Wow, such attention to the general atmosphere and those important little details. Well done!

No ‘half measures’ about this design: big wide box, big boiler, plenty for the cylinders. Properly brutal and yet handsome too. Love it!

Thanks for the comment. The 12AR is considered a mainline locomotive despite its rather squat stature.

Greetings Stephen My heart swells with pride every time I see these locomotives However I am a fan of hand firing (coal) not oil burners as that kept us fit

@@WayneSA85 That locomotive had plenty of muscle and was a pleasure to fire Greetings to you

@@sydneymartin6941 Since visiting the playground next to the loco shed when I was three years old, I’ve always really liked the smell of coal fired steam locos - I think with fires banked up. Best smelling coal smoke was from Point of Air colliery cal mined in Flintshire (very gassy and made egg sandwiches taste amazing). They dug it out miles out under the sea.

Wayne, your footage is superb! I think you have a real eye for filming steam and I hope you NEVER give that up! Love all your SAR steam footage. Thanks mate for sharing!

Diesel locos might be easier and cheaper to maintain, but nothing compares with the romanticism and awe inspired by these beautiful steam locos.

Diesels cost more in ‘Foreign Exchange’.

as always excellent footage, you don't perhaps have a way of finding out what happened to some of the locos from germiston depot, looking for pictures of an engin called PAUL that we refurbished while i was there in 79

Hi Douglas, I can try and find out... Do have any other information? Was it not perhaps Pauline? 3407?
