Yeah tarping sucks. Not all flatbed deals require tarping though. I run mainly rebar which doesn't require tarping. The reason most drivers do not like reefer is they think they're losing money when they're sitting because technically you make more money driving than you do sitting. They thank i could be driving and making more money which for the most part is true. I've hauled everything and the kitchen sink like you and somehow or another I've ended up pulling flatbed. Seems to work for me. I'm home most nights and I make decent money. Don't get me wrong. It's still hard work and I'm butt crack tired when I get home. Chaining or strapping on and off two to three times a day in 105° weather is draining.

I think one advantage of flat bed work is better visibility behind and around your trailer.

I always liked the exercise I got when doing stepdeck. Plus the customers appreciated me better. It was like being the UPS guy on delivery. I find with Reefer the customers hate me cause I'm bringing them work. I think in the long run with my truck being paid off I'll probably get a stepdeck for running summer and reefer for winter running.

DAMNIT CASH, I left Foodservice for flatbed, i like the challenges with awkward or oversized loads to secure it. However, it’s not all that physical at all, TO ME. I did foodservice and that was some fun-fast-ramp running work right there.

Flatbed is harder and your more likely to get injured. There is nothing worse than securing a load in the Fresno summer sun, having a load shift because you were cut off, or having to make adjustments on the side of the freeway in weather with traffic zipping by you at 70+ mph, shit happens! I admire a great tarp job....I didn't do it often and it always took me a lot longer than most. Drivers should be getting least $100 from the carrier at both loading and unloading, its hard work. Reefer is a breeze in comparison...

Starting my 2nd go-round with the reefer side of the business on Monday, going in for check ride today. This time with a carrier that has solid direct customers and “about 50%” drop and hook. Coming from 19 years with a dedicated fleet and then being an owner operator with a stepdeck, it’s going to take me some time to get over the need to keep the wheels rolling and have a regular sleep schedule… I’m kinda solar powered. :-D

A tip for anyone wanting to do flatbed find good small local company less trucks the better for example I pay my driver 26 percent home every other day mostly no tarp or coil bag but I hauled Bremen Indiana to shepardsville KY insulation 5k weight no tarp load paid 1700 tmc driver gets 27 percent and tmc claims load pays 750 even tho they had it posted on dat load board for 1500 all large carriers take loads Much cheaper and is why u don't see many small company's where they load because they drive down rate the two drivers I showed called thier company and tmc couldn't explain why one quit the other said he was but idk for sure they was really getting screwed not just on the one load on all loads I'm not sure if the other guy did for sure or not

I’ve seen guys raising hell about waiting & I’m like it’s part of the job. Longest I’ve waited was 13 hours for cold storage in Tacoma. Then the DM on duty got mad at me because I was going to shut down & get some sleep. I told that chick for my life & the lives of others, I don’t feel safe driving. As if working 70-80 hour weeks is for the faint of heart.

I refuse multi stops. Only take 1,500 mile or more runs. In summer time run Cali produce and meat back in. Reefer has gotten so much easier since covid. No more pulping or counting its basically all shipper load count because they don't want you on the dock.

driving flatbed steel pipe pretty much my whole trucking life thinking about leaving . I often get freight thats not banded wrapped properly or box pallets on a flatbed that keep going loose and you have to pull over on highway with straps flapping . Plus the extra responsibility I think i'm leaving flatbed . What attracted me to flatbed is getting out and moving around playing with straps chains vs sitting all day long kills your body . I'm fortunate i dont have to tarp !!!!!
@ryanbrooks7737

I've never gotten paid for securement. Company side I get tarp pay, OOp I just get paid by the load upon delivery. Flatbed seems to be less miles, but much more pay because some loads are definitely a headache. I typically run 6am to 8pm, hardly ever use less than 14hrs a day.

Flat bed is ok if you are hourly and it is unfinished construction structural steel that don’t require tarping still a lot of work but no tarping reefer no good too much waiting product handling you are responsible for maintaing correct temperatures and you better be a reefer mechanic too and know what to do if that thing goes down you got to know where to get dry ice and you got to know the pallet exchange game you got to know how to judge produce but you got to pay attention too details on steel & lumber conditions actually Dump work is easy metal & glass recycling not excavating

Update on the Western Express saga... I just did a 34 hour reset waiting to get 4 lights 3 tires and a shock done. 24 of that was spent waiting on Western Express's breakdown process... Even though I'm sitting in a TA shop parking lot. None of that time is paid. I put all that off to this point because the last time I needed a tire and an air line and it was an actual road side emergency... It took 18 hours... Sitting on the fog line... Before that got handled. None of that time was paid. 🤣 So I knew I was fucked either way. It's better to be fucked somewhere that has a toilet, running water, and a crying game shower available. Lost my load because of it. But if I'd gone to get the 47 thousand lbs flatbed load 80 miles away and drove back 80 miles in the direction of the delivery and the shop... My luck is I would have finally got hit up by the DOT or ended up doing my 34 waiting on roadside, on the roadside, with a load on. Good times... Good times.
@DavidBryantsTranscendent
@DavidBryantsTranscendent 2 жыл бұрын
The most painful part of all that... Is I'm a mechanic. So all of that is well within my wheel house. I could have gotten that all done in 2 hour's or less by myself if I was an owner operator. Which would have cost me money... But some how I feel like the lack of responsibility in that department as a company driver is an extremely over priced accounting issue at Western. That would be a really interesting comparison. Owner operator overhead vs miles and pay lost as a company driver. I have all my BOL's and pay stubs if you're ever bored enough. 🤣
