Plenty of people had that inspiration. Music evolves from other music. He definitely wasnt an inventor of rock and roll. It was a variety of things, no single person. R&B singers. Boogie woogie pianists, blues guitarists, ragtime pianists and orchestras, etc all led to the creation of rock and roll and doo wop in the 1950s. And it was not one sole color of person either. It was everybody. That's what is beautiful about music

My Dad passed away in 1991 at 82 years young. I'm 71 now already. And I still remember him raving to me many times reminiscing about how much he loved dancing to Duke Ellington, the Dorsey Brothers, Count Basie, and especially Cab Calloway at the original Palais Royale in Toronto, Canada in the 1930s before he got married.. Great stuff.

I was born in 1991! 😃 And I love Cab! I remember I saw him for the first time when I was a kid in the movie "Blues Brothers". I had no idea who he was, and I remember I thought: "Wow, this old man has a great voice and dances like a young one! What an incredible energy! " Lol. I'm envying my great-grandparents for having lived these years of beautiful music! I'd like to live in America just for it! Thanks for having shared your story, sir! Hugs from Italy!

This is one extremely good transfer from film to video to digital quality music clip now a music video, an excellent and historical foundation into to the swing music that became popular during WWII, and eventually gave US Rock and Roll. More important is the fact modern music was created by Black Americans and this 1935 music clip is the best example of a history fact.

I think it's universally accepted the influence we have had on the music industry. It didn't end at rock and roll either. Rap has gone on to inspire the last 40+ years of the music industry. You can look to every genre of music and almost every time you will see a black person at the highest peak. Whether it was Cab Calloway or Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Prince, Rick James, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr, 2Pac, Hendrix. They are all pioneers who would leave their mark on music forever and are all considered the best in their respected genres.

Now look closely and you'll see an uncredited young and gorgeous Lena Horne towards the end at the Cotton Club who herself would became an American legend and black icon in the second half of the 20th Century. Well if you went back not too long before Cabs time Harlem was not black it was white.. like many other neighborhood's in every city.. my grandmother lived in Harlem for 39 years.saw it go from white to black. Just the way it goes everything changes.. it really shouldn't matter but apparently it does.. my only beef with things changing these days has nothing to do with someone's race but more to do with economics like paying rent.. becomes to expensive to live in these places unfortunately.. which of course is the downside of gentrification.. but who knows the future .. but I hear what you're saying it sure would have been great to see all of these great jazz Legends walking around the block..

The same thing with the Blues and the same thing with Lindy Hop, gentrification. It's kind of our fault though. We left the music. And if other communities are into it more than we are then what can you do.. if the young black kids are not into that kind of stuff, they exclusively like hip hop there's not much you can really do other people are going to like it and they are going to dive into that culture and that's what they're doing. But I feel the same way you feel when I look at Lindy Hop competitions all over KZbin we're not it. It's our culture dance but we're not doing it... But Harlem is gone, Harlem is gone and there's nothing we can really do about it.

Cabell Calloway. A cool cat, from way back, who was hep, before it was hip.😄 Check out his autobiography published in 1976, Of Minnie the Moocher and Me. It's full of black history in the entertainment world and that era of the 1930s and 40s. A good read. 👍

5:56 - I recently bought myself a suit like that; an original 1930s, complete with Rolled brim jazz fedora hat. Sometimes I'll go out to a nice part of London, wearing it. Yes, people steer as if I'm odd, but I really don't care. I love the fashion of that era. I might go to Ronnie Scott's in it.

So agree with you.. this was us at our greatest. We made fantastic music back then we were so talented. I have no idea what happened today. I mean, we created jazz. And I have absolutely no idea what happened to us.. I do know that white people are more interested in this particular kind of black American music then the younger black generation today.. I mean, if you go on KZbin and look at Lindy Hop competitions, All you'll see are white people. And I'm talking about internationally. France, sweden, finland, the uk, all over the place. They're doing all of these great black American classic jazz dances, Meanwhile, young black people. We don't care, it's very sad.

Although the film bills itself as taking place in the Cotton Club, the streets of Harlem and an apartment up in Sugar Hill, everything was most likely shot on a soundstage in New York and all the people you see are extras, hired to play white hoi poloi "slummin" uptown or the black girlfriends and fans of the musicians. No one did anything without a cue from the director because they didn't want anything to happen that might take the audience's attention from the man attraction: Cab Calloway and his swinging orchestra. So, everybody just sat still, stood still, smiled and watched.

What a legend. I had the honour of seeing Cab play at the Barbican Theatre in London in the mid / late 1980's. He was an old guy of course, but when he played Minnie the Moocher, man, it nearly brought the house down! God bless you Cab. You made a young guy, and a lot of others really jump and jive that night!
