@@nickuber2573I don't understand that philosophy. If this is the guy you identified as your ace and gave up 4 prospects for him and two are in the top 100 prospects, then why not sign him immediately. It's more of the cost control BS, yet you have a 26 year old future star. Wait a year and it will cost them more and they run the risk of Crochet saying no thanks, I'll take my chances in a year in free agency. I can't imagine he's looking for the giant contract that Fried , Snell or Burnes commands. I hate to say it, but it seems like more John Henry cheapass BS. Pay the guy and go on to the next free agent or trade you've identified. You have plenty of money available John.

No, they knew they were going to be out bid by one of the New York teams or the Dodgers. Certainly by Steve Cohen! It was just that same ol' smoke and mirrors BS. If they were willing to spend that they could have went out and signed Corbin Burnes, Max Fried and T, Hernandez for that much or less. They would have had one of the best rotations in baseball. It would have been that easy. But they won't because they lie continuously and fans keep showing up. Corbin Burnes is sitting there for the taking and nothing. He is the best one on the market ( better than Snell and Fried). They'll go out and get wash ups and bargain basement players. Why? Because they don't care about us or putting the best team out on the field. They care only about their bottom line. But shame on us for knowing it and buying any tickets, merchandise and whatever else. You want change. DON'T buy anything. Dry them up. Then they'll either spend or sell. Sell would be the best option. Breslow he's nothing more than one of their tools. He's a lame duck.

I’ve been thinking about the bullpen. We had stability for a couple of years with Martin and Jansen. Presumably Chapman and Hendricks backfill them. However they are both under contract for just this year. With the Sox core entering a window where they will contend having some backend bullpen stability is desirable. I think the Sox should prioritize Tanner Scott for four years ($56-$60 million). Doing so gives the young guys such as Slaten, Guerrero, Kelly time to develop into solid backend pieces. As for the starting rotation I would be perfectly fine with a Buehler or Luzardo (if the medical reports check out). The Sox do not need to spend outrageously, just selectively in the right places to fill gaps.

@ I know they have not spent. When I say outrageously I do not think they have to spend $240 million for Burnes for an 8 year contract that has a very high probability of being a millstone around the neck in the later years. So go mid-tier get a Buehler, or a Luzardo…on a shorter term deal that gives mid rotation performance as a floor with some upside. Spend the money on a solid reliever such as Scott and a righty bat such as Teoscar who I’ve read is talking 3 years at around $20 million per year.

Corbin, I agree with your assessment. The prices of premium players have skyrocketed over the last couple of years. Armchair fans are not MLB GM's or owners shelling out millions. Very few players are worth the truckload of time and money that they think they are worth. Small market teams do not win championships, but they are rewarded and learn to survive with small payrolls, by the large market clubs that go over the tax threshold. It's not Monopoly money, though. It's a business. LOL

I think that part of this is that we haven't had the guys that we signed in the past healthy. A number of guys over the last 4 years have sat out the season due to injury. These guys should be on the field this year. We also have a number of top rated prospects who can contribute if called upon. If these guys are healthy and play to their potential there's no reason why we shouldn't be in the playoffs.
@The300Show

Is it not a possibility that the Red Sox (and just about everyone else) are waiting for the market to cool down a bit before making any other moves? These teams that are spending insane money are going to wind up regretting it and many of them do not have the farm system to supplement their own major league rosters. The Red Sox do have the farm to build from within even if they lack crazy pitching depth within the upper minor league roster. That being said, do I think they should continue to not spend money that they very clearly have? No, I think they should be making deals with players, but I think giving a guy (especially a pitcher) that is 30+ a longer high money deal has the potential to cost them in the long run. Think about the last guy they gave a contract to like that. That contract was a 7-year $217 million deal to David Price and they were comfortable packaging him with Mookie to the Dodgers which ruined Mookie's value. Do we really want to go through all of that BS again? It is definitely frustrating to watch the relative inaction. I do think the Red Sox are approaching this from the right angle. Hold out and see what happens with Burnes to see if you can land him on a shorter-term higher AAV deal and if you can't pivot to Buehler or someone like him that has decent upside who will command less years and money. Take it easy guys. I know it isn't easy with how things have gone, but I do think patience is the right decision.

I'm not getting the position players unless Bregman is being added and Mayer traded along with Abreu. Still a Wong Casas Grissom Bregman Story Campbell Duran Anthony still leaves Abreu Mayer blocked and Rafaela as a super utility player. If Burnes is added it makes sense. Burnes Crochet Houck Bello Kutter with Giolti Fitts Priester Dobbins and Perales as depth or Long Relief in the BP. IMHO Buehler fits. Abreu Kutter and Grissom can be moved for a Bubba Chandler Ashcroft Mueth and a top position player. Mayer can take over at 3B or 2B by June 15th or Campbell plays 2B moving Rafaela back to CF. It seems like Teel may have been the truest move. Soxsend Mayer and the team just waits until he is ready and Wong gets a Utilty role. I really want a Snelling White, Painter McFarlane Chandler Mueth or a Sheenan May. Sheeran is a great 5 SP. He had a 3 possibly 2 SP ceiling. May can go to the BP and dominate and LAD get a GG RF with 20HR pop at the end of their lineup. Who would complain if Boston comes out of this with a Crochet Houck Buehler Bello Chandler rotation with Giolito returning in June. A BP where Liam Whitlock Hoffman Chapman Slaten Guerro and Fulmer or Fitts. Honestly, the offense looks great. If Boston could move Kutter for Montcastle and Bastillo... it works. Last offseason the front office infamously claimed they were going “full throttle” and then within a couple days of season ticket sales closing they announced a self imposed salary cap that fell well below the luxury tax threshold. John Henry is also embarrassed and humiliated about being a cheapskate, as he should be, so he’s doing his best to act like they want to spend when he knows damn well they have no interest. They threw mediocre offers that they knew weren’t going to win at ohtani and Soto so they can say “well we tried”. From whose perspective? Business owners- including businesses that happen to be sports franchises- tend to see gain/loss in terms of dollars more than any winning percentage. If they can present a sufficiently convincing illusion of commitment to giving the fan base a winner to keep ticket, merchandise, and media sales profitable they won't have to actually spend the cash which they can pocket. Sox ownership is banking on fan loyalty to be strong enough where stinginess is not going to be sufficiently punished. If mediocrity proves profitable then that's what we're going to get. Paying top dollar for talent is itself a gamble.

I agree with what the Sox may be trying to do, however I think the problem is that they either wait too long (Making offer to Snell) or they some in low and get out bid (Fried to Yankees). At some point I think Sox fans want them to be aggressive and say hey here you go we are slightly overpaying come here before other teams do that. Waiting and Underbidding is what they have had the last 3 years and is continuing on this year. We still have a month to go and hopefully they bring in some top tier talent either via trade or FA or we may see them spend some money on players like Wilson and Chapman and trades for depth positions. The Sox should be in prove it to the fans mode right now and not lets hold off until we get a price we like mode. Still think anyone they get will be a surprise and not anyone who we have heard rumors on, so who knows what they are going to do. Thank you for keeping us updated. Well one point I would like to make is this.. The sox were never even close on Soto. It's one thing to be within 10-20 mil however as you said the contract that bought him with incentives could be worth 800 mil. FSG laid out the 700 mil offer knowing very well Soto would go for far more, they made a big deal over sending Pappi to talk to Soto, the dominican pipeline blah blah blah. It comes down to the fact that FSG was never going to go as high as the mets did. Crochet .. fantastic.. at least they've done that much. I do think your right Corbin FSG is going to sit back and see where this market transition's from the players in question basically naming their own price to "damn I better sign somewhere soon". It's either that or they are going to go for more mid market talent. My guess is.. they run with the rotation they have and make a play to get a respectable 2nd basemen.

However the overriding trend in the industry of late has been to pay plyrs to their 38-39-40 year old status in order to 1. Sign the plyr and 2. Lessen the cap hit by spreading out the years ( See Judge Soto Fried) so if you try to wait out the market for a plyrs price to come down you run the risk of losing the plyr - furthermore in order to get Sox fans back on board and increase ticket sales it would behoove them to sign a plyr

I think another reason the pitching market has stalled is because there's a HUGE right handed free agent still out there in Roki Sasaki. I feel like a lot of teams are holding out on these other older and more expensive free agents for a chance at Sasaki. If we think we have a chance at Sasaki, why wouldn't we go after him instead of Burnes?

You have done it again! Rational thinking about Redsox!👏 Perfectly timed video! Thanks Corbin! Breslow said he's looking for righty bat and more depth pitching. My expectation are guys like Hernandez or Santander (3 yrs/options) and Buehler or Flaherty (2-3 yrs/options). They trade Yoshida (eat portion of contract) for bullpen depth or defense type catching.

Fyi Corbin Burmes just turned 30 and if given a 7 year deal he will be 36 years old in his final year. And btw,he was lights out from september on and got his velocity back. And had more movement on his sweeper too. If it were me Id be giving him 7/231 with incentives for an 8th year if 7th year is lights out and hes healthy. Thats 33 per..If the guy is Burnes.

If they want a pitcher, make a deal for Lazardo or one of the Ms YOUNG arms. Trade for Arenado, move Devers to DH, and include Yoshida and half of his contract in a deal. You have Abreu, Duran, and Anthony in the OF with Raffaele as well. Meyer is trade bait now

I believe they definitely have an aversion to overspending. In particular they don't like adding too many years, and end up with some "dead weight" clogging up their roster. You might say that when the Price is so high, they're afraid to close the Sale because they don't want to get Burned again. Which is why they should sign Flaherty now, because you can't make an ominous pun with his name. :) No, the real reason they should sign Flaherty now is his market is probably lower than it will be after Burnes signs, and we know they aren't really willing to pay what Burnes ought to get. Of course Flaherty would not want to sign now, for the same reason. But maybe impatience and uncertainty will make it hard for Flaherty to turn down a good offer. I suspect many teams want to stall until the signing period for Roki Sasaki opens next month, if they really only have space for one more starter. Why spend big on Burnes or the other guys when you can have Sasaki for cheap? Regardless, maybe the Red Sox just need to talk Burnes into a contract with lots of opt outs and performance-based incentives, to both reduce their risk exposure and give Burnes the total he wants to reach. Or maybe they really are just in it for show. In which case, quit the pretense, stop pursuing Burnes, and go after Flaherty with a shorter-term contract offer.

The contracts given to the elite Free Agents just don't make any sense to a team like the Red Sox that are highly immersed in the analytial approach. Watch, instead, what deals they make with the second-tier free agents. Although it is frustrating to see the "super-studs" go elsewhere, in the long run, I trust in the more conservative approach. If a large, long-term contract, goes bad, then the Sox are not in a position to recover, like the Mets or Dodgers.

I don’t like most of the free agents they’ve been linked to. I don’t think it really helps them. Locking up Bregman to play 2B when you have Campbell ready to go seems silly to me. Locking up Teoscar when you have Anthony ready to go seems silly to me. Buehler is not an upgrade over Kutter Crawford (he might be but he’s so damn risky). If we got burnes he absolutely would be. I think that’s the guy, when Sasaki goes to the dodgers, Red Sox should lock up, unless they think they can make a Jared jones deal and think he has another level to go, having an ace 5 years of control at 22 is so much better than paying 35x8 for Burnes at 30 imo. I would look to do what the Yankees just did with bellinger and acquire high salaried players from mid market teams looking to shed payroll. Less of a years commitment and shouldn’t cost you much

I have an outside the box idea that could prove very beneficial. Let’s say we trade Casas, Abreu, and a prospect for miller or woo. An overpay for sure. What if we platooned 1B and taught Yoshida first base while signing Goldschmidt? .839 ops vs LHP Paul Goldschmidt 2024, Yoshida .832 ops vs RHP. Hell if Scott Hatteberg can be a serviceable 1B why can’t Yoshida ? Is this too money ball? Plus it’d free up signing Guerrero in the offseason to play 1B and switch Devers to DH.contingent on signing Bremen as well. in a vaccume this may work. Thoughts?

The Sox are taking a data driven approach. If they haven’t signed the person, it’s gotta be because their models do not project that player’s value to be in the ballpark of what they are asking for. They just hired Taylor Smith, former director of predictive modeling for the Rays, as Assistant GM and Kyle Boddy, data driven player development founder of Driveline baseball, as a special consultant. Moneyball 2.0 is happening right now with machine learning and this is why the Sox are not spending big and bolstering their minor league system. I get the typical fan frustration of our big market club not spending but I think the Sox are taking an unwavering data driven approach. These deals as you just said, pretty much do not make sense. I don’t think we can criticize the Sox too much for not making deals that do not make sense

I’d be open to trading Anthony for a young hardthrowing SP. Why wait until a guy is 29-30 and pay for years up until 40? Henry is definitely right. It doesn’t equate to sound business practice. But, when you have prospects like the Red Sox do, you go to a Pittsburgh or Seattle and make a trade. And when you’re talking about pitching, I do that Anthony trade EVERY time. If you pair Jones of Pittsburgh and Crochet along with Houck and Bello, that’s a young, dynamic staff that could mature all at once. I’m not in love with prospects. Especially hitters. I value pitching and defense, and when you need power or obp and speed, you go and get that guy in FA. Red Sox absolutely need to develop their own pitching. This is why they got Bailey and made Breslow the defacto GM. I like Burnes, but no way is he getting an 8 year contract from Henry. And this is why I respect Henry. The fans are just impatient. It is what it is. Everyone should be open to a win win type of trade. Why not? This having to win every trade just leads to paralysis. There’s still an unanswered question of whether Mayer will play 3B. Someone said he might be willing to play 2B. Better find out. I hate hearing RS front office being timid or scared to ask questions. Afraid they might upset some kids agent. Who cares? I wouldn’t apologize for asking the question. Hell, I wouldn’t object to TELLING an agent where his client will play. If he objects, you tell him he could languish down on the farm for awhile or take a trade to Miami or Las Vegas.

You can only spend big if you win the negotiation and guys sign here. If Burnes goes elsewhere (he's from California) and they go for the next tier (say Buehler for two and an option, ~$30 mil), then they very well could end up spending less than $150 mil on another starter, righty bat and reliever in free agency. Doesn't mean that they aren't spending or making quality additions, just not multiple really long deals for big totals. Buehler for that plus Teoscar Hernandez or Santander for 3-4 plus a reliever and I'd be pretty happy. 13:22

I don’t want Henry paying long term contracts. These guys are not going to get them. They play that long and their defense and speed deteriorates. Boras pisses me off. Don’t do business with him. Bring these long term contracts down. Yankees are going to learn. They sign Fried and Bellinger up in their 30’s. I think having prospects and being patient is the way to go. In decades past you always had RH bats. Why are there so many LH bats now? Something right there is weird. So, the million dollar question….can Mayer play 3B? I remember Xander played 3B to get to the majors.

I say sign Roki Sasaki and put some $ down on a legit RH hitter. I guess I like Teoscar Hernandez over Bregman and Santander, but any one of these three, I would be happy with... BUT, until they actually sign a decent free agent, I will assume it's the same old story; the Red Sox will end up "being interested" in some FA's only to "lose out" in the end and sign a few guys off the junk pile. I've been burned too many times before to fall for the same old thing again. I hope I'm surprised. I will admit I was happy with them getting Crochet.
