It's a unique channel. There are thousands of new car channels, lots of "see how I repair my expensive car" channels but hardly any channels dealing with used cars most of us can actually afford. And the typical Aussie humor is a bonus.

With the used car warranties, they can totally be worthwhile if you are a lawyer 😂 My best mate is a lawyer & had a near-new BMW 135i which he bought a 3-yr warranty for. Car turned out to be an absolute lemon, and he had about $15k worth of work carried out for free. But he definitely had to use his legal skills to get that work done.

Very well engineered and capable of doing over 350000km without any problems. Great engine and lovely to drive. Smooth and comfortable and great looking. People always stopped me to talk about the car.

When it comes to imports, I have a 2008 Nissan skyline 370gt, I didn't import it, the previous guy did. Insurance is a pain because most companies don't think it exists, but at 1700 a year it's not super bad once I found a company who would insure it. If people care, only 2 companies I found that knew it existed was Shannons and AAMI.

I have a 2010 Mazda3 with 328K klm’s on it. Bought it with 320K on it . I’m the 2nd owner, first owner had a full Mazda service history during the warranty period, then at a local mechanic . The only things that have gone wrong is the transmission control module (a common issue) which is why I bought the car for very cheap and fixed it myself ( bought a reconditioned module) . Unfortunately 10 months later the abs module failed ( a common problem for the early BL series) , and a reconditioned module cost me $1800 + gst fitted. Other than that, just the usual maitenance items, car still going strong.

Completely agree with the aftermarket parts for the Euros. I had to do the water pump on my TDi Octavia. metal Gates version with the movable sleeve delete for $300 with a timing belt kit. Actually did it myself which sounds horrendous, but I've done this kind of work before and watched lots of YT vids. Had to do the water pump on my 99 Corolla a week earlier and apart from getting the parts that arvo instead of waiting 3 weeks, the jobs were similarly difficult (for different reasons).

Check out their video on the Toyota Corolla Sportivo mate. Honestly they’re fairly reliable. They all leak a bit of oil around the sump, timing cover and valve cover, which is pretty standard for a high performance engine. These can all be re-sealed/gaskets replaced fairly easily. Some people have snapped valves and exploded oil pump gears or killed motors from oil starvation but that’s only from being driven very very hard for a long time on a race track

I'm an Aussie working in the Philippines and you'd be surprised how many Chinese made cars there are here, and they're really popular here, and known to be pretty reliable. I have a 2022 Ford Territory which is made in China, and not sold in Australia, even though Ford Australia helped develop it and tuned the suspension system. So far it's been excellent and it's fully loaded with features such as full ADAS, 360 Camera, auto parking, panoramic sunroof, Harmon Kardon sound system etc. It's great for the roads here since it's a cross over with good ground clearance. Some of the BYD cars are excellent, and they're a lot cheaper than their Japanese and Korean counterparts. I've owned Mercedes, Porsche, Alfa, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai and a few others, and Chinese products these days are as good as the Japanese, and as reliable. Their interiors are very high end too. They obviously don't drive like German cars, but for what they do, they're very good. We've got to stop thinking of Chinese products as crap.

I totally agree with you on the EV narrative. I’m sick to death of this being pitched as a republican vs Democrat argument as in you have to be in one camp hating the other. Just because I have zero interest in ever owning an EV, I respect that they might be great for someone and their circumstances. And equally I can’t stand militant EV owners that think anyone who wants anything different is a dinosaur. There’s a place for EV in a mix of other types and I wish companies would plough cash into the research and production of synthetic fuels which are carbon neutral.
