Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, also called The Mad Messiah,[1] is a 1980 television miniseries about the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones, and their 1978 mass suicide at Jonestown. Based on the book by Charles A. Krause, entitled Guyana Massacre: The Eyewitness Account, the film was originally shown on television on April 15, 1980.
This dramatic feature traces the story of Jim Jones and the People's Temple from its roots in Indianapolis in 1953 to the November 16, 1978 tragic mass suicide of more than 900 people in Jonestown, Guyana.
Sparked by rumors from renegade members, Congressman Leo Ryan goes to Jonestown to investigate reports of bad conditions and members being held against their will. With him are members of the press and a few relatives of Jonestown residents. Ryan's visit only increases Jones' paranoia, and only one of his blindly devoted followers ambushes Ryan's party at the airstrip as they are preparing lo leave.
Jones, who knows his movement has reached the end, congregates his people (many of them unwilling) for mass suicide.

It's hard to believe that such a good movie with such a great cast was made only for television. (It's even harder to believe that no "official" home-video of this movie is available.)

The movie, while magnificent and Boothe was Great left a lot of stuff out(and it was still 3 hours). It would've been interesting for them to have had shown the the assassination attempt on Ryan back at the pavillon that occurred before the actual killing of ryan.

I was 11 during Jim Jones, so I don't remember it, but I lived in Dallas when David Koresh killed 76 people on April 19, 1993. In Matthew 24 when The 12 Apostle ask Jesus about the Signs of the Last Days before His return, the very first thing Jesus said was: Do Not be Deceived. So cool this was posted. I remember seeing it on TV, back in the day, when I was a kid. This event had an impact on me, I was born in 1967, the type of boy who read Time magazine, and growing up 'cults' were everywhere, from the Manson family to Patty Hearst, charismatic leaders using mind control a constant theme. My grandmother told me about Jim Jones as a kid. When she raised us, she didn’t like us going to church except for when I go with my grandparents. She never took us to church because one of our family members used to be a part of peoples temple and that was my great great grandma. I’m so glad one of our relatives told her please don’t go to Guyana. I remember a similar situation as an adult at church. It was communion day and we had not one but two pastors because we lost our church. So the pastor who was pastoring told us to take our communion to our seats. My pastor at the time says no no no. I want all of y’all to stand right in front of me I don’t want no Jim Jones situation.

This is just about the greatest and most chilling made-for-tv movies ever made. It needs to be restored. I remember when Jonestown happened. It was at Thanksgiving 1978. My temporary job wouldn’t let me take off the day before Thanksgiving so I could make the 3-hour trip home from DC to South Jersey. So me and a friend made the drive Thanksgiving day. We got to the Delaware bridge just at twilight. The sun was setting and there were red and grey, dark and light gray, streaks of clouds low in the sky. Then, near the bridge, a bizarre and unexpected sight. Things that reminded me of jacks, you know, from the old game, balls and jacks, huge jacks flying up in the sky, getting lower and lower, bigger and bigger These were the first military cargo planes coming in from Jonestown. They were landing at Dover AFB. We instantly knew what they were and said, “Oh no, how depressing,” for we were depressed anyway, there was a recession and jobs were hard to find and all the news was bad news in those days. Jim Jones’ body was on one of those planes. The specter of Jonestown is with us today, every day. Jonestown foreshadowed our times more than 40 years later. Who or what else today is saying, “Come to the pavilion my children.” Who or what else is telling people to go along with dark advice that is, to say the least, not in their best interest? Who is drinking the Kool Aid now? Who is going to die, bodily or in spirit, for going along with cult deeds and thoughts? I think we all know the answer. And knowing it, we’ve got to take action to stop it.

Am 30 years old and it's my first time hearing about this! Thanks alot. In Uganda where am from, someone called Kibwetere who was a cult leader of some christian-like group in South Western Uganda convinced his followers to sell all their property and prepare for the end of the world and ascension to heaven at the beginning of the new millenium/21st century. He later called everyone into the church, locked themselves in and they set the building ablaze burning themselves to death. Whether he was in the building or out when it burned down is not really known. But prior to this climax of the church fire, many followers were already being killed and dumped into a ditch at one of the locations of the church's former premises. It is said that the massacre could have been influenced by the fact that the world did not end at the 1999/2000 new year transition as had been expected, but it is also said that Kibwetere may have feared that with the end of the world and ascension to heaven not materialising, he could have feared that he would have to be answerable and compensate the followers who had sold off, destroyed or given away their property and assets. This second reason could perhaps have given Kibwetere motive to kill his followers but himself flee. However, if it was the first reason, and if all these people really believed that the world was to end, then there's a chance that Kibwetere might have also died with them in the furnace while adhering to his and their beliefs of the actual impending ennd of the world. I recall seeing the aerial footage of thousands of people lying dead in the jungle. I was ten years old, and couldn't wrap my head around the situation. Later that day, I was in a Montgomery Ward store, and they had a hundred TVs on display, all of them tuned to the news. An entire wall of televisions showing acre upon acres of death. On the surface the things Jim Jones said at the beginning about equality are great, but when he picked members of the church to be hall monitors he only picked white members. You can see this at 1:02. Maybe originally he believed in equality in some way, but he mostly preyed on people who were poor and disenfranchised and desperate and promised them power when they had none. All it got them was death or fear. I feel bad for the members, I think they weren't crazy cultist but really people who wanted to make the world a better place. Who I blame is Jim and his closest allies in Jonestown.

I was only a year old when the Guyana Tragedy occurred. I heard that it was really big news when it happened. I remember in high school, I came across this movie on a late Saturday night either on TNT or TBS. I watched it, and it made me feel so uneasy. How one man had that much power over almost a thousand people and also cost most of them their lives. Watching it, I felt like when Jones started preaching, he had the best of intentions. But greed and egotism consumed him. And then he loved the power he had over his followers. He went from serving God to then believing he was God. Then he thought himself to be bigger than God. It shows what can happen when Satan can gain control over somebody like Jim Jones and use that person for pure evil. A part of me wishes I never saw this movie. However, it did a great job with the chronicles of his early life, his rise to power and fame, and his eventual downfall. And the actors did a great job in the movie. Especially the late Powers Boothe. He made you believe that HE WAS Jim Jones.

In his childhood other children were forbidden from having anything whatsoever to do with him due to his parents refusal to do anything about his persistently deranged, perverted and downright dangerous behaviour. The scenes in this film depicting Jones's early childhood are only based on 2 sources: peer testimony, and Jim Jones's own personal anecdotes. A lot of artistic liberty was taken here, but the one commonality that seems to be agreed upon by general consensus is that, at least according to the neighbourhood children who grew up with Jones, he was an eccentric, bossy and peculiar child who was often not allowed to play with the other children, and he was fascinated with the aesthetics of religion. He would regularly find domestic pets and wild animals (some sources say they were naturally dead, other sources say he would kill these animals himself) and he would stage flowery mock-funerals for them. At best he was a very strange person from childhood; some people believe that he had a personality disorder stemming from abuse that he may have endured when he was younger but because he's long-dead we are never going to know.

I had just joined the Navy in 1977. I met this one girl in my boot camp who always talked about Jim Jones... she said she had left her 3 children with her mom, who was in Jonestown... then in 1978 she and I were in San Diego in training class... she was called out of class... a few minutes later, we heard this screaming... I ran out of the class to her... she had just learned her mom and her 3 children were dead... the base clinic sent a corpman and a doctor with an ambulance to take her to the hospital. I stayed in contact with her for a couple of years. But then I heard she had taken her life... when I hear about Jonestown or Jim Jones I see the photo she showed me. It was her, her mom and her 3 children. The photo was taken in Jonestown...😢

I was 11 during Jim Jones, so I don't remember it, but I lived in Dallas when David Koresh killed 76 people on April 19, 1993. In Matthew 24 when The 12 Apostle ask Jesus about the Signs of the Last Days before His return, the very first thing Jesus said was: Do Not be Deceived. Now in 2023 The Evil World powers have an even more Demonic plan to kill every single person on the planet. The Book of Revelation is unfolding right before our eyes, and yet people don't even see it!! So people will be willingly take The Mark of The Beast in their right hand or their forehead simply so that they can buy & sell to live; not knowing that they are condemning their soul to Hell forever. Since 2015 to now, 1,000s of Biblical prophecies have been happening faster and faster every day like birth pangs in a pregnant women. John 14:6 Jesus is The Way, The Truth, The Life and nobody comes to the Father except through Him. ~My story: 2 of my sisters were murdered and then 3 of my siblings committed suicide. So after I had been in Church for over 50 years, I almost committed suicide just 6 years ago (this week exactly) in the summer of 2017. I've been strongly encouraging people to Simply "Push Play" and let The ONLY Truth set them free too, but so far Not even 1 person has made time to Listen to The Bible. ~ Matt - John = 10 Hours ~ Acts - Gal = 6 Hours ~ Eph - Rev = 5 Hours ~As a teenager I ran away and was kidnapped for sex trafficking the same day, so my life before and after had always been extremely dysfunctional. For Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to Destruction (Hell), and many enter through it. 14.But small is the gate and Narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. So when the majority of people are doing Anything, you know it's a Deception from Satan. It may seem like the world is not falling apart, but it's falling perfectly into place. Satan already fooled Billions of people in 2020-2022 to believe the Lie despite the hundreds of red flag warning signs. COVID was literally Prophesied around 1,000 BC, in the Book of Psalms by King David. They were indoctrinated by their Pastor, their family, their schools, their doctors, their Government, famous entertainers, etc... BILLIONS more are going to be prematurely murdered, because Billions of people in The Church Won't Read/Listen & Obey their Bible, because they would rather believe their Pastor!! Most churches in our day and age, are mini Cults that say you don't have to Repent from sin. The next major "Prophecied" event to be enforced is The One World Ditital Currency: 666 The Mark of the Beast. I've heard this was very good, and i've been researching jonestown and heaven's gate recently. Glad to find this here, i can watch it. I wish ppl would've saw past the time jones told them to drink wine then said they're poisoned. Then saying they weren't. I'd be pissed. I wish they had been like 'ok...this makes me uneasy i gotta get away from here' aswell as him asking would they be willing to die. But of course they COULDN'T leave. Then ppl that didn't wanna die got injected. Just sad. May he rot.

Back in Indiana when he established what would have ultimately become The People's Temple, he was doing something that was unheard of by opening an inclusive church which was frowned upon and he persisted with it in spite of society's largely disapproving attitude. African Americans had a place to go for their faith where no judgement would be applied. His intentions to begin were very noble and historical but something later went wrong. Very wrong. So it's no surprise that his African American members of his congregation became so loyal as well as others who later joined followed him into the People's Temple that ultimately became a cult and gave up everything they had to join. Unfortunately it was much too late by the time they realised it wasn't quite the utopia they had been promised.
