Refinishing a Bathroom Vanity Top Using Epoxy || Updating My Cultured Marble Vanity

As part of my bathroom makeover, I wanted to update the old, outdated looking, cultured marble sink vanity. However, ripping out the vanity and replacing it with a new one is a big job that will create a huge mess. Not to mention, the potential to get expensive if the base cabinet or drywall gets damaged in the process. Instead, I figured I would try a different option and attempt to refinish the vanity. After gaining some experience with epoxy resin, I decided to use Stone Coat Countertops Black Marble Epoxy Kit to refinish the vanity and update it to a Black Marble finish. This process was fairly easy, it came out looking great, and was much cheaper than installing a new vanity.

Nice job. I do this professionally and I wish this process was faster. I spray a stone texture onto a base primer, then clearcoat. Takes about 1hr total for a vanity. My business could afford how time consuming your process is. Looks amazing though.

Thanks! This was my first time doing a bathroom vanity so I took my time. I definitely could have been faster but since I don't do it for a living I also don't need to be in a rush. If my end result looks good enough to get a thumbs up from someone who does it for a living then I consider that a successful project.

Your countertop is gorgeous. I've done 2 bathrooms so far with Stonecoat, and I've got 2 more bathrooms to do. After seeing this video I can't decide whether to stick with the earth tones or use your colors. Great instructions. Thank you for posting the video.

My question is can you clean your bathroom with bleach
@thediygrunt
@thediygrunt 7 ай бұрын
Yes but dilute the bleach with water and make sure you have applied the top coat to the epoxy. With top coat is a hard sacrificial layer that means you are not applying chemicals directly to the surface of the epoxy.

Wear PPE ya'll if you do this yourself. The fumes can mess you lungs up.
@thediygrunt
@thediygrunt Ай бұрын
Having using Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy about a dozen times now I can say that there is basically no fumes. In fact you probably won't even notice a smell while doing it and only notice once you leave and re-enter the room. That being said I agree with using PPE to be safe, but my lungs are likely already screwed thanks to the military so PPE at this point won't save them. I have used other types of epoxy products though that I absolutely use PPE for because of how bad the smell is, Stone Coat however is nothing like those.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just spray paint it?
@thediygrunt
@thediygrunt Ай бұрын
Instead of rolling the paint on? It would be easier for the sink bowl but I dislike spray painting inside the house. I don't want to spend the time covering up everything in the bathroom I don't want to risk getting paint on.

To fix up the mirror you can try thin mirror strip's around the edge of the mirror, like a frame. They stick on. Too easy.

Great job! I have cracks starting in my marble tub. Heard or know of anyone refinishing a tub? Thx!
@thediygrunt
@thediygrunt Жыл бұрын
I don't know anyone personally who has refinished a tub. I intend to refinish mine but they are steel so I don't have the same issues as you. I know there are products out there that you could use. Off the top of my head, 3M bondo fiberglass resin should be capable of fixing the damage you described, so that's something you could try.

Its less than you think honestly its not that bad. It just the stress that comes with doing the epoxy. I highly recommend not doing a vanity as a first epoxy project. I started with something I could throw away if it came out bad and something I could afford to make mistakes on.

Well, he said the last step was not done correctly, so he owned up to that. So the end result is not going to look like it's supposed to, far from it. So just picture the end product when he showed us the cured epoxy coat and BEFORE the "Ultimate Top Coat" stages. I can't put blame on him not showing the "Ultimate Top Coat" final result with his video camera since it didn't go well. I think the camera footage BEFORE the ultimate top coat looked fantastic and transformed his yellow cultured marble sink into something that looks like it would cost $700 to $800 dollars. This was a fantastic job of how you follow all the steps and taking all the precautions that a DIY'er should take.

I have a lot of epoxy at bottom of bowl. It is hard what to do?
@thediygrunt
@thediygrunt Жыл бұрын
The epoxy needs the ability to drain out the bottom of the sink bowl. It cannot go down your drain so the drain needs to be removed so it the epoxy can come out the hole and be caught in a bucket or even a trash bag. But if it is already hard there is nothing that can change that.

You don't have to seal it but I did apply the Ultimate Top Coat product that Stonecoat makes. I just didn't show that process because it was my first time using it and I wanted to get it down before creating a how-to video on it.

I have had no issue with the epoxy counter tops in bathroom applications. Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy is rated up 500 degrees so you will not have an issue with heat from the shower. Epoxy is also waterproof.

Looks absolutely amazing but f**k me, that is a long process.
@thediygrunt
@thediygrunt 6 ай бұрын
I have done this process I believe 6-7 times so far on various different surfaces. The process is not as bad as it initially looks, in fact is very similar to the proper prep work that goes into painting walls. Really just the additional epoxy process is the extra step over a normal paint job. Technically the top coat is optional but i strongly recommend it. The epoxy process and it is a bit stressful your first time. If you are interested in it I suggest practicing on something that is not important or can have a less than perfect result. You will make mistakes the first time but you will learn a crap ton.
