It seems like Americans or American Building Code even in a Northern climate seems to completely ignore vapor barrier while up here in Canada we are obsessed with forming a perfect seal in the house to the point that you end up going around and caulking around boxes with a plastic sealant and using acoustical sealant at the tops and bottoms of walls and at the edges of windows and everywhere and end up wearing that stuff on your hands for a couple of months after you're done

My husband was a "Drywall Mechanic" for 30 yrs and I was his dead man and helper for quite a few of those years. You should use a full sheet on the bottom and a full sheet on top and put the ripper in the middle, it will be so much easier to finish. It will be very difficult to pull smooth lines when finishing so close to the floor. I love your house and envy passion and determination. Keep up the good work.

Heath -- Just a pointer. On sheet rock (Drywall): make sure that one 8 foot sheet doesn't match the other sheet. On the ceiling you have two 8' sheets starting in the same area and they should staggered. This will assure that the ceiling is stronger with the joists and also avoid any cracks that may form. There is absolutely no doubt that you will have to remove the drywall you just installed, add vapour barrier, and install new drywall. The pot lights will require vapour barrier as well typically using pre-formed flanged plastic covers that go up over the top of the pot. Ditto for smoke detectors, electrical outlets, electric fans, electric switches, and any other penetration. Warm, moist indoor air will find its way into a cold attic space. The resulting condensation will soak the insulation, and spawn the growth of mold. Vapour sealing is one of the most critical items to address. You are not ready to drywall just yet.

amen to that. In Canada, inspectors will not even pass preliminary electrical inspection if any wiring device on exterior walls if vapour boxes are not installed around the devices. vapour barrier, 6 mil minimum, must also extend behind any wall that intersects with an exterior wall so that the barrier is continuous. could write pages on this subject.

Great stories that accompany your video’s makes them special in every way. So, I’m a retired HVAC service tech but helped with install work when service was slow. One thing that Minnesota building code required was insulated 4” flex for all the exhaust fans R4 insulation that was even stepped up to R8 with newer codes I believe. I bring this up as I saw what looked like uninsulated 4” flex on the one exhaust fan. The reason for having it insulated was to prevent moisture from condensing in the flex in unheated spaces, This condensation was still a problem so we were always told to make sure the flex had a slight trap layout near the connection to the exhaust fan to keep this moisture from dripping out exhaust fans that in some instances caused water stains in the drywall around the exhaust fan. Your codes there could very well be different and insulated may not be required but in that case I would insure a slight trap layout in the flex near the fan to prevent any possible water staining or dripping problem that might occur in the winter months. In my mind you are doing an incredible job.

I underestand exactly how you feel about finishing it yourself. I quilt, and many quilters make the top of the quilt then send it out to have it "quilted" by a person who uses a long arm quilting machine. I just can't do this. My quilts are personal. It takes so much longer for me to do it myself but the other person won't have the same passion that I have for my quilt, the same pride and love. I put a little label on the back of my quilt or insert a card when I give my granddaughter a dress I have made, it says "each stitch sewn with love". That's how you built your house, with passion and with love, each nail, each screw, it was all out of love and passion for the craft of building and the love of your family. Do it yourself and finish it, it won't take that much longer and you will never be satisified if you hire it out. You need to finish it yourself.

No vapor barrier? Just curious. Maybe it’s not needed where you are. I’m in NW WI and didn’t use it in my first heated garage/shop. Once I tore it down to build a bigger shop, I found that all the insulation had been wet on and off over the years and the sheathing had lots of mold on the inside between the studs. I used the heaviest vapor barrier plastic I could find on the new shop - after the insulation was done and before the interior wall sheathing went up. I even sealed all the electrical boxes with those special plastic “pouches” and lots of tucktape. Good luck!

Sometimes some people are too stubborn to know what is best for them. In the small amount of drywall you have shown I see a number of no-no's. Mark my word, you will be frustrated with cracks forming at joints over the next couple of years (not due to settling), dry wall, tape and mud is one of the biggest bangs for the buck you can get in home construction, especially when you have little to no experience. The people who do this for a living doing it at greatneck speed and they know what they are doing, the mudding is an art in itself. Heed the advise don't be an idiot or you will regret having to deal with the cracks down the road.

Everything looks great. They are right about staggering the joints, which would be taught to all of us if we signed up with the Drywall Union. But honestly, it's not a code requirement. Gypsum board can be hung horizontally or vertically on walls, but must be hung perpendicular to ceiling joists. A quick note: don't forget Attic Access. The minimum opening requirement is 22" x 30", which is a code requirement, and the spot you choose must have a minimum vertical height of 30 inches from the top of the ceiling framing members to the underside of the roof framing members, for a minimum area of 30 square feet (R807.1). Plus there must be a light in the attic that can be reached when you enter the Attic Access, you know, like a Pull Switch. p.s. Well, it's not so quick of a note: According to the International Residential Code(R702.7), Class I or Class II Vapor Retarders are required on the Interior Side of Framed Walls in Climate Zones 5, 6, 7, 8 and Marine 4. You are in zone 6 Category B (dry). But some would argue you don't need the vapor barrier....whatever the inspector says...

Having lived in Alaska for 45 yrs, (being a construction laborer born and raised in ID), I’ve seen many construction techniques and the only concern I would have against completely enclosing the water lines is if it was ever to freeze, it would take summer or heating for a week to thaw out. It may be too late but I would put a refrigerator water supply tap and put the outlet into the septic drain, (at the end of the service farthest from the inlet), so that you can have moving water all winter. As long as the water is moving it won’t freeze. So if you’re going to be gone for whatever reason you can leave the water running and not need to heat the structure. Good luck and God bless.

I did everything except tape, texture and paint on my build. Tried to tape the joints but could not get a smoothe coat on without lots of tiny voids in the mud. Gave up and hired a pro to finish for me. He said i needed to add some water to my mud as it was to dry. I was using pre-mixed mud as I was not a pro. He said you still need to add a little water to the pre mixed mud most times. You are knocking out the drywall so you will be fine. You do need to stagger your joints though, especially if you are striving for perfection.

Just a small tip on your drywall install. On the wall sheets put the top sheet up 1st, then the on the floor the 2nd sheet. the piece between the two (if there is one) should go into the middle. I know its a place you'll see more if the taping isn't 99.9% BUT that said with the piece in the middle it soo much easier when taping since your not stretching for the ceiling level or stooping to the floor. you'll be standing working at waist height easily completing the taping. Keep up the GREAT JOB! Best wishes also.

Sounds like you got it, good deal. Least amount of seams and no scabbiing (try an keep seams waist high as posible). Just 3 thin coats on screw holes and the seams you should be good. Just 1 thing is i'd use a vapor barrier in the colder climate, some plastic wrap or something.

That many people living in that house, during wintertime especially, the idea of using a vapor barrier is worth kicking around..

They say that drywall finishing is an art form. I have faith that YOU CAN do this. Even if you get "help". Don't second guess yourself. You've accomplished so much. Eagerly awaiting your next video.

Another issue I just noticed thanks to zeke112964 is he never install a vapor barrier on the exterior walls or ceiling. This is big no no , unless he is planning painting the ceiling with 3 coats of oil paint the he can get away with this. Cliff you need vapor barrier on the out side walls and ceiling or you will rot out the wood in no time. Also a vapor barrier approved over the pot lighting. The vapor barrier should have been installed between the top plates as well so it could be a continuous seal all over the ceiling.

Much better man than me with that sheetrocking. Did it when I was 23 / 24 remodeling an old house my first Wife and I purchased. We lived in it at the time. What a mess.

May I just say how proud I am at what you have accomplished! When your done, you will have touched every square inch of your home. Way to go! I am inspired to do the same. I want to purchase land outside of Sedona and build or rehab one day. Your family is blessed to call that property home. 👍🏻. By the way, I decided that if you ever want a change in career, that you could do audio book narration. You have a great story teller voice and should capitalize on it??!! I watch another KZbin channel, Bealtaine Cottage. Colette O’Neil is from East Ireland, and lives on three acres. She has worked every inch of her land since she purchased it around 15 years ago. Colette teaches permaculture and talks about how one should walk the land to develop a relationship with it. She has a lovely voice which is so melodic and soothing. You have that quality. 😉

Hi, the drywall looks really good, I've seen what some pro's do and yours is way better, after all the work you have done you can't sub the last few big bits and I know that you have kitchen and bathroom, laundry room and all the other stuff to go but after drywall and tape , skim coat then paint the bedrooms will be basically done. Good luck

One other small point, don't forget you must have an access to the upper roof area for later maintenance, A good place to locate one would be inside a closet so that it does not affect the ceiling lines. MAKE SURE ITS BIG ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO CLIMB THROUGH. ABOUT 2 X 2 FEET PIECE OF PLYWOOD COVER WITH A SIMPLE PUSH-UP, IS GOOD.

In my parents first house my father installed a set of pull down foldable attic stairs in a very short hall going in to the bathroom on the left side of the main hall way so it didn't affect the ceiling lines in the main hallway . When the house was built the attic access was put in the ceiling of the smallest bedroom closet in the house. It wasn't even 2 ' X 2 ' . It had a push up panel made out of wall board . It made getting up in the attic so much easier after the pull down attic stairs were installed . The one in the bedroom closet was way to small & to get up in to the attic everything in the closet had to be taken out in order to get up in the attic .

Personally I’d hire the taping out. You have done a killer job so far. Taping is a job I’m not confident in and to prevent cracks I’d let a guy who does it everyday come in and finish it right. It’s a skilled trade, one I’m not confident in doing. But do your thang. Your doing an epic job. No respect lost if you hire out anything.
