Stood at the finish line for two hours before the start of the event (having flown from Australia the day before). Stayed at the team hotel and managed to go for a run with some of the pacers the day after. Such a privilege. My arms feature several times in this video and the top of my head at one point. Almost famous.

I came from Moscow, a bit shorter, but still ;-) I enjoyed running on the track right after the event, trying to stay on the same path as Eliud, the atmosphere was so amazing!

I went out for a five mile run that I ran at about half this pace. And people look at me like I'm in good shape. But in my own mind I'm just a little weak baby because I watched this man run before I went out to run. Thank God for legends like this for motivation to let us all know that if we just stay the course of discipline anything is possible. I'm struggling right now but I pray God gives me the strength to reach my full potential too.

I thought I was the only one. I watch this race and his WRs over and over. I love the dichotomy of this magnificent athlete: so humble and unassuming on the one hand, but he pounds his chest triumphantly as he decimates another elite field crossing the finish line. And so many great athletes celebrate right along with him, which testifies to what a sweet, likeable guy he is.

the 1:59 challenge inspired me so much, i was 18 when Eliud achieved this and thats when i got into running (i was a swimmer in highschool), 2 years later and I completed my first marathon, half marathon, won my first duathlon and just got 2nd place in my age category in my first triathlon.

It was the middle of the night where I lived while I was watching this live. I decided to go to the garage where I had my bike trainer and try to complete a virtual climb of Passo Stelvio in under 2 hours while I watched Eliud try for his marathon. I took inspiration from watching him every second while I tried to pace myself for my own challenge. In the end, it took me an extra half hour but I enjoyed every minute of watching this event, alone in the garage, pushing myself to my max and screaming for him during the last kilometer with what little breath I had to spare. It is one of the most memorable moments I've had just being alone.

Thanks for this great video of such a great moment in history. I believe at 4:37 Eliud is saying “not so good for the mind” in terms of the course being flat as difficult mentally, as for runners a long flat course is daunting compared to twists and turns on a course.

Amazing, but actually the Monza run was even more fascinating. Before Monza everyone thought that the idea of a 2h marathon was just crazy, afterwards it was just 25s away.
@nyangweso4 жыл бұрын
So right!! That's the thing about Monza! It really wasn't a failure. I know he would have loved to have achieved a sub-two-hour marathon on his first go at it but the fact that he was 25 seconds (or 26 seconds for 1:59:59) away was mind-blowing. It was like "Oh wait, this is actually possible?" He just needed to shed one second per mile which is nothing compared to shedding a couple of minutes. The Monza run was pivotal. It also showed that if anyone was going to do this, it was definitely going to be Kipchoge. The commitment, the focus, the consistency, the mindset. It's hard to find all those particular necessities in a single person. He is the stuff of legends.
