REFLECTING ON TRAINING AN LGD PUPPY - 1.5 YEAR UPDATE ON GREAT PYRENEES AS A LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN DOG

Today we are going to dive in on the topic of livestock guardian dogs, how Uhtred's training is going (especially his fear of grooming!), working on recall with an LGD and why that is SO important and just an overall update on my thoughts on having a livestock guardian dog on our small farm.
Livestock guardian dogs are meant to be a non-lethal predator deterrent. How do they perform this job? They bark - a lot. They patrol - which means if your fence isn't secure, their patrols will take them outside of it. Is your dog out of the pen? Chasing stock? I'll touch on some of these common issues as I explore training my lgd puppy.

I have been interested to watch your journey with your LGD. We got one about 6 months after you got yours. We had never trained an LGD before and watched all of your content and any other training videos we could find. After working with her consistently EVERY SINGLE DAY without fail- with the chicken flock, perimeter training and obedience she is now an awesome addition to our little farm. So much so that we are considering adding a second Great Pyrenees. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Sorry for the late reply, thanks so much for watching. In regards to a mentor, I would say all I've done is converse with other dairy goat breeders who have livestock guardians and asked for help through some Facebook groups when I wasn't sure of something. I think my background in working with dogs and studying dog behavior for many, many years was my biggest driver for success in working with Uhtred.

I have a 16 week old GP, he was living around sheep and cows the first 12 weeks but also very handled by humans. We got him at 12 weeks and he slept outside with our chickens, but never chased them. I also handled him and pet him a lot. We got sheep last week and he spends all his time with them except when we free range them the dog is more interested in being next to me than he is the sheep. My husband thinks he is too bonded to humans and should be more interested in the sheep while on the open range. What can I do to make him stay with the sheep and not me? Thank you!

I watched the whole series and your videos have had the best content of any LGD training videos I have watched so far. We are getting two female GP (mixed) in the near future. We plan to train them to stay with our free range chickens. We have only barbed wire fencing, but we are considering putting in electric wire for the area the dogs would need to stay in. What kind of electric fencing do you use? Is a one strand fence placed low a good enough deterrent? Also, does Uhtred now have his own pen away from the goats? And does he roam the area at night, or is he in his pen? I am very interested in your thoughts. Thank you so much!

We use the Premier 1 electric sheep and goat net fencing and we also have electric strands run on the bottom and tops in some area where we have just regular field fencing/welded wire fencing. Uhtred now has a pen where he can eat without being disturbed or if he needs to go up for some reason he can be shut in there, but he is living full time with our does. He did go through a phase of being in a pen beside the does though as we had to backtrack on some behavioral issues he was having with our cows. He and our steer do not really get along. The steer is too rambunctious and Uhtred does NOT jive with him. He can roam the doe pen and one of the pastures at night now but usually he stays in the barn or right outside the barn with the does.

Did you ever have issues with your does or bucks ramming your LGD pup? We have a 9 week old LGD and our does keep ramming her. Even our little bucklings are. She does great with our babies (minus the one buckling) idk what to do because she’s scared and I don’t want to put her in there until I know what the next right move is. I don’t want her to get hurt and get aggression with the goats.
