Everyone has different requirements for their wedding. Some people don't care if you show skin or if you wear black. No one has to follow "rules" lol.

A floorlength dress is considered as rude as wearing white to a wedding. It doesn’t matter how formal the wedding is, unless the bride specifies “long dresses please” which is a pretty rude request. The bride should be the only one in a long dress and the only one in a white dress. So no long dresses to weddings ladies.

I disagree! My wedding was black tie and I expected floor length wedding dresses.

Well, prior to your wedding it’s always been considered a very rude thing for a guest to do. No one should look as special or was well dressed as the bride. I guess all formerly known rules of good manners are out the window. Party on.

Black and white tie both require floor-length gowns. For a black tie event, you _can_ get away with a _very_ dressed up cocktail dress, if your hosts are relaxed enough about the dress code. For a white tie function, a floor-length gown is a MUST. Since the aristocracy has become less of a thing, people's interpretation of the traditional dress codes has become much more casual. A century ago, "casual" meant you were wearing a blazer! But some people do still abide by the established codes. So if your invitation says "black tie", feel free to check with your hosts exactly which of the traditional elements they expect - it's much better than putting lots of money and effort into the wrong outfit!
