Hey Asia and BJ, Keyser Soze DID exist. He was Verbal. The clue to his identity can be found in his name. Keyser is the German word for King and Soze is Turkish for "one who talks too much"-Verbal. So, Verbal Kint. He was Soze all along. The entire story was made up plucked from items on the bulletin board. This is a literary device known as the unreliable narrator. FIght Club used the same narrative technique. Anyway, glad you guys enjoyed the movie.

Since the narrator is unreliable, all we really know for sure is that the police were historically aware of the concept of Keyser Soze, and that Arturo Marquez was willing to give him up in exchange for staying out of prison. It's possible Soze actually exists and has spent years mythologizing himself, and equally plausible that he really WAS a myth that the character played by Spacey simply co-opted and used for his benefit. He in turn could have been a powerful criminal who played games with identities and anonymity, or yet another skilled middleman for someone else.

No one got away with $91 million, because, as Keaton and Kujan said, there was no money or drugs on the ship. Söze used Keaton, Hockney and McManus to clear out the other thugs on the ship and the dock so he could get to and kill the witness, Marquez. And Söze was real. Verbal Kint was just a front so that Söze could both interact with people he needed to while at the same time maintaining the illusion of Söze as a spook story. He just made up the backstory and the names from the bulletin board so that there would be no leads for Kujan to follow once he left.

Verbal Kint is Keyser Soze. Keyser is real, Verbal is not. The other guys in the group were just insignificant low-lifes. They were nothing but stooges to help Soze get on that boat to kill the informant. Soze personally went on the boat to kill everyone not Kobayashi. Soze had to see everything to its final end. He would want the informant on the boat to see him face to face when he killed him. Kobayashi was Soze’s lawyer; his right-hand man. I think that Keaton’s involvement was nothing more than to lend a sense of authenticity to the operation. Keaton was just in the dark as the rest of the gang. Since he was an ex-cop his involvement drew the attention of the real cops. Verbal wanted them to believe that Keaton was Soze. It was all a game to Soze. Kevin Spacey won an Academy Award for his performance.

@Serai3
@Serai3 3 ай бұрын
The story isn't made up; it's Keyser's taking what really happened and embroidering around it in a desperate attempt to get the hell out of the police station before he's found out. That's why he yells F**K when Cuyon asks who Keyser Soze is. He had the whole thing worked out and then somebody had to mess up his story, so now he has to come up with a whole bunch of other bullschiesse. Every time Cuyon comes back in with more info, Keyser has to re-write the rest of the story. Spacey's performance is so layered and masterful here. There's that moment when Cuyon is bragging that he's smarter than Verbal and he's going to find out what he wants to know - if you look closely, you can see Keyser's eyes twinkling and his lips twitching as he tries hard not to bust out laughing.
@spornge
@spornge 3 ай бұрын
I have a different take, if I were trying to sale some one a lie, and they dropped what they thought was surpise information, I would also lean into that. It is hard to lie convicgly to some one, it is much easier if you can get them to convince themselves . It is what theater depends on , you wanting to go along with the story, I think it can be seen as Kent reacting the way the Cop wants him to react and he does it so the cops more convinced.
@Serai3
@Serai3 3 ай бұрын
@@spornge That's the same thing I said, dude. Keyser was taking the new info and using it to keep his story going. That's why, near the end, you see him rubbing his head and thinking really hard, and when Cuyon presses him, he starts going "wait, wait". Because the story's gotten so messed up, he has to try hard to make it work. He's trying not to fuck up and say something too obviously weird that would tip Cuyon off. Luckily, it's at that point that Cuyon drops his little bomb about Keyser being Keaton. That lets Keyser off the hook and he jumps at the chance to agree with him and get out of there. Cuyon's very arrogance ends up letting the villain escape.

If you watch this again, the scene of Verbal waiting in the interview room reads differently, even though you know it's the same footage. First time you see it, he just looks bored, second time it's like he is scanning the board to pick up the details he is going to spin EDIT: Two scenes in this were made by the editor. The line up scene when the cast were cracking up was a nightmare for the director, but John Ottman pulled the rushes together and made it look like they were just showing contempt for the cops. The other scene is the reveal at the end, it was his editing that really made the scene fly

He went to jail and had a record as a con man. He made sure that Keaton knew of him, to gain trust with the other three as 'Verbal'. He is going to have to retire the Verbal name now. Now I wonder what the true story was on Keaton. Was he really trying to turn his life around, as in the story Verbal spun, and just got caught up in this Söze caper? We will never know.

But Kevin Spacey was the only other one to know the truth. This movie was directed by Bryan Singer. Years later, both he and Kevin Spacey were accused of sexual assault by multiple people. So, in a sense, this role was prophetic for Kevin Spacey, he became a real life Keyser Soze because he was seen as a nice guy actor who was later revealed to be a sleazeball creep. So, it was ironic that Singer cast Spacey in the movie and given the twist ending, it's a reflection of Spacey's own real life.

Really great reaction y'all, so good to see you as always... but I gotta give a little bit of constructive criticism if I may: I'm not really digging this whole "meme" kinda editing style, talking about the beginning of the video. It just gives off weird "mainstream slop" vibes to me, idk... almost feels like literally _everyone_ wants to be like that nowadays, and I don't think it's a very good trend. This is a movie reaction, not a comedy shtick. I much prefer your previous, more relaxed and non-distracting style. But of course - that might as well just be me. Just wanted to give you my honest opinion, is all.

I clicked right away when I saw you guys post this reaction. This was a smart, great criminal caper, and I see you've already read the comments, Verbal was Kaiser, so awesome! So going back to the end of the comedy "Scary Movie", they did a spoof on the end of Usual Suspects. P.S. I recommend "Blown Away" with Jeff Bridges & Tommy Lee Jones, its action packed and great suspence also (not exactly a criminal caper but I think just as tense and exciting)

Another great crime film you guys should check out is LA Confidential. It also has Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, and Danny Devito. It contains another classic line from Kevin Spacey. But yeah, Kaiser Soze was made up.

"Unreliable narrator" is the name of the literary device used here. Nothing Verbal said can be trusted. It's possible to feel quite cheated when writers do this, but in this case the movie is just so damned good that it is only positive for our experience.

It also works because the writer tells you from the beginning not to trust the narrator , he tells us he is a con man. We decide to trust him, just like any mark. So you are not upset at the writer , you are upset at yourself. The script is pretty flawless.

The phrase "The Usual Suspects" comes from the timeless movie "Casablanca" from 1942.

I love this movie, the point is, we don't know the real story. We only know what Verbal told Kulian, which was made up on the spot in the office with what was visually around him... Trippy, but the trip to California, did not happen. What did? The whole time, he was f***ing with Kulian and us...

Benecio Del Toro put on the heavily affected accent because he realised nothing that FInster had to say actually mattered, so instead he decided to make the character memorable

I rented this movie instead of watching it in the movies; after my mind was blown, I handed the movie to my brother in law and said “watch this”. He asked me what it was about, then I said “watch this”. That all I could say. He watched it and it became his favorite movie!

Hockney robbed the truck in queens. Kobayashi revealed that. and he went to sleep in the holding tank. There was Money in the van but Soze wasnt worried about that as much as he wanted the guy who could identify him dead

And what about Benicio del Toro, you guys? He was fantastic in this movie, too. This is one of his first early movie roles after he left modeling (he was an underwear model for Calvin Klein back in the day). I think you guys have seen him in Sicario. He won the 1996 Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. Kevin Spacey won the 1996 Acadamy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He is such a great actor and it's very unfortunate that he is a sexual predator. Enough said on that subject. The movie itself won the 1996 Oscar for original screenplay. This is one of my favorite movies. Now you have to watch L.A. Confidential, another crime drama movie from the same time in the '90s with Russell Crowe, Guy Pierce, Kim Basinger and Kevin Spacey. You're going to really enjoy that one, too!
