The underlying mood of Haydn's "7 Last Words" is one of profound personal tragedy. It is the suffering of man with and for the ''Son of Man.'' l. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do - St. Luke 23:34, (largo) Jesus imitated His Father's love perfectly by being "ready to forgive. (Psalm 86:5.) Did he ask his Father to punish his tormentors when he was subjected to an infamous death, with his hands and feet pierced with nails? On the contrary, we note in his last words: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. II. Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in Paradise. - St. Luke 23:43, (grave e cantabile) This promise is different from the one he made to the apostles, that they would sit with him on thrones in the kingdom (Matthew 19:28; Luke 22:29, 30). This man, a Jew, may have heard of the earthly paradise where God had planned for Adam and Eve and their descendants to live. Now he can die with that hope set before him. (Apocalypse 21:3,4) III. Woman, behold your son, and you, behold your mother! - St. John 19:26, 27, (serious) Jesus thus entrusts his mother, apparently already a widow, to the apostle whom he particularly loves. He knows that his half-brothers, the other sons of Mary, do not yet have faith in him (Matthew 12:46-50; John 7:5). So he looks after both his mother's physical and spiritual needs. IV. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? - St. Matthew 27:46, (largo) When he cried out to his heavenly Father acknowledging him as his God, Jesus fulfilled Ps 22:1. Jesus' heart-rending cry may have reminded those who heard him of the many things that were prophesied about him in the rest of Ps 22: he would be mocked and derided, his hands and feet would be attacked, and his garments would be divided by lot (Ps 22:6-8, 16, 18). The chapter ends with a tribute to Jehovah, the God of Jews and Christians: ''For the kingdom belongs to Jehovah; he rules over the nations.'' V. I am thirsty. - St. John 19:28, (adagio) This word also fulfills a messianic prophecy contained in Psalm 22:15 'My strength has dried up like a piece of pottery; My tongue sticks to my gums; (...). It has been accomplished! - St. John 19:30, (lento) Indeed, he accomplished all that his Father asked him to do on earth: preach the Kingdom of God, teach the truth about the Father, heal the sick, feed the crowds, cast out demons, raise the dead, and offer his life as a sacrifice to save humanity from sin and death. Marvelous work ! Personally I think this vocal-choral arrangement of the piece is the most convincing. Voices add color and contrast and present a richer musical experience. Bravo Haydn ! Most befitting music for the upcoming Easter celebrations.

I agree with you. I recently saw an orchestra-only performance and despite being a big Haydn fan, I found listening to eight slow consecutive pieces quite difficult. Adding the contrast and colour you talk about is very welcome. The piece was commissioned as I understand it to provide musical interludes in a day long event of devotion, prayer and sermons and adapting it as a single concert piece of nine movements (which Haydn himself did) posed obvious problems. I confess to nodding off once or twice at my concert and sometimes feeling that I had heard this sequence before. This arrangement will help me to appreciate this great work better.

@@dabedwards You make some good points, and you’re right that stripped of the original context - a sequence of slow movements interspersed with readings and played in a darkened candlelit crypt - it can be challenging. Musically, Haydn has done all a composer could to vary the introduction and seven adagios, both in orchestration, and in tonality which is in fact the most daring and widely ranging sequence in a single work before late-Beethoven: Introduction - Maestoso ed Adagio, *d minor* Sonata 1 - Largo, *B flat major* Sonata 2 - Grave e cantabile, *c minor/C major* Sonata 3 - Grave, *E major* Sonata 4 - Largo, *f minor* Sonata 5 - Adagio, *A major* Sonata 6 - Lento, *g minor/G major* Sonata 7 - Largo, *E flat major* Il terremoto - Presto e con tutta la forza, *c minor.* Stick with the orchestral version* of the Seven Words; perhaps quite astonishingly Wagner was a fan: Cosima Wagner** noted in her diary, ‘During these days R [Richard Wagner] spoke of them with the greatest admiration and said they were deeply moving’. It’s worth remembering too that the whole work is purely instrumental in conception and therefore lacks what you might call a Mozartian cantabile lyricism (a Mozart Seven Words would have been the polar opposite to Haydn’s), it is instead a different Haydnesque form of melody. * The choral version is also magnificent - the string quartet and piano arrangements are not. ** Daughter of Liszt, and Wagner’s second wife.

Excelente grabación de Las siete últimas palabas de Cristo compuesta por Joseph Haydn, la acabo de escuchar en viernes santo y se oye tremenda la calidad del sonido y la instrumentación, una obra con una de las mejores instrumentaciones compuestas por Haydn, el interludio con los vientos me parece relajante y la parte del Terremoto no es de esperarse, es brutal y el pasaje más épico de la obra, es una obra casi romántica (pensar que Haydn ya conocía al joven Beethoven durante este tiempo), la historia de cómo se hizo el oratorio también es interesante por que hay 3 versiones, esta, una para cuarteto de cuerda y otra para piano, arregladas por Haydn, estupuendo director Hermann Scherchen, la orquesta, el coro y los solistas en buena forma. FELIZ SEMANA SANTA.

Wunderschöne und tiefempfundene Interpretation dieses großartigen und perfekt komponierten Vokalwerks mit herrlichen Stimmen der fünf genialen Solisten und gut harmonisierten Stimmen des ausgezeichneten Chors sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente. Der intelligente und erfahrene Dirigent leitet das perfekt trainierte Orchester im gut betrachteten Tempo und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Die verbesserte Tonqualität ist auch ziemlich hoch als eine Originalaufnahme von sechzig Jahren vor. Alles ist wunderbar!

Listening to this, I’m so glad I’m not the kind of musical snob who will only listen to artists who are the most celebrated, as I see in many comments sections affixed to just about every type of classical music you can think of. I’ve never heard of any of the soloists, or the conductor, but I was happy to hear what they had to offer, such beautiful, emotive singing....as happens so often, I was so moved by the performance that I’ll be listening again and again, and not just on Good Friday.

Really struggling to understand why someone should bring up the utterly irrelevant and lazy old platitude and cliche relating to humour in Haydn when discussing this particular intensely profound work. Are we supposed to be laughing - the purpose of humour - on thoughts surrounding the last words of Jesus dying on the cross ? Absurdity and ignorance in equal measure.
