A big upgrade for our boat! We're installing a new entirely independent autopilot system. What's your experience with autopilots? Any tips for using wind vanes for the first time. Let us know in the comments!

Oi.... how much does a few blocks of Teak cost these days? Hawaii-Alaska-Vancouver, eh? I am NOT sure that Summer is the best time to hit Alaska, not from a weather standpoint or if 21 hours of daylight is something you'd want to deal with. But good luck with that.... or maybe you are already there?
@rickkwitkoski19768 күн бұрын
@TeuluTribe Look at some other sailing channels with hydrovanes. They are good, usually. And autopilots. Sam Holmes has used some CHEAP ones, don't! Other people have had other problems too. Nothing is perfect but everything CAN help. Don't do what Adam on Millennial Falcon did with their hydrovane! Be careful! Holly on Wind Hippie sailing,The Gecko, has a cheap autopilot but her boat is also half your volume or so. And as you are aware, a hydrovave only works well when the wind direction is constant. A variable direction will NOT be fun. You will be adjusting the hydrovane rudder constantly. You can do it!

When I left to go cruising in 2012, all I had the money for was a new Raymarine gear driven rotary drive autopilot. I had a Hunter 376 and putting a windvane on one is no easy task and it kind of defeats the purpose of a sugar scoop. The first few months of cruising I would ask other cruisers who had windvane how much they used it. Most said rarely at all, used autopilot 95% of the time. I wasn't convinced about autopilots until I met a couple who had just finished their 23 year around the world trip (in Bahamas). They said they only used the windvane, other than testing and learning it, once on a leg from Tonga to NZ because the autopilot hydraulic hoses busted. He said he really wished he fixed them before as they were leaking and he knew it was going to be a problem. He fixed it in NZ and never used it again. He said that was the only problem they had with their autopilot. So instead of putting down 3k to 5k for a new windvane, I just ordered another autopilot the same as the one I had just installed a few months earlier. After 40K miles and halfway around the world, I never needed the spare. The idea was though that if any of the 5 parts broke, I could swap out a new part in 5 to 10 minutes and be on my way. I sold the boat in Fiji with the spare still in the boxes it came with. This summer I just replaced the 35 year old B&G autopilot with a larger type 3 Raymarine hydraulic Autopilot on our current boat that we are getting ready for another run at around the world. I am debating on if I should get a whole new spare or just the computer. The difference this time is I will always have crew of 3 and 5 for long trips where as before I was solo so if I have a problem, we can hand steer to get to port just like I did on the offshore races I used to do. Sure, you have to power them, but I had solar panels and wind generator so I was not lacking power and on current boat I have 1,200 watts of solar. Power these days is cheap. I am sure you heard this before, but autopilot can work in every condition but wind vane doesn't work when the wind is light or no wind (motoring) and many claim it doesn't work in very bad stuff either because the big waves block the wind. So, if you have a windvane and plan on that being your pilot, you'll also want an autopilot. Me, I just chose to have 2 autopilots.

Hydrovane...the epitome of British engineering inventiveness. I went to Kirkby in Ashfield where they still manufacture them to pick mine up. The inventor, Derek Daniels who has actually retired was there, standing in for someone on holiday. Since 1968 he has improved the design to make it the best independent windvane you can buy. You won't regret buying it. Bill

I've always been fascinated by wind vanes and how they developed in the 60's allowing the first solo Atlantic races and then world circumnavigation. I was so obsessed that I made one for my 10 foot dinghy...it kinda worked. I'd love one on my 30ft Westerly but really can't justify it as I'm now old and don't go that far! Your engineering skills never fail to amaze me though Zack and Becca. Nice to hear Becca in the video, hope she's back with you soon. Hydrovane looks great. As you’ll no doubt be aware, a big benefit of the auxiliary rudder type wind-vane is the ability to easily and quickly use it as an emergency rudder, should the main rudder/linkages fail.
@TeuluTribe8 күн бұрын
Absolutely! The Hydrovane's versatility as an emergency rudder is a game-changer for us. It really enhances safety out on the water.
@FranklinGray7 күн бұрын
About the vane, don't just use it. You have to constantly check the hardware on it. The bolts have a tendency to work their way free and then things fall into the drink. And you can't just forget it as it steers by wind and the wind shifts all the time and your course will change. Many have fallen into the trap and found they were going the wrong way for a day or two. As for autopilots, if you have a spade rudder which is very common these days, you can 'balance' the rudder by adding a bit of foam and fiberglass to the leading edge to completely balance it. If you do that, the autopilot will never have a problem. It takes the stress of the pilot and all the steering gear too. I did that on my Hunter and it was night and day difference on what it could handle. One time I woke up in the cockpit and the boat was doing 1.5 knots over hull speed with the AWA at 175 which is normally dangerous and true wind speed of 28 knots and I had all my sails up in a wing on wing setup. I watched it for 30 minutes to see how it handled it in the following seas before I reduced sail.

For sealing ports, hatches and windows, what I do is use Boatlife Lifeseal (not life-caulk). If it's something that lays flat I don't use screws. The holding power of Lifeseal is amazing and it will not come off without you cutting it with a blade if laid properly. If I am laying something sideways, I use the screws to hold it in place while it cures, then take the screws out and fill those holes with lifeseal. The reason I do it this way is screws heat up and expand at a different rate than fiberglass. Eventually the screws leak. Do it the way I do and you will not leak in 30 years. LIfeseal is extremely flexible and that is why it lasts forever and also treated to deal with UV. Lifeseal is also testing to hold better than Sekaflex. Also, if you are to keep Lifeseal, or just about any of it on the boat in the tropics, you have to store it in the frig. I put at the bottom. It will last years that way. If not, you are lucky to get a few months out of it before it goes hard. Also, always check for hardness when buying. Marine stores in the tropics have shelves full of bad stuff.

Nice job. Having a wind vane is a great addition. For what it's worth, when you needed to bevel that bottom piece of teak to fit the transom, the way to do it tidily is to mark the depth you want the bevel and then you can use a saw to cut grooves between the full thickness edge and the mark you've made for the bevel. Then the grooves act as a depth gauge for sanding the bevel across the whole surface. Does that make sense??

Zak when she sees you chiseling wood on her custom table you are going to suffer😂. I would have just put another piece of heavy epoxied ply or wood across the transom inside just bolted on . I watch a couple up in California who have an older dailing boat with a tapered stern or canoe stern and they removed theirs last month.. they were going to sling it ...i told them dont and explained why.. You never know real time V video time if i got through to them but theirs was mounted off a single large dia tube through their shaped stern ..that they had to remove and infill. Good job on the windvane .. was everything not in the instructions about the bracket distances 🤔🧙🏻♂️😂🇬🇧

Thanks for sharing your insights! It’s always interesting to hear about different approaches to boat modifications. I did say in the instructions but I must have missed it 😅

I am wondering how to resolve it on other, usually newer boats that have open stern or flap and electronic autopilot. Shall I trust to electronics or not or just need a different boat for ocean crossings..

If you're going where it's really cold can't you make those windows double glazing by adding an inner pain? You just need about 1 cm gap in between the pains, and that should retain some heat.

That's a great suggestion! We'll have a think about it 😊

I think it will be a pain to put in another pane.

Not sure about the rest of the boat, but the transom will outlive your grandchildren! 😉

I understand it’s your boat but if it was me I would not use fiberglass I would install a sizable few mill thick stainless steel plate the width of your transom.
