5:13 basically, by sending a very short pulse to a piston, you can skip the extension animation, pushing a block instantly (for sticky pistons). With some clever layouts you can make 3x3 and 4x4 with instant closing. Also, the boats are used for the sand. When sand reaches the hitbox of the boat, it teleports instantly to the block the sand falling on (if there is a block under)
