Hate for subies is so undeserved. I’ve had one in the past and everyone I talked to was like “just wait till that head gasket blows”. Never once had any issues and I thrashed that thing up to 300,000 kms redlining my shifts half the time. The main issue with WRX is that most people who had them were teenagers who drove exactly like me when I was a teenager, and then do stupid mods. Unmodified/modified properly and treated with at least a good bit of maintenance and care and they run forever, plus such a treat to drive.

After having a MK7 R many years ago and now a Facelift 8V.2 Audi S3 sedan, the EA888 AWD combo is great. My MK7 R did do the water pump but it was an early 2014/5 model otherwise I had no issues. I did recently consider the MK7.5 R wagon and think this is one of the best daily sporty AWD turbo wagons on the market. I did consider many other cars but the Golf R drive train in a facelift Audi S3 sedan just made the most sense.

On the coupé-SUV things, don't forget the Mercedes GLE and GLC coupés. Over here in Kenya, there're several in used car dealers' yards and are being bought. As an Aussie, there is nothing more satisfying watching 2 guys in the know, put shit on everyone and everything from overseas. I've mainly been a Ford man, but have owned several Subaru's, and I just love them. I had a liberty B spec wagon with the 2.5 turbo. Nothing ever went wrong with it, and it went like shit off a shovel. I currently own a piece of shit, jacked up with big tyres, SH Forester, and it is such a great offroader that I don't care about cosmetically. Toss up between my 3 favourites being FG Falcon with barra 6 and 6 speed auto, XY 4WD Falcon ute, and XB GT351 manual, all super reliable and awesome in their own right. It seems the advice is to buy an old classic that you enjoy, and watch it appreciate in value. Modern cars are shit, with the exception of a Mazda MX 5 or a BRZ. probably the only 2 I'd buy now. Thanks, guys. Great video. Had a shit load of fun watching it.

Great yarn mate and totally agree that pretty much all "modern" cars are shit (only thing I'd trust would last now is a small-engined Toyota). I'm an Alfa guy but also have a soft spot for Subies and recently bought a 22yo Outback as a daily commuter so I could give my GTA a break. Almost embarrassed to say it only cost me $1800 - for a 5sp manual with 4 months rego, perfect interior, 2" lift kit, bull bar, CB, and HD offroad tyres. Yeah it had +250,000km on it but ... everything (I mean everything) works, plus the PO replaced the timing belt and head gaskets (with MLS) and fitted a HD Exedy clutch about 25,000km before I bought it. Body is straight, even the clear coat is intact, and the last owner changed the oil every 5,000km. I'm able to service it myself - only real job still to do is replace the CV boots (I'll just replace both CV drive shafts myself over Xmas). I absolutely love it - to the point I now hardly ever want to drive the GTA ... (until I get in it and remember why I love that...). The missus is also on to her third Forester.

As a C6 owner for the past 11+ years with 130Kmiles on it, there are 3 worth while recommendations I can make if one buys one with 100Kmi and over. 1) Wire in a Painless FP fuse/relay 30A relocation harness to loop out the under engineered 10A OE FP circuit. This due to eventual carbonization inside the fuse/relay block. 2) Switch over to non EMT Michelin PSS or 4S tires. 3) Get Koni sport shocks. The tires and shocks will utterly transform the car. And swap out all the HT ignition stuff and belts. I will say mine drives fantastically. No rattles, squeaks, moans, groans, etc. Just the normal noises of a car with stiff suspension. And if one can get their hands on one, I highly recommend the Z06. Post 2011 preferably. One other weak area are the HVAC actuators. Since the entire dashboard and console must come out to access them, I'd also recommend swapping out the A/C and heater cores. Which is what I had done.

I'm a fast wagon guy, have always loved them. The problem is the choice is so limited for new(ish) cars unless you want to go Euro brands. One reason I'm looking at SUVs now is because the wife hates not being able to see over all the other behemoth vehicles on the road. It's sad, but it's becoming a bit of the "If you can't beat them, join them" situation. If you want to go EV, also hardly any wagon choices... although the Denza Z9 is looking nice.

GREAT video. FYI, I was in Switzerland last year and I was surprised to see the overwhelming majority of the many 911s I saw were cabriolets. I saw so many I had to ask a few people. The same answer was given by all, and in the context of the location it was a very logical one. On a nice day in Switzerland, you can drop the top and see the mountain peaks as you drive. With a coupe, you have to crane your neck to look out the top of the windscreen or side windows. Makes sense!

1994 SW20 MR2 turbo owner here. Yes they are a pain to work on, but pretty much any owner works on their own car. It is not a car for the uninitiated both in the driving dynamics, and the concessions to ease of repair. They are SO good to drive though, and reward immensely on a track. They are particularly notable when similarly aged Nissans do 20% of the total laps at a track day that you have driven. You should definitely buy one, but set aside some money for a vehicle hoist also.

Gents, love the show, watching every episode since the beginning. As a suggestion for an episode, engine / drive train swaps. Keen to see what you would consider an engine swap into cars, in categories as you normally do. But has to be reasonable actual swap something that's possible that people could do as a project, and then get registered. And not just V8 swap everything. Improve the car for fun!. Just an idea, keen for your thoughts.

Always enjoyed all reviews of this channel. In regards to performance SUVs, those of us that choose it prefer not only as an all 4 seasons vehicle use, but also tired of the underbelly body panels/parts being rubbed, nicked, damaged and or scratched from uneven snow/ic roads wherein outside temperatures that dip below minus 40C, spreads salt and other rust encouraging chemical ice and snow melting properties on the roads.Another reason are countries that charge a stupendous amount on car insurance premiums where it isn't affordable to insure a 2 door performance sports cars or any 4 door performance sedans/SUVs - which leads buyers to only acquiring ONE all rounder performance SUV rather than 2 vehicles. For example, all 2 door vehicle (whether it be a hatch, wagon or some SUV are considered "sports car" in the eyes of insurace companies in Canada - ranging between $600- +$1K CDN a month to insure said vehicle within two of the most expensive provinces to live in.

It is my understanding that MINI never sold a R51 MINI. The first generation was the R50 for the lowest power ones, R52 for the convertible, and R53 for the hardtop. The R51 was intended to be a longer version. The R52 and R53 were the best MINIs ever made. They were far more reliable than the second generation and more fun to drive. Small things like cleaning the oil return pipes to the turbo is a tiny thing he does out of his own. Cheap as chips to maintain so far. Full cambelt service cost me $270 Australian. Please make a list now that is the opposite of this one. That's probably gonna be a very short video right?

I don’t think you can put Ferrari in this category. A Ferrari owner is buying the experience and Ferrari’s have never been known to be reliable. And they do hold their value reasonably well. But I can understand how it would be hard to hold back a rant on some of these vehicles. There is no excuse for car manufacturers to make such unreliable vehicles. Lexus can do it so it is possible. Some of these cars needs a piano dropping on them.

You’re wrong when it comes to the small cars. Owned an R53 (ordered new to 160k km, not one thing went wrong), ordered an R57 JCW, tuned to 240PS/395NM, had to replace the clutch, otherwise only maintenance, sold it with 145k km with the first engine, running fine. Bought my second R57 JCW, installed a KW Street Comfort (no more harsh/ bumpy ride), after 10 years it needed a new battery. Currently has 75k km, running perfectly fine with full power. Now I’m going to buy an Abarth competizione 2018 - facelift, which was introduced in 2017 I think (with full dealer warranty) and I’m pretty confident it will work fine as well. The problem with those cars are usually the owners, not taking care of them. Do your oil service all 10k km, let them warm up before driving hard, don’t only drive short distances and most of them will run perfectly fine. Those are not Toyotas but rather high performance vehicles, treat them as such and they’ll work as good as other performance cars.

Only sold it because I went back to uni & finances were tight. My long-time VW mechanic said it was becoming high-risk, so I sold it for $2k more than I paid for it after some minor cosmetic touch ups, 50k kms, and nothing more than brakes, a radiator & oil for servicing! Would still own this fantastic car if it weren’t for my mechanic’s risk-averse suggestions. Worth noting that several years later we’re back in a vw Passat bc it’s just the best driving car for what we need!

Thank you for dropping the truth bomb on the 34 GTR. They are great cars and I owned a built 32 GTR up until not long ago but.. unless you got them for 50-90k max, the R34 is simply not worth the money unless you’re chasing clout. All these crazy ones you see online with RB30’s and sequentials firstly have another 100k pumped into them, and secondly they’re not reliable. They’ll say they are but talk to anybody who has truly built a big HP GTR and ask when what number engine/gearbox they’re on.

He wasn't given what he wanted to trade it in against a brand new at the time 23 reg Cupra Ateca . He advertised it someone from Australia even watched he sold it to someone from Scarborough about 70 miles away. The car didn't do a 1000 miles a year. Agree with all the comments on performance SUV, the only exception to the rule, which barely makes it into performance category because of its diesel engine, is diesel variants of the Skoda Kodiaq RS. Truckloads of rear leg room and boot space, drives like a sedan, one of the nicest cars to tow with (towed a race car for two years, tows better than a Landcruiser and Defender, great visibility reversing trailers, maintains and accelerates easily at highway speeds including inclines while towing) and great on the city rat run. Only disappointment is the front door speakers, cheap ‘felt’ like carpets and couldn't they afford to put a nicer leather steering wheel similar to that from a Golf. Great on fuel, real life average 7.5/100 around town, 6.5L/100 on longer trips and under 11L/100 towing a race car thanks to the DSG gear box.

What! FK8. All the cars on the list are either unreliable, expensive to own, have poor build quality or have disappointing driving dynamics. Then you recommend nobody buys the FK8. It's a great car with none of these issues. It's inclusion seems to be based primarily on how it looks. Anyone considering buying one can see what they look like. After living with the facelift version for 3yrs most other cars look boring in comparison. It's good to have some variety. It is still fantastic to drive and so far it's been cheap to own. I took spirited test drives in all the other hot hatches at the time and it felt in a different league. The GR Yaris was also fun but it has very limited space. I've previously owned a Cayman s and Boxster GTS and I was shocked at how good the fk8s handling was in comparison given how much stuff I can fit in it and the relative price point / cost of ownership.
