I simply love, love the guara plant. This information is valuable to my growing guara. I was using very most organic soil and did not get strong shots as seen in the video. I will start using the loomy soil fron now on and wait to see what happens. Thanks so much.

Hi Maggie it is such a beautiful plant especially when the wind blows and it sways. Try pairing with verbena bonariensis as it too is light or Yarrows.

That Gaura tap root is SPECTACULAR, It shows how healthy the initial mother plant is. Thank you for showing that part 👍

I have some of these here in Texas and they have done well. This year I will try your advice and trim them during the summer. I have 2 pink ones in the front yard and 2 white ones in the backyard. The white ones had a bunch of aphids on them last year. That inhibited the flowers alot. I did my best to remove them. I have not seen any new ones growing from seed yet.

Last year I found seedlings growing in the grass. Was so happy so transplanted them. Yes cut them back in early summer and and you will get an extra blooming season.

Learned a lot in this video. I have a tri color rainbow gaura the comes up very well in the spring, but with the first hard rain flops over & then stays laying down. My stems at that point are soft & not woody, so the tips try to grow up, but the original growth is laying on the patio. At what point should I prune to make it grow more upright?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Sorry for that, if the flower has flopped, what you do is follow the flower stalk to where you get the growth point of the flower(usually where there are opposing branching) remove the stalk from there.

Hi Alice. Your video is most informative on gaura plant. Last Spring I planted two pink gauras in a big container. They bloomed all into frost. I live in zone 7 here in NY. I accidentally cut them down too low during winter. I don’t see any new growth, does this mean I lost the plant? I’m sadden. This is the first time growing them.

Hi Sammy, thank you for following our channel. With the Gaura plant, during the winter period the plant goes dormant. It has deep taproots and provided the soil is well draining and it has not received too much moisture around its' root it should be fine. Secondly being a herbaceous perennial once the weather gets warmer ( late April to Mid May) it will regrow below ground level and not from the stems. Keep looking at the base of the plant to see if new shoots start emerging. Lets keep our fingers crossed and good luck.

Thank you. There are not a lot of videos on Gaura. I was wondering if you take the seeds and plant yourself in containers will they germinate. I bought some store bought seeds but no instructions anywhere on when to plant. I would like a large container with these and it’s Fall now in zone 7A.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Hi Madeline, yes do try to grow the seeds. It needs temperatures between 18 - 24 degrees to germinate and takes about a month. If you experience colder weather, try growing them indoors in your kitchen, as its warmer. In the garden, I find Gaura seedlings around my pots and in area that I have planted the Gaura. So I believe you will have success.

Would u take cuttings during summer? Or inly in Spring?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Yes you can take cutting during Spring and Summer. Provided you follow the right temperature, water and light requirements. When I propagate plants during our summer, if its too hot, I usually bring them into my kitchen. As they receive indirect sun, and light requirement is adequate and I can manage the moisture level of the soil.

What other plants can you pair with guara plants when growing in a container?
@redsoilgardener

Try Yarrow or the Verbena Bonariensis,or even in front of ornamental grass, as it too will sway in unison.

Great video. Thanks. Are plastic bags still illegal?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Cherly, sorry for sending you wrong message I just realised today. I had travelled to the UK and was still jet lagged. Yes Kenya did banned the use of the three years ago on single use plastic bags. However, the containers I use are recyclable, so that is permitted. I use the containers as they are practical for propagation, I always make holes at the bottom for drainage.

Can guara be grown in water? I am thinking to try cutting mine. I have bella with the dark pink flowers and island guara with the tall wispy stems that bloom pink and white. You put the cuttings in soil but is water an option?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Yes a water propagation does work, ensure that the node is in the water and do change the water every four days. Place the container with the cutting in an warm area with indirect sunlight. Happy gardening.

How do you dig out the taproot? It's so long!
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca, I had actually had the plant growing in a large pot and did break the pot in order to get that taproot. However, for propagation purposes, you can dig deep around the plant and pull the taproot out ( though it will get damaged). But provided the new stems are on the taproot you will be fine

I call it cherry blossoms on the ground. I had them in clusters and then died in a couple of years, maybe d/t our weather in NC zone 7a-b. Or drought. Comments welcome. 😊
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Ай бұрын
Hi so sorry for loosing your cherry blossom plant. I I have outlined some points below, from what I understand is the Gaura plant died en mass. 1. The problem could be with the tap root. Gauras have long tap roots and if you overwater, in that having constant wet soil around the tap root, the tap rootwill die and you will loose the plant. 2. Also check for pest 3. Overwinter - was it a cold wet winter that affected the taproot? let me now your thoughts
