Liszt - Six Consolations S.172, Consolation No.3, St.François .. Nr. 01-08 is the famous "Eight Great Suites" published 1720 HWV 426-433. In 1733, another set was published from HWV 434 (where you'll find the theme Brahms used to elaborate his Händel-Variationen, Op. 24 in Air con variazioni, and the elegent, sentimental Menuetto probably made famous by Kempff's transcription) to HWV 442. Sadly 434, 435 and 442 (two Chaconnes based on the same theme, as same as Bach's Goldberg-Variationen, HWV 435 & 442) are not included here. Nr. 09 HWV 439 g-moll (Set 1733 Nr. 6) Nr. 10 HWV 436 d-moll (Set 1733 Nr. 3) Nr. 11 HWV 437 d-moll (Set 1733 Nr. 4) Nr. 12 HWV 438 e-moll (Set 1733 Nr. 5) Nr. 13 HWV 440 B-Dur (Set 1733 Nr. 7) Nr. 14 HWV 441 G-Dur (Set 1733 Nr. 8) Nr. 15 HWV 447 d-moll Nr. 16 HWV 452 g-moll Also several late suites, i.e. HWV 443-445, 448-450, 453 are outliers as well. If you want to count more completely, William Babell's four lessons on Handel's improvisation playing from opera pit could be included. Handel's keyboard suites are very much underrated and marginalized. I wish more pianists could pay attention to this treasure where Beethoven absorded the full nutrition of it, you might find the trace of which in the 4th mov of his Eroica symphony and the Arioso of Op. 111.

Mr. Heidsieck plays these wonderful gems with the "singing style" that was so much prized by composers of that era. His touch is by turns limpid, brilliant, sombre, and joyful as the case demands. This is one of the best recordings of the Handel suites that I've ever heard, and I am very glad that they are available here on You Tube "music lovers to refresh their spirits".

Handel was the first great classic composer I loved as a young man. Now I am over 73 and still Handel (like Bach and the Beethoven piano sonatas) keeps surprising me. Beethoven admired Handel very much and I understand now perhaps why...Eric Heidsieck will become my favorite interpretation of this great collection, together with Richter, though I play Heidsiecks Handel more now....

Peter, I could sign my name to almost every detail of what you say! I too fell in love with Handel's music at age 10, though I somehow picked up a (mystifying and ultimately unjustifiable) patronizing disdain, slight but unmistakable, for Handel's music among certain cognoscenti. The knock on him, as I perceived it, was that his music was too programmatic, too "pop" if you will--the Water Music, above all--and presumably lacking Bach's profundity and/or complexity. I remember the feeling of gratitude and vindication on learning of Beethoven's reverence for Handel as "the master of us all." GFH has continued to surprise me and bring me joy my whole life; I began to transcribe some of the Water Music suite for piano, then came upon some pretty good transcriptions and have been learning it. I too admire Richter's Handel above all, and I too am stunned by Heidsieck's which I've just discovered. I now listen to both Richter and Heidsieck, chiefly, for Handel's keyboard suites. Gerard Aimontche, a young Russian pianist, does a wonderful job with No. 5 (Blacksmith), and I enjoy Alicia de Larrocha's interpretation too. But for me now, it's SR & EH that most engage me. These suites are a cornucopia.

I've admired Haendel since I was a little boy, and once in a while I play through one or two of these magnificent suites on my piano which is really satisfying, musically as well as technically, since Haendel's writing is simply excellent. Eric Heidsieck is an amazing pianist who is still active in the musical scene and who looks decades younger than he actually is! He is probably my favorite Haendel player if I had to pick one.

I wholeheartedly agree with a comment made a year or so ago, and yet another made only last month. This is indeed Handel performed with sensitivity and great subtlety. Eric Heidsieck, where so many other pianists have failed, bridges the gap of transcription from the instruments of the period to the modern era with seemingly effortless ease. In itself no mean feat. The new mastering accentuates the acoustic, enabling the mastery, intelligence, and pianism of Heidsieck to shine through. For me there is no better performance of this repertoire.

A long, standing ovation for Maestro Heidsieck!!! Just listened to No. 5 (HWV 430), my first time with any recording of this pianist, whom it was my loss not to know of until now (as you can see, I both flaunt and regret my ignorance). This feels something like Keats's "On First Looking Into Chapman's Homer": hearing the suite in an utterly new way. The magic and beauty of interpretation in the right hands--the partnership of a superb performer with an immortal composer--it is as if Handel has now expressed something new to us. And now, on to the wonders of No. 2 (HWV 427)!!

I was recently researching one of my relatives who was alive in the 1700s. (I am not sure if I am a descendant of him or if we have a common ancestor.) I found a document that someone wrote about him that said that he was a musician and liked playing piano and the fiddle (I play the piano), and that he loved talking about Handel. It's awesome and crazy to think that he listened to and knew about this music all those years ago in the 1700s, and now I am listening to it. And I love it too!

A lovely interpretation - sublimely pianistic - of Handel's glorious keyboard suites. As with another commentator here, I have only more recently come across these works, and I though I knew much of Handel's music, and I have the recordings by Danny Driver. I didn't think these could be improved, perhaps not, but this is certainly a match, perhaps more limpid and caressing - almost romantic, and you know, there's no need to pretence of historically informed performance when the music is as beautiful as this. These suites are among my most re-played works, this recording reminds me why. Thank you Eric Heidsieck.

it's been quite sometime lately that I heard a piano recording this good, lyrical, well thought of and good pianism. Heidsieck has such beautiful tone and unlike most pianists, including Richter and Gavrilov, he doesn't treat Haendel lightly, he treats him seriously, with each phrase well considered, coupled with his lilting tone, even though his aethetism doesn't mean to be revolutionary or to shock with novelty, each piece is treated with refreshing beauty, even the most well worn Harmonious Blacksmith is given a satisfying twist with lovely dotted left hand bass that's musically more convincing than most pianists including de Larrocha. And I am sure most listeners here would be happy to find out that in the passacaglia of the 7th suite, Heidsieck added some of his Busonian transcription stuffs that breathes new life into the work.

I was completely ignorant regarding Handel suites. Of course I knew his Messiah and sarabande and water music and fireworks. Moreover, I have no recollection of ever having heard Heidsieck before. My fault. The more one learns, the more these infinite expanses of ignorance grow around one. Not new, Socrates described this difficulty in his Apology. To no avail, I may add. Handel keyworks are a complete new world for me. The similarity to JS Bach suites and partitas is of course staggering. Seems to me that Handel was larger and more complex and sophisticated than normally thought. Perhaps his burying himself in London meant to stay outside of culturally richer Europe (i. e. , Italy, France and certainly Germany). Thanks Classical Music for unearthing and uploading this beautiful, precious music.

I came here from Richter's recording which is obviously stupendous however was too percussive for me, that "gripe" is down to the recording and instrument. As with every interpretation there are many variables. Right now am enjoying this thoroughly.

Two great musical masters, Eric Heidsieck and Paul Tortelier playing the Beethoven 'cello sonatas together. A generation ago, Janos Sebestyen at harpsichord playing Handel. Today it would likely be Skip Sempe or Jean Rondeau.

Haendel sounds even more " modern" than Bach and Mozart. Beethoven and many others seem to have incorporated much of Haendel's music. 🎉❤❤❤

My introduction to Händel was the Water Music and Fireworks suites, where he sounds really powerful and splendid, like a proper Baroque composer. This collection, however, came as a surprise to me - it sounds much more sophisticated, introverted, and modern; as if he had glimpsed the developments of the Romantic period. It seems as though this had been written by a different composer altogether, like the alchemical experiments Newton did at night, or Goethe's essays on colour theory.

Mr Heidsieck certainly brings something to this music he seems to be alone to have come to grip with. There are other fine pianists in Handel, my favorites are Gavrilov and Hewitt (only two items alas). But where most pianists play Bach and Handels suites approximately the same way Mr Heidsiecks renderings never could be mistaken to be music by Bach, a mistake I have experienced even listeners familiar with the idiom making from time to time. .

Holy smoke, am I crazy or does the Overture to Suite No. 7 almost sound like Haydn... or even Beethoven?!
@franr.36912 жыл бұрын
Yes, agree!! Well, Handel was greatly admired by both. Haydn said, "He is the master of us all." Beethoven "He is the greatest composer who ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel before his grave"

Flawless playing and musicianship. Nonetheless, Keith Jarrett's brilliant recording has to be THE recording of these magnificent suites.
