@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA The MSR small canisters have an empty weight of 101g and net gas content of 110g (total weight when full 211g). Primus has similar empty weight but only 100g of gas (around 200g when full). So if you fill to 160g, you are about 60% of the original fill of the canister. I think everybody should be careful and actually know what they are doing as you said so you make your own judgements and also check the facts and numbers on your scales, do not just trust random guys (as me for example) in internet 🙂

I have seen instructions elsewhere that say the 80% rule is for a completely empty canister, In other words the manufacturers only fill to 80% when new to allow for expansion should the canister be exposed to heat in transport or storeage. It is wise not to push the limit. Your rule of 80% of original fill should certainly be safe. Best wishes.

Hej, Matti! Thank you for the great videos! This one insipres me to buy refill adapter, because it's a common traveller's problem: half-empty gas canisters, which refuses to burn in low temperatures outside. An once again, thanks for the safety instructions for refilling process. It was new information for me. But i have one interesting question: why not you using pressure lowering button on refill adapter? This button allows you not to warm up outgoing canister, and not to cool down incoming canister. I pressing this button 3 or 4 times during refill process of 230g canister and all canisters (full and empry) are the same temperatures. P.S. You need to insert disclamer at the beginning: "Please, finish drinking tea or coffe before viewing this video clip" 😀

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Yes, it exists :) I have the same gas tube "campingmoon" as yours. Pause your video at 06:22. There you can see round button. Connect two gas canisters to refill adapter and start refilling. When it stops pissing, turn off valve, then press this round button for a 5-7 seconds and you will hear that bottom canister is depressurising. Then you can open valve and continue refilling process. And if you examine refill adapter, you will notice a small hole wiсh titled "ventilation" on the one of refill adaptor's side. This hole releases pressure from "IN" gas canister while button pressed.

Yes you can vent the canister to cool it, but in that process you waste enough gas to heat a cup of water for tea.... Better to chill the canister in a freezer if you can.

Hi Matti, I have a 100g PRIMUS, I bought the small transfer system before watching this video, when I went to test it to fill it I read the small letters printed on the canister where it says: CANNOT BE RECHARGED... I'm perplexed... also when screwing the transfer on the IN side of the PRIMUS canister there seems to be some resistance... as if it wouldn't let it in... on other canisters of another brand it seems that this doesn't happen... on your 100g PRIMUS is there this resistance when screwing it in? Do your PRIMUS canisters have a sign not to recharge? Thanks for the video.

Yes… it’s written on the tube that you shouldn’t refill it. I don’t really know what you mean by ‘some resistance’… Try to change places on the tubes… Is it still resistance? Try to open the screw and see if some gas goes to the other tube. I don’t think anything bad will happen. /Matti

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA It seems that the pin on the side where IN is written is thinner than on the side where OUT is written, when I try to attach the small transfer system on the IN side to the PRIMUS canister it seems that it doesn't want to "go in" on the OUT side There are no problems screwing it in, the pin goes in smoothly...

@ Gases in heavy steel bottles have more propane, even 100%. It has much higher gas pressure than those gas mixes (butane, isobutane etc.) in light aluminium canisters. Positive side of high pressure propane is it works even in very cold. But if you refill a light canister with it it will explode when heated, for example if left in sunshine or possibly even in room temperature. So don't do it. Gases are not same and they need different containers.

I use quite hot water on the canister because that is the only way you can empty it completely, and that is what I bought this device for, emptying my half full canisters that I never take with me on a trip anyways. I always wanted to fill the smaler 100 or 110 canisters obviously to save money as the smaller canister are way more difficult to obtain in shops. so, delivery costs are also added to the purchase of smaler canisters making them so expensive and filling them is a desirable option just wish there was a safer way to do this, and less risk and work.

Incorrect. You save money by transferring butane and propane from their specialized tanks directly into the camp stove cannister. You can also pump up the propane percentage a bit to greatly enhance cold weather performance. I perform these transfers and I winter camp well below freezing and I enjoy huge money savings and much better cold weather performance.

To add to JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA - Matti & Stina comment, the 110 gram canisters are much more expensive that say a 250 gram. The smaller 110 gram are for me, easier to pack and weigh less so I prefer using those. So I use a bigger bottle to refill the smaller one, it's just less costly than buying a small new bottle.

In a lot of countries doing this is illegal. In the USA it is a felony... you can spend up to 5 years in federal prison and/or up to a 500,000$ fine if you transport a refilled canister on a highway), you need to be licensed to refill gas canisters and the canisters have to be legal to fill. Plus it is very dangerous. Those adaptors don't have a pressure gauge or bleed valve, and it is possible to over pressurize them (even if you use a scale) causing them to rupture even explode. These canisters are not designed to be reused, and just because it had say 400g of isobutane in it the first time does not mean it can support any further fillings at that amount. The metal flexes each time it goes from full to empty and will cause an unknown amount of metal fatigue, and metal fatigue is largely invisible. Also the valve can leak, as it is not designed to be more than a handful of times. It is not a question of if a refilled canister will explode, but when it will. Heck even the unrefilled ones sometimes explode too. I detest gas canisters and refuse to use them, as they are causing massive problems. People illegally throw millions of them into the garbage in campsites and parks. They are super dangerous to garbage collectors and processors, as the canisters detonate when crushed, even is supposedly empty. They are clogging up national parks as people toss them into the bush; I find them all over the place in the wilderness. Plus few places recycle them (They get treated as hazardous waste and buried in barrels). California is planning on banning them outright due to all the problems they have had with them. So I use a Trangia alcohol stove, and in the winter I use a multi-fuel stove, which I can easily refuel. My lantern is either battery or UCO candle lantern.

...seriously!?!? Prison? In Europe we always hear about US as the place of freedom. 😉 I agree... aluminium 'gets tired ' when you flex it... and also about all canisters all over the place. BUT... imagine if we had a refilling system. You buy a little bit better gastube (new system with tubes made for refulling) and then could refill it at a gas station. /Matti

I also have been using canister stoves less and less. I thill think they are the most convenient cook system, but I don't like the gas roar nor the canister themselves. My choice at the moment is the BCB firedragon fold stove plus hand sanitizer. But realistically, for longer hikes, carrying large amounts of alcohol doesn't make sense.
