Refining 9 Carat Gold costume Jewelry # Gold Hunter #

I set out to refine some 9 carat costume jewelry to a higher carat yield by melting and cupelling with lead rather than acids . Now because 9 carat is only about a 3rd of 24 carat then my initial weight should drop by about two thirds so after a few hickups with my Table top kiln i had to finish the job manually with Map gas , but still got a result i was happy with .

G'day Jason , yeah !!! i'm just tinkering , just tinkering . PT is the real deal refining man . It's all good fun though . I was going to inquart with silver and then Nitric acid , but i have to use Pottasium nitrate and Hydrochloric acid as a substitute for pure Nitric Acid , and then heat it , but of course these things are a pre cursor to high explosives , so gotta be careful . Yes John , cupelling with lead or Bismuth will reduce to some degree the unwanted base metals , oxidizing them away into the cupel , leaving the precious metals behind into a more concentrated button . It doesn't make it worth anymore than the rings were , but it consolidates it into a more palatable salable item , that's all . And a bit of fun as well , just to do it . Take care Buddy . 👍✌✌

Hey Kev , The Tabletop Kiln is so handy , but this one has been a pain in the Ass for me . It burned out 3 elements before i realised the current here is too high , so i bought the drop down transformer , and i'm still having problems with it . I don't know , seems the s/it fight never ends , lol . It's all good fun though . I just leached 20 lbs of low grade gold ore with Eco goldex and put it through some ion exchange resin to capture any gold , not sure what to do with it now , but it's supposed to be subjected to Electrolysis to recover the gold , so here goes another s/it fight challenge lol , 😂😂Anyway glad you liked the vid mate , cheers Bro . 👍

@@BiggestKev1960 Hahaha , yeah , bloopers is right . I'll try a few different ways with the stuff first before i film anything . The trouble is that the gold is in a different ionic complex state and the only way i think it can be gotten is with Electrolysis . That's how the big mines recover their gold whether your using Cyanide or Eco goldex it's the same deal . So it's all very mind boggling for this little black duck too mate . But i'll keep trying . cheers . 👍

That's the first time i used it with a drop down transformer . G'day Mandy , Haha ha , How's it going girl . Nice you could drop in and visit your Fav Uncle . Yes , well refining it's purity doesn't necessarily make it worth anymore , but it just makes it a bit more saleable for potential gold buyers . So doing it this way without the use of Acid refining , your 3 ounces would probably turn out to end up around 1 ounce of say , 18 to 22 carat button or bar which ever you preferred . G'day Mark , the Acid test told me i was right . i did a streak on the stone and used the 18 carat acid on it and the streak just barely faded a bit after a few minutes , so i'm happy with that . Wish i had an XRF to tell me exactly how much gold in it , but for now i'll settle for those results . Cheers Brother stay warm up there . 👍✌

It doesn't necessarily make it worth anymore than the rings themselves were , but by increasing it's purity i think makes it a more saleable item . If my kiln had kept working it would have been easier by ending up with the button in the cupel after all the base metals had oxidized away , but i could still do it with the Mapp gas but you must be careful not to let it start spattering and losing the gold , That's the tricky bit when you are using the gas to cupel . Yes Keith , it works well most times , but it's heat is somewhat limited , i would like to have an Oxy Acetylene torch though . My big furnace will certainly reach higher temperatures but it's just a pain in the butt to set it all up . My Table top kiln is great and so handy but it stopped working , ( maybe overload ) shut it down . It's still worked afterwards , so maybe something to do with the drop down transformer , it's the first time using it with the transformer . You'll notice Keith i configured the element in my kiln as you did , to stop that sagging happening . much better idea , thanks for that . 👍Cheers .
