I recently moved from the Midwest to the Houston area. I have used your videos to change my lawn from a newly very rough sodden yard of last season to a yard that makes a golf courses jealous. I still have some channeling area, but by next year it will be perfect. I bought an older model GK and mowed my lawn to a height of 5/8". It broke on me again for the last time and my local garden equipment dealer had a New G series. I was able to cut my lawn to 3/4" at setting B1. According to the manual setting A3 will be 5/8" and at setting A1 it should be 1/4". Looks like the roller on the GR series adds 1/2". I have ordered a roller from Reel Rollers, It will be interesting to see what happens when I add the roller next week.

How often do you recommend a backlap? Every mow, every other, every 5, every month??

Would like to know where you got the drill attachment for backslapping, I couldn’t find the link

Doc, mine is 35 years old now. I had Mclean authorized sharpening twice (the right way) and have backlaped a couple times. Where do you purchase your compound as I have been using valve grinding/lapping compound and it is not sold in big containers you can put a brush in like yours. Could use some help. Thanks

Thoughts on mid-summer preemergent application? Got weeds starting to show up.

Curious as well, have a few dead patches that I'd like to put something on to prevent weeds while the bermuda thickens up

Most say not to do in the heat... but a light coat will not hurt the lawn too bad.

Great information for my sister-in-law in Georgia. Would this be a good choice for me in CT. I have KBG. Looks like a great machine.

Hey Doc, how about an update on that fence stain? It’s looking a little faded. I was gonna go with your recommendation but don’t want to stain every year. Any info would be appreciated.

do you collect the grass or mulch as you use Cylinder/Reel Mowers

I use regular 8.5" x11" copy paper and cut it into 1" strips. The paper is much thinner than a Business Card and it cuts like butter.

Doc, just purchased a used reel mower. Does the reel have to be touching the bed knife?
@HowTowithDoc3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the mower. Some like a free spin others like a SMALL contact. Use a business card to test the cut.

Just bought the 25” GR series. What height should new sod be kept at?

1.5" is good the first year. Then you can start playing next year.

Better to use higher grit. The smoother the surface the longer the sharpness will last. Using coarse grits to create the serrations as you call them are actually more like burrs or a wire edge that will shear off probably in the first use whereas a smooth edge isnt hairy as I like to say and will also cut cleaner as it's on the same plane on a microscopic level
