I've been working on a Mason and Hamlin upright from 1895. The striping and sanding have been much more involved than I thought they would be. I'm finally almost ready to spray the lacquer. I'll send you some pics when I finish.

Thanks for the upload, Bruce. What type of 'paint sprayer' are you using? If you can name the one you're using, it would be very helpful to your viewers.

Is that just a black stain you spray on and then put a clear lacquer top coat or is that a lacquer that is black? I am looking to refinish my great grandmother’s Boston Piano company upright.

Hi Bruce , How you don't mind a request for help. I purchased a baby Grand that was in good shape but the Cabinet was very cracked up and in Very bad shape. First thing we striped it down to the Veneer but even at that point things did not look well. Finally we decided to remove the outer layer of Veneer for so many reasons. Blisters cracks and more. The outer layer of the veneer was replaced with Maple Veneer and all went well. As it was looking really good the veneer was primed and a base coat of Black Pre cat Lacquer was applied (2 coats). Now that 4 coats of clear Pre cat Gloss was applied and complete and all looked great we opened up the garage for some fresh air and sun light. I was shocked to see ripples and bumps in the finish from the veneer. I knew at this point I made a major Boo Boo ! When I applied the vineer the under surface was not perfectly flat and now that is what is showing.. I know I am back to sanding and painting but I need advise how to level this. I would like some serious constructive advice Please. Thanks for your Videos and Thanks in advance !
@brucelach44815 жыл бұрын
its would be best to rip all the veneer off ,then bondo the shell and sand then start painting , most of the time if you take a hot iron ,and a rag, you can heat up the veneer to stick and stay down , but if you remove what you but on ,bondo and sand smooth ,that would be the best , good luck ,send me some photo,s when you get this one done ,

Hi Bruce enjoy your videos. Years ago I did refinished pianos for a friend of mind. He rebuild all the inside parts and tuning. I was just wondering what spray gun you are using. are you using a HVLP gun? The last piano I refinished was a 1876 Steinway upright that has been in a fire in an old church. That thing had 3 coats of paint over a black finish.

@@brucelach4481 Thanks!!! I have 2 of the Sears cup guns I bought back in the early 90's. I also have a couple of the DeVilbiss FinshLine HVLP guns I used when I was building cabinets. They work pretty good. I have subscribed to your channel look forward to watching more of your videos. Have you had any experience painting MDF cabinet doors? I'm remodeling my kitchen now and thinking about building my doors out of MDF.

but...there is no air suction and filtering! you have to build a painting cabin, it is like any garage diy painting work... You are risking a lot....and there is a lot of powder in the floor.
@brianelsner41755 жыл бұрын
So I guess his spray area is also his sanding area and storage area.. you can see the wheel marks on the floor as the rolls the piano around in the dust. Any dust that gets kicked up off the floor ends up in the paint. Also any one who has painted knows you stop spraying paint when you change directions with the gun... Not overly impressed with what I've seen.
