realised there were a lot of flagstone bases in his future as he progresses through painting all of his miniatures for Advanced Heroquest, so he thought it would be a good idea to do a separate video going through his process for painting flagstones in a bit more detail.
This simple painting guide is a variant of the one ABNB did for his HeroQuest Restoration Project, and you can find that original painting guide by following this link:

Just wanted to say a quick thanks for the base colour scheme ideas for AHQ. I've been finishing off bases using Zamesi desert and seraphim sepia wash on top of sculpted polyfilla on 20mm small bases, greenstuff larger. Works well

Thanks. I felt Advanced Heroquest deserved more than a bit of gravel and a drybrush, but not so much that I would lose my mind painting all those bases. This is a happy medium.

I’m liking your videogame references in your AHQ videos. Zero Wing’s amazing translation for the title of this one, and the Resident Evil door openings on the playthroughs 🤣 Long may it continue! These bases look really good. When I come to paint all my miniatures, I’m torn between spending the time doing something like this, or copping out and just basing them all with sand and just colour it grey or grey/brown instead of the classic goblin green. We’ll see how I feel once I’ve painted a few miniatures 🤣
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

Normally if I do a reference it's from a movie, but I like to drop a few video game references every now and again as well. All my D&D minis are just Astrogranite texture paint and a wash. The neutral colour means they don't look dramatically out of place no matter where I use them, but for these guys I wanted to go (a bit of) the extra mile.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I’ll take a look at those technical paints, I didn’t know they were a thing, thanks! I also need to decide how to base the minis for Space Hulk and Space Crusade. I’m hoping it’s easy to get hold of some plastic netting or mesh that, once painted silver, would look like the metal grating for those boards, and leave it at that. I don’t like overly fussy bases as they detract from the miniature (maybe that would be a good thing when I see the results of my first painted miniature after nearly 30 years 🤣). While I’m fully stuck in the 80s/90s when it comes to miniatures and painting styles, I’m not sure I can go 100% old school and have goblin green bases for Space Hulk!

@@jonathan2950 crossing minis from Space Crusade to Advance Space Crusade is tricky because the settings are so different. Whatever you do with the bases will look “off” somewhere.

Yep, right from the HQ bases where you showed this idea/technique for those I've really liked the way it looks and totally fits the theme of both HQ and AHQ dungeon floors. It's definitely the way forward to have the miniatures in keeping with their environment. Very cool. Quick stupid question though (and I'm sure you have mentioned it previously) but do you just blu-tac your miniatures to those old paint pots when painting them?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

Yes, just a wad of blu-tac under the base. I do have a paint handle, but I've never got on with it. I'm a bit old school, really.

Have you listed all the stuff your still missing from the full collection mate? Ive had a clearout, found a lot of old Citadel minis. Found that Minotaur Lord amongst others, brilliant sculpt. No joy on the blog, hasnt been updated in ages it seems. Let us all know and we can help get it finished.

I'm afraid my blog is now really just for archive purposes. Investing more and more time into the channel, something had to give, and it was the blog. Collecting Advanced Heroquest is a very (very) long term project. I only pick up pieces here and there when the prices are decent and I have some hobby change jangling in my pocket, so the list of things I don't have is still far great than the list of things I do have. I've picked up a couple of miniatures since my last update, though. Once I've sourced a few more I will do another roundup. I should also start painting my way through what I have this year.

That's incredibly kind of you. I'm currently starting on a big push with painting Advanced Heroquest (hence this video on the bases). I have a lot to get through, but the plan is to flit between this and Masters of the Universe to get it all done. If you would like to email me, you can use the email under the "about" section on my channel page, or just PM me through my Facebook, and we can discuss in more detail.

This will seem like a really basic question... I've never watered down my paints and having returned to painting after 10 years thinking I may need to start pushing the quality a bit more. What's the best way of doing it? I've seen these wet palettes but I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet 😅
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Wet palettes stop paint drying out on the palette while you are using it. It's a good idea to thin your paints in most cases to get a smooth finish (it usually means you need a couple of coats). I just add a little water to the paint when it's on my palette paper. If you are going to thin the paint down a lot, to make a really thin glaze for blending, too much water can make the paint split and it become difficult to work with. In those cases it's often beneficial to use a medium (Lahmian Medium from Citadel) which thins the paint to make it a glaze without changing how it flows on the miniature. This will allow you to use a really thin paint like a normal paint. I guess that's a slightly more advanced method. In most cases, just adding a little water is enough.

Pull the trigger on this mate. Best thing ive used. Get a cheap one ($10 or so), and grab some parchment paper, the non grease-proof stuff, I use reynolds, its $7 on amazon. Dont use the included stuff its for heavy acrylics, too much moisture for mini painting. This setup will last you months.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

@Dekka G Just to add (in case it wasn't clear), I don't personally use wet palettes. What you see in my videos is me using palette paper, which I pick up cheap from The Works in the UK. I tape a sheet to my workstation and mix directly on that. But some people swear by wet palettes, so if you can find a cheap one to try you might find it works for you.

I like the color scheme. Too many highlights actually detracts from them matching the tiles. The tiles are just not that detailed in general. I based all mine as sandy earth for WFB use though. On squares.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Going too extreme with the highlights would probably make everything look a bit too mid-90s 'Eavy Metal. I did seriously consider switching to square bases - there are lots of good reasons why you should - but in the end I just couldn't do it.

I always think of 4th edition orcs and goblins, with the super bright paint schemes. I will never understand how the good KZbinrs have so much patience for the number of highlights. I find it hard enough to get enough things painted as it is!

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring They don't paint to game, they paint to paint. That's their hobby, and business often. I tend find them overly garish and they look like a color splashed mess grouped together, though the GW huge battle shots currently looked just as jumbled. Especially this new ttend of colorful shiny metals everyone is doing. They look like Space Marines that people painted with Testors auto model body sprays with metal flakes in the 90s only with far more steps involved. I rember a dude in the late 90s that had Space Wolves done in a baby blue '57 Chevy sort of metallic color. I actually think I might have his Wold Guard dudes around still in a box somewhere. That will be a treat to strip. I finally got a copy of Doomsday Countdown in hand yesterday. It was $30.00 on sale and I threw it in primarily because I was ordering some Battletech mech packs at Barnes & Noble. The Chaos cultists are from 2019 which is rather surprising. I seem to have forgotten that they updated them from the old ones. Was Conquest the old ones or the 2019 ones? I also got an Imperium shipment the same day. The Sisters are not that bad in person, provided you use all helmeted heads on them and not the dumb white wig look. Third binder already!!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Oh, I appreciate they are painting for a very different reason (and on a very different level) than I do, but I would just get bored constantly going over the same bit of a miniature. Just one of the joys of the hobby, I suppose - different people get different things out of it. The Doomsday Countdown cultists are from Blackstone Fortress Escalation (and Agents of the Abyss, or whatever they called the mini pack they put out for a while). I believe Doomsday included a full set except for the Firebrand character with the big flamethrower thing. They are some really nice miniatures; almost a Necromunda gang as well. Conquest shipped with the naff old cultists that were also bundled into Assassinorum Execution Force. God know when they were made, but it was a long time ago. I'm not into the Sia look for the Sisters at all - but then, you know how I feel about helmets on my little soldiers! I always quite liked the foot sloggers for the Sisters. It was all the silly machines that put me off.
