Always Board Never Boring is back to complete the third and final solo mission from HeroQuest: The Frozen Horror. In this adventure - The Rescue - Ethel the barbarian must enter a dangerous dungeon in search of the tribal elder, Gothar. Will she find him before it's too late? Well... there's no time limit for this mission. So probably. Yeah.
Please be aware, by the time ABNB was finishing up this playthrough he was very tired and started to make a few stupid mistakes and bad choices. The biggest error is that he read Gothar's movement as 1D6 instead of a fixed movement of six squares. This doesn't really have any impact on the playthrough, but someone is bound to notice and query it in the comments so ABNB thought he would be proactive about addressing it.

You did very well to get out of there alive with the old guy. It took me 4 attempts to win this quest because I was too ambitious. You managed to avoid the Ice Gremlins, Yetis etc. Thanks for the cool video.

I kept waiting for a war bear to turn up and beat me down, but it didn't happen! It's a really odd map layout, because I just adopted the strategy of opening each new door that I saw, and that led me straight to the objective. Often you would be expected to go a bit further out of your way to find the route through.

I’ve just watched all three play through in succession , really enjoyed them . I played hero quest with my own children in the 80s (I’m 70 now) I’m definitely going to purchase this , and the new base game of course . Great 😊Thank you

Great play through. Having got the base game for my son for Christmas and playing through a few adventures, I really like your 3 point search rule. Playing the individual searches with him I could see his interest waning at points, especially as the danger is so low in the initial adventures. Thanks for sharing
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

Thanks for watching. Combining the searches does keep things punchy. However, with a group game I do still keep the treasure search separate, so you can either search for traps and secret doors or treasure. This allows the heroes to pick the best person to search for treasure, bearing in mind that's the hero who will face any trap cards or wandering monsters.

you've reminded me that the Companion App suggests another use for the "mystery tile" (zargon symbol) to mark a SUSPECTED trap square (of course there's only one and you may find a half dozen traps in one room!). back in the day we often used markers ourselves like skull tiles, spare dice, etc. of course if the heroes forget, that's not Zargon's problem... !

As Zargon, I always make the heroes remember trap locations. They have been known to forget where I've pointed to before.

Thank you so much. It makes sense to stop with The Frozen Horror at this point. We've seen the new enemies in action, we've seen some of the story, but there are still plenty of secrets left for everyone to find for themselves as they continue the adventure. It's always the biggest issue with HeroQuest - every playthrough is full of spoilers!

I like to imagine that a "3 point room scan" means search for Traps, Secret Door, then Treasure
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Yeah. That's how I do it for these solo games. You do traps, then doors, and then as long as it's safe, treasure. Obviously, if you find a trap on a treasure chest or something like that, you don't do the treasure search until it's safe. In regular group games, the search is either traps then doors, or treasure. This splits it up so more heroes have stuff to do, and also lets the players have more choice over who risks finding the wandering monsters!

HeroQuest names are often so on the nose they are like a parody of high fantasy stories. It's part of the charm, I think.

It's a very tough expansion. I wouldn't have made it through part 2 if it hadn't been for some lucky finds when searching for treasure.
@SgtRenny
@SgtRenny Жыл бұрын
If you plan on doing all of the expansion you should start with the extra online quest (Into the Northlands) that hasbro released just before the frozen horror came out. It gives you some extra loot and makes you find the Armband of Ice, which is a treasure card that's included in the box but it's missing from the quest book. It's also a very fun quest, they also added it to the companion app if you don't want to download the pdf.

Ethel had run-ins with a war bear previously, and it was a bad time. I was lucky this time out that I didn't bump into any of the tough Frozen Horror enemies. Orcs and abominations aren't in the least bit frightening after being chased around by a yeti and a polar bear!
@HeroQuestFans
@HeroQuestFans Жыл бұрын
the app lets you choose to implement the Yeti Hug escape manuver, so even if you don't use the "into the northland" playtest options to make it more manageable, that's a big help! these are hard quests. the group quests are even longer...

In my games hero’s can Move Search Action Free action open doors, drink potions And throw one dagger axe or spear (otherwise they never use them) This means less down time waiting between turn standing around waiting for their next turn Also I make hero’s choose their equipment before going into the dungeon so it’s battle axe or broad sword or long sword or spirit blade or short sword No swapping and can choose off hand shield crossbow orcs bane (battle axe requires both hands so no off hand with that) This makes their stats static and easier to track speeding up the game But your way was interesting
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
I assume you let them swap weapons when they find new ones in the dungeon? I like letting heroes take a few weapons into the dungeon. Normally they still just end up with a single weapon and a few extras, but letting them swap loadouts gives them some more things to think about on their turn.
@carpetsnake83

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yeah I liked the way you did it I think great for more experience players who make decisions quickly and its good way of doing it in a solo hero quest with one hero for sure It’s funny how people have different takes on the same rules There’s no wrong way to play it only the right way which is what ever way leaves you and your group satisfied at the end Of course they can swap out with what they find and in between quests So they can own the battle axe and broad sword but they can only choose one to bring with them I usually play with people who aren’t big gamers so taking away the umming and ahring is a priority and keeping tempo up (quick games a good game)

I've actually got a video coming up on the channel soon talking around this point a bit, and one of the cool things about HeroQuest is it feels quite personal because no two people play by the same rules. It's ripe for tweaking to your own ends, and indeed, sometimes rules are so vague it's almost like it wants you to just do what's best for you. So, how would you handle the situation in this mission where Ethel had her broadsword and shield, but then found a battleaxe. Would you let her take the battleaxe but not use it until the next quest? Let her swap out but then she is stuck with that swap for the rest of the playthrough.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
By the way, I've posted a video today about rules interpretations and handling things that might not be really clear in the rules. You might want to copy paste your first comment there as you had some cool ideas that I am sure other players would like to see.

Yes, Gothar is the tribal elder who is said to be very wise, so they are planning to ask him some friendly questions while he's have a nice lie down on the rack. The quest specifically states that when you are escaping with Gothar the enemies leave him alone as they want him alive.

Regarding your timer mechanic: Do you draw 1 skull token after EACH Heroe's turn or only 1 after all Heroes have taken their turn as a party collectively?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 6 ай бұрын
It's on Zargon's turn, so if all four heroes activate and they haven't made any meaningful progress (and therefore Zargon is pretty much kicking his heels for a turn) he gets a token.
