I’ve had my current tank for 10+ years the only two parameters I have checked in the last two years are salinity and PH. I have been going slowly to full blown SPS tank. At the moment I have one style of mushrooms, two hammers and the rest is SPS. Everything is growing like weeds and I have not lost a coral in years (knock on wood)

Ok i must have been half asleep when writing my question, it was basically about what effects pH has on freshwater plants vs salt water and whether or not its importance was the same or weighted to one side. My pH with test strips (i know, but marine is my goal and i wanted something in my office until i can afford a red sea max tank) is somewhere in the range of 7.6-8.4, and the test strip instructions dont tell you what it means to be high or low! thanks for clarifying on pH though, was interesting to hear about! p.s. i hate test strips, orange, red and pinky purple all look the same, just like those monti's ;)

My ph peaks little above 8.7 with ATI Essentials+ and fresh CO2 media. The low is now above 8.3. It's crazy, I recalibrated the APEX PH probe and it's correct. So now I'm wondering...how high is to high? Growth is great lol, I notice if ph goes above 8.5 the alkalinity uptake goes sky high.

I've never seen anyone commit to an answer to that question! Chumingham's reef runs insanely high pH without issue - his tank is spectacular

@@ReefDork well today hit 8.8. My Apex lost connection and the lights didn't follow schedule and ran 6 hours longer on full blast until I got home. I need to sort this out, lights are controlled by MXM module via Apex. If Apex loses connection the light stop following their program. Luckily my skimmer cup was full which turned the skimmer off or the ph would be even higher.
