The Musical Offering is the "Art of the Canon" in two different forms: the finished canon (or closed canon) and the perpetual (or open canon). The form of the canon is born from the strictest imitation of two or more voices (since the canon can be composed for six voices and more). For the composer it is the most difficult form since it is the geometrical representation of a harmony of the same nature as that of numbers. Legendary indeed. The sheer power of a superior intellect, transporting Bach straight into the modernism of Strauss. It is not even a matter of "taste" or "interpretation" anymore: this recording is a category on its own. Simply, I don't know who else ever had the stature and the vision to conceive such a thing.

Bach is the perfect way to start a Sunday! Beautifully played and recorded rendition of this masterwork. Rather ponderous compared to what we tend to hear today, but Bach's music is sturdy enough to handle any demands placed on it!

I have always loved the many recordings that Hermann Scherchen made of the music of Bach - but must admit I have never heard this exquisite performance until now. Scherchen's readings of the 12 Handel Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 are part of my LP collection that I highly recommend to anyone who can find these mono treasures!
