My hair really flattens out from sleeping no matter what I do. I use some aloe vera juice mixed with water in a spray bottle in the morning. It works great to refresh & hold my curls. The silk or satin pillow cases are awesome for skin & hair.

My hair is wavy and short, a jaw length layered bob. I have worn it both straight and natural. To be honest it's harder work keeping it looking presentable each day when it's wavy than when it's straight. When it is straight I would just wash and straighten it every few days and just brush it each morning, takes minutes. Whereas when it's wavy each morning I have a routine that's taking far longer and involves more steps. To my mind wearing my hair natural should mean it's easier to maintain, but that's definitely not the case! To keep curly hair looking good each day takes work. Excellent tip about working on a section at a time with the water spray, as I have quite thick hair it made a noticeable difference👍

Love this video, so helpful! Just another tip, instead of using heat to create the final few curls for straighter sections, you can (redampen the tiniest bit) and pin curl then diffuse dry, these hold up really well and avoids the dreaded curling iron!

Curly Susie, you are so good on camera. Loving your videos as I am just beginning my CGM journey. Still do not know how much natural wave/curl I have. I do know it's not straight at all. My hair has been from below my waist to buzz cut multiple times during my long life. So this time, I'm going to make another radical change and not only grow out my hair again, (been buzz cutting for the past 2 years) but allow nature to fully take it's course. No more coloring, no more bleaching, no more excessive heat styling, Curly Girl Method all the way. My hair is 90% white now. Yes, forty plus years of altering my natural hair in some way. Not much of that has really been fun either 🤑 I started this CGM by being positive all the buildup was gone. Then immediately used my new products to restore the moisture. I have to say Shea Moisture products are so fabulous. Feels decadently pleasurable. Aww, pampering💞 Like a very new head of healthy hair. The growing out will be the most challenging issue. Buzzing to growing out is something I've done before. Thank goodness winter is coming soon. Hats and scarfs will be my key accessories for months to come. BTW Darling, white shirts are very becoming on you, God Bless🙏🏼💙🙏🏼💙🙏🏼 from the Deep South USA y'all.

Hello from a fellow Nova Scotian. I’m on the other side of the province on the South Shore. Thank you so much for the curling wand comment. I started CGM a week ago and am struggling with the no heat rule. I always have a few small pieces that just don’t want to curl and it’s driving me crazy not fixing them! I feel better now, I will fix them when I need to on low heat. Your videos are great, by the way, and super helpful! I read an article about you in the news recently and it made me check out your KZbin channel. It gave me the push I needed to start CGM. Cheers! 🇨🇦

Thank you for this video. I've watched a lot of tutorials for curly hair but no hair looked like mine, and now looking at this my hair actually looks like yours right now. I know that my hair is curlier but because I'm transitioning after 17 years of straightening it, this is it now. I was also having this problem you mentioned that my hair looks the best on day 1, but then again I don't want to have to wash it again every day. So I am definitely going to try this out now. I only use 2 products. I wet my hair every day in the shower & Use conditioner & Gel. The big difference is, all of the ingredients in “curly girl approved” products are water soluble (including the gel) so try rinse easily in the shower. I only use shampoo once a month!!!

Hey, thanks for the reply and the tip! I think I'm just so used to being totally low-maintenance this is going to be a shift in terms of upkeep, but I'm so curious what will happen! Do you wet it through completely? Really enjoying your channel by the way, you have a nice manner, thanks for the videos you post :)
@CurlySusie
@CurlySusie 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lara!!! So it’s hard to explain & you’ll just have to trust me. I am .. SO low maintenance. I know I look better with makeup on etc but I just can’t put the effort in... unless I’m shooting a video haha or taking Instagram pics 😬 when I wore my hair straight. I’d wash my hair, blow it out, flat iron it, & leave it for a week or more. The problem is, I was damaging my hair, AND if my hair got wet or it was humid... I’d be a frizzy triangle. In the beginning, I found this new curly method complicated, and my hit took a while to look like this. But now.... my hair is so much healthier & it’s SO SO easy. As easy as wetting your hair in the shower. Takes me 5 min.
@lararose2586
@lararose2586 6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the tip, it's really reassuring to hear from someone else who is low maintenance :D I used to wear make up when I was younger, but wear it at most a couple times a year nowadays for special events. Nice not to worry about it and still be comfortable in your own skin. Have you tried the no-poo method at all by the way? It really appeals cause I can't afford a ton of products, just wondering if any curly sisters had tried it at all :)

Every couple of months I try to begin the curly girl routine, but i just cant stick with it! Usually by day 3, my hair gets SUPER itchy and it looks like I'm wearing a dirty, old wig! Personally I shampoo & condition every other day and stick to refreshing on my off days with the water/condioner only and some like gel like you demonstrated in one of you other videos (or like this, if im running late). I also air dry because I can never get it to look right the the diffuser. It just helps really puffy/frizzy and the curls lose their definion.

You have so much hair! I have only half of that ;_; I have the ones you called fugly. Hehe... 2c type, really thin and elastic. I'm still going to try out CG: it seems my hair craves for wetness and it's been dead dry too long and this is really helping for that. I got suprisingly good results on my first try: only with 1)co-wash and 2) conditioner mask and 3)plopping over night (no gel/creams, /oils - the mask was enough for hair this thin). 4) after waking up - freshing up with spraying water and cg-friendly treatment spray . Result was better than I expected, lots of small curls and strong waves - at work I got asked if I had perm :) It lasted well during the whole day - that never happened with other methods to get my hair curly! I didn't do final wash, since I already used good products. I'm going to do it later if hair seems to need it. Also trying to wash it like: CO-wash (2/3 washdays) and CG-friendly shampoo (1/3). I wanted to share this, if there is someone out there with really thin and easily greasing scalp, and wonders how this works. Today I tried cast with foam and it seems working. I was scared of greasy look, but it worked out well :)

Cheryl Junkin and Curly Susie, I have very hard water and am trying to learn how to handle my curly hair... what should I do differently because of the water? What my stylist taught me is to NOT rinse all the conditioner out of my hair after applying it in the shower. That seems to help me with the dryness of my hair. I guess you could get a water softener in your house but I think thats a little pricey. Try different leave-in conditioners too. It takes a while to find the exact products that are perfect for your particular hair. Good luck!

I think this is neat because when I visit more humid climates (I live in the desert now) close to the beach my hair curls up nicely, but now it naturally dries quite straight, but I used to fix my hair exactly like you do in your videos except I did not add gel in the shower I did it immediately after I got out. Always had great results, but I remember the looks I would get from people when I would say things like I only use shampoo like once every 2 weeks or nope I don't brush my hair either. Haha. My daughter(11) has curls (even in the desert) that she absolutely hates and she's always begging me to flat iron her hair. It's also difficult to see the look on my husband's face when I tell her things like no, you don't need to brush your hair, just spray some water on it and put on a headband (to control the new crazy curly growth that's about 3 inches long across the front of her hairline that really makes her hair look crazy). I'm really trying to get her to work with what she's got and not get stressed out over it. Your videos remind me that I'm not crazy for what I was doing and thinking and I should keep encouraging my daughter to use methods like this. Thanks.

As a child, I endured a lot of teasing (from adults) about my frizzy, curly hair. My mom tried to help, but there were very few styling products or tools back then. Please consider flat ironing your child's hair until she is old enough to do it herself, or until she decides curls are okay. Trust me when I say it could make all the difference in how she perceives herself.

I am struggling and I have a few reasons...in December I did a Brazilian blowout because I was and have for the most of my life blown dry my hair straight. The longest I ever had was a chin length bob and I always did love it that way, except if I was in humidity. I’ve done a few Brazilian blowouts and that has allowed me to now have shoulder length hair and the most fun part is that I now can put it up for the first time in my life and that’s amazing. I recently started using Monat products which are supposed to help hair grow and get really healthy so I’m trying to replace your products with theirs, though I will have to get the gel and cream you use. So, sometimes I love my curls and lots of times not-I don’t have the definition you have and I do think it curled better when it was shorter but also I think the Brazilian blowout has a lot to do with it.. It should wear off, I think, in a few months. What I end up doing is using my curling iron and I end up curling the top layer of my head with it- all around. By then I usually feel ok with it to leave the house...I guess this lots to do but I may be stuck with this for a while....I know you can’t fix this but it sure feels good to share with someone! Many thanks and I will be watching all of your videos!!!! You have such a nice way of educating us!

I have 2bc 3a hair low porosity. I have the same issue my 3a curls are underneath and waves on the top. I’ve tried pineappling and using a buff and my hair is flat and frizz on the top. So your hair holds the curl my doesn’t. My third day hair looks better than second day. Thank you for the tutorial will try it tomorrow.

So glad I found your channel. I’m a man with 4 years growth and I wore a baseball cap throughout the awkward stage and now pull the top and sides back with an elastic Thor style for work and the top layer of my hair gets pulled flat I guess so it looks like crap when it take it down. I’m going to try this and see if it will fix it.

Thank you for being so descriptive! The more you talk the more I can figure out if your and my hair type's similar. And it totally is! I have been trying to be sulfate free in my shampoo and hope to get to a point where I can just follow your 'use conditioner to wash your hair' method. I am ordering the gel right this moment and hope to achieve curls like yours. I am so sick of all the straightening and heating. I just want to be all natural now.

Could you maybe do some hair-dos as well? I know you have mentioned that there will be a phase where your hair will not look good - just while you are making this big change. Just found your videos, I am jsut now starting with CGM so I'm loving "following along," as it were! Thanks for being so thorough and explaining everything! PS I'm only saying this because you mentioned needing an eyebrow intervention (they aren't that bad, girl!) and please feel free to ignore!! But I think you would like them a lot more if you filled them in a bit more in the middle? Mine don't naturally grow all the way to line up with the outside of my nostrils like they are supposed to and once I got used to filling them in to that point (I use a makeup brush to measure) I liked mine a lot better! I'm sure there are a lot of videos about it, but I can't remember which one taught me specifically that trick. EDIT: Okay deffo ignore, just noticed this video is from like seven months ago so a billion people probably already told you. Oh well. Haha!

I wish I could stick with the CGM....I found it a horrible experience...not so much because my hair looked bad, but because I could spend an hour or more doing the whole method, get a half-decent result, and then wake up with an ugly mess on my head! All the hard work and time gone in a few hours! It is SUCH a time-consuming method, having to style and re-style daily. And it feels so unfair because I have barely subjected my hair to heat, compared to most people who have used heat tools almost daily. I blow-dried or flat ironed my hair about once in 3 months at most, for a fancy party or big occasion. But even so my hair just hasnt responded so well to this method, and I feel really deflated. I do use CG friendly shampoo n conditioner (at the moment its DevaCurl but once theyve run out I wont be buying them again) just to be kind to my hair, but I'm no longer using any product after a shower or doing the whole scrunch-plop etc routine. It was a lot of work for very unimpressive results.

Hey Safi! Hmmmm I wonder what took you so long. The whole reason I do this technique is because there is Zero styling time. I literally apply my products in the shower & walk out the door in 10 min. I made the creating a cast video to be informative but I never really use that technique. Just wash & go. I didn’t love Deva Curl either.

I resonate with this somewhat. I've spent my entire adult life being lazy about my hair. Never knew for sure that it was wavy. Used cheap drugstore shampoo/ conditioner every day, not realizing that it was making my hair look like straw. Stumbled upon the CG method by accident. Have embraced it for two months. But I have wavy hair that doesn't look good when I just wash and go, at least for now. I have to diffuse and my hair takes forever to dry. I'm pleased overall with the results, but it does take a lot of time (I've never been one to dye or blow dry my hair, so it's probably healthier than those who really damaged their hair). I'm tempted to go back to laziness. I'm experimenting with wash and go hair on the weekends, hoping that I can get by on a routine so I don't have to spend an hour on my hair every other day. Once the snow starts, I'll need to leave earlier for my 25- minute drive to work. Don't want to be fussing with my hair all the time!

Also this there a reason that some girls show their waves and curls more when their hair is shorter where as some girls with longer hair their hair becomes more straight, this annoys the crap out of me because I love my waves but sometimes I love my natural waves

I hear you! I usually have very long hair, just went for a hair cut and it's halfway up my back now! I had to really push for short layers as this is what brings out my curls. It's hard to explain to hairdressers that you want both length AND short layers...but I think I have finally found a hairdresser who will do what I want. For the longer layers I tend to wet this more during the week and scrunch to try and make them curlier like the rest of my hair.

When you wet your hair in the shower daily, how do you prevent product build up? Do you use conditioner or cowash everyday? Do you just use water and apply less product?
@cheshiregrin7892
@cheshiregrin7892 6 жыл бұрын
SupernovaPhoenix after all these months you've probably gotten your product buildup question answered, but, the Curly Girl Method approved products are water soluble. Without using Cowash or shampoo, the water will eliminate enough of the products to start again if you like. Always final rinse your hair with cold water to close the cuticle. For me, when I'm in the shower and I'm not going to shampoo with sulfate free shampoo nor Cowash , allowing warm water to flow through my hair while I use my fingers is enough. I can then use my conditioner, gel just as though I had washed. I generally shampoo once every two weeks. Cowash once or twice a week. But, I usually rinse the products out often to start my products again. For me it's easier to do that than to just dampen/refresh. Starting with warm water ending with cold. I do not mind going out with wet hair. It's a learning, trial and error thing. Oh yeah, I found out I'm protein sensitive the hard way years ago. If a protein is early up in the ingredient list, I flee from it. Silk protein way down the list is fine. Curly Susie and real+life curly girl are my favorites. Best wishes from the very hot Deep South USA.
