I've never heard/read a good justification behind people installing the filter drier outside and just after the condenser. A crucial purpose of the filter is to protect the metering device from loose debris since it's one of the most delicate devices in the system. As you describe in the video, the filter should be placed close to the metering device. When you install it outside directly after the condenser, any debris/contaminants in the fluid line (which is often 25' - 50' long) between the filter and the metering device will be flushed into the device on initial charge before being trapped in the filter after one full cycle. With the filter placed just before the metering device, it will catch all this debris between the condenser and meter before it has a chance to enter the device. Of course, after a full cycle the filter placement won't matter in this regard, but whatever debris is in that 25' or 50' of fluid line at initial charge could be enough to damage the metering device. Then there's corrosion when installed outside, as you've explained. Great videos.

For some reason, no filter drier was installed in the liquid line of my old condensing unit. It looks like there was a muffler installed in the hot gas line by the manufacturer. I did install a filter-drier outside when the suction line inside the condensing unit developed a leak. The filter drier was somewhat protected from the rain by an overhang so it never rusted or leaked for 11 years. The compressor finally died after running for 27 years. The one thing that I have noticed that causes accelerated rusting of exterior-installed liquid line filters is overheating of the filter and damaging the paint on the steel surface of the drier.

You say + or - 2 psig across the filter indicates a restriction but to be safe use + or - 4 psig. But wouldn’t the higher pressure indicate a greater restriction and + or - 1 psig be the safer limit?

What about the manufacturers that have them installed in the condensing unit. Its in contact with the outdoor conditions?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely Chad, there is nothing we can do about that. For systems that don't have them or an accumulator outside, they are the thinnest tin out there. The brazed part melts the paint off and that is where they rot out at. The filter direr in the video is an extreme but they still rust. As a service tech in your area, if you are not finding them leaking then it is not that big of a problem. I will say that for most installations, it is fairly easy and not that much more work to put them inside. Thanks Chad!

My master technician I ride with almost always puts the filter drier inside the outdoor condenser, so installing the new filter drier near the evap is more preferable then in the Outdoor unit?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
Yes indoors is always more preferable unless it came from the factory installed inside the outdoor unit. I have never had one rot out inside but I have had many rot out outside and their is no difference for the refrigerant flow or other concerns. The tech may just not want to go in the house to braze. But as all of us have done, follow the tech's procedures until you get out on your own. Then you can make your changes to your procedures without offending him, Thanks Rob!

Something else about filter dryers I didn’t know, just because they physically fit does not mean they are the correct dryer for the capacity of the unit . Example - there are different types of 3/8 dryers for bigger units.

Great Question! This would come from servicing or improper beginning vacuum pumping. There will always be some even if little. The filter drier also holds acids and due to the filtration, will stop foriegn material and a possible copper shard. You don't know who may service this unit after your installation. Thanks!

Had a new Trane split HP installed Feb 2020. Recently discovered the crew did not install a filter drier. System heating and cooling well. Delta-T 19-20 deg diff in a/c mode. New line set installed. Not sure if nitro was flowed while brazing. Will not be using install contractor again. Should I just let it ride at this point and have one installed down the road if the system has to be opened for any reason, such as a leaking coil ? It would cost less at that time. To do it now would probably be $300-$350 labor & materials. I'm guessing at that. What is your opinion ? Do now or later ? Thanks

my girl has a 30 year old rheem 1.5 ton unit and the dryer is outside but in good shape. but this year the unit did not cool good. i found tons of crud on the condenser coil and cleaned it. it has at 80deg outside temp running it had 35# and hs 150# temp on the liquid line at the service valve was 83 deg and at the evap it was 56 deg. i did not think to check the temp at the dryer but i wonder if the 30 year old dryer may be the issue. i soaped all the fittings the evap ends and condenser ends and no leaks. in the foo state at 80 deg it had 112# and 3 weeks later at 60 deg it had90# so i do not think the unit has any major leaks. but now i think the dryer may just have failed. should i got back and start it up and test the temps again to see if they are different at the dryer? if so can i jst actuate the relay outside and run the unit without the furnace calling for the ac unit to run? or will that cause a error due to superheat at the evap? it has cap lines on the evap. thanks

This is off the subject of this video, but when you showed where the accumulator was, I noticed leaves and other material in the bottom of the condenser. When you notice that is it a good idea to suck all of the debris from the inside of the condenser? And using a garden hose to clean the fins, is that a proper way of doing it? I was working on my sons unit and when I opened it up, OMG!!!!! I used the hose to clean the fins. I am a novice at working on systems and have just purchased a set of gauges. Would it hurt to use his unit as a guiena pig, of sorts, to learn? I have replaced a circuit board and his indoor fan already by myself.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
The units do accumulate leaves. I have seen even 5" deep with leaves before. Definitely clean them out and yes, water from the hose should be used first before using a coil cleaner. Then after the cleaner is applied and you have waited ten minutes, clean off with the garden hose again. Before doing this, make sure if there was a outdoor motor replaced, that there are no open connections for the hose water to get into, thanks Todd!

But I never do it like that I braze them in. Is it ok to use flare fittings with the pressures in the line? Thanks again.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 8 жыл бұрын
Many lower pressure systems like 134a have flare fittings but I really would try to minimize the amount of flares. They could be used and with the mini splits they don't give you a choice. If I have a choice, I always braze. Flares have a potential to leak especially if they get bumped. Many times that you see leaking flare joints on mini splits it is because of an improper installation that was not leak checked or vacuumed properly. Thanks!

@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
Are you looking at something like a Honeywell L8151A? The unit may not be firing because the boiler temp has not dropped low enough yet for the unit to fire again. The T and T terminals do not work like a gas furnace would. To turn the circulator on you touch the t and t terminal together. If you have more than one zone then you do take power off of a transformer and that power when calling for heat opens the zone valve and the end switch closes the t and t terminals so the circ pump can come on. I hope this helps! Let me know if I did not answer your question. Thanks
@Pretzel114
@Pretzel114 7 жыл бұрын
Hi acservicetech, thanks for the quick reply. The aquastat is a Honeywell r8182d. I understand completely what you are saying about the boiler temp not being low enough. I am a little unsure on the t-t terminals. I know the t-stat goes to them, so are they the terminals that send 24v to the t-stat? I thought I would have 24v with my meter at the t-t terminals on the aquastat? The other thing is I push in on the relay for the burner and it won't start, shouldn't it start if I push that relay in and have it jumped out at t-t? Sorry for the confusion, I just don't work on the boilers enough like I do the warm airs. Thank you so much for the help.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
In reference to the t t terminals, you can't hard power a thermostat off of those like a furnace that has common. When t and t are open it will read a potential of 24 volts. You do have 24v coming off and then the two get connected and then it goes to the load which in this case is a 1000 ohm resistance load in the board and then to common on the transformer which signals for the circ pump to come on. If you were to think about it, it is like a 24v hot going through a switch(thermostat) and then going to the 1000ohm load and then to common. The problem is you have one hot 24v and the other has common to the transformer and then the load and then to the t terminal if that makes sense. I usually just go ahead and jump t and t or turn the thermostat on to heat and run the system on full heat load so whether that is one zone or 8 zones in order to get the temp of the water to fall and then I watch for what temp the burner actually turns on at and then exactly what temp it shuts off at. I then make adjustments to the water temp setpoints based on that. I hope that helps!

acservicetech Thank you so much! this makes perfect sense and I put it in my notebook. I did some more test and I think like you said it is because the water temp is not low enough. Hi Craig, I'm installing a Goodman 2 ton split system...GSXC18. I noticed on the outside condenser, down on the inside of the coil housing, right off the compressor on the 3/8 liquid line is a filter drier. Would I still install a second filter drier at the evap coil? Wasn't sure if that would create more of a strain on the compressor pushing refrigerant through two driers? I am on a 85' line set to the attic air handler. Thanks!

If it is on the discharge line right after the compressor, it is a muffler and not a filter drier so will be good for you to install a liquid line filter drier after the condenser coil. Best if it is inside the building to avoid rust, thanks!

All Goodman systems come with a filter drier installed on the inside of the condenser ahead of the comlressor, it is not a muffler. 25 years in the HVAC industry. Cheers from L.B.I.N.J.

I notice that my condensing unit has one inside and the installer put one outside Is this hurting my efficiency?

The one inside may be a muffler if it is located on the discharge line on the compressor instead of the liquid line inside the outdoor unit. Usually there is only one and it will add some friction if there are two. If it were a new installation, it shouldn't have two liquid line filter driers, thanks

Whenever I have a leak at my braze joints it’s always at one of my filter drier joints. Does anyone know why I might have this issues? Drives me nuts.

It's because the cooper is so thick where you make your connections and it's harder to get it hot wen your trying not to burn it up

Your corrosion comparison had more to the with brand than anything else. Those are the exact same ones AMANA and Goodman install in their systems from the factory. I’ve been to many of them that are over 10 years old that still look like the one you showed. They resist corrosion extremely well. But, I’ve seen other brands look like that shitty rusty one in a matter of a year or two.

Yes the metal is even thicker on them. The rusty one came off of a unit at the beach, thanks!

Hi it's Blaze from SoCal. I'm changing out a TXV and going to MO99 from R22. Should I add a filter drier. This is a 3 ton Rheem heat pump.

That real rusty one you have there looks something like the one that was just removed from my York outside home AC unit. From what I understand it is 'powder coated' and the corrosion on mine went undetected, as it was occurring under the paint/powder coating without showing on the outer surface until the last pangs of life when the coating peeled off in layers to reveal the rust underneath. And mine was only 5.5 years old. I contribute it to improper undercoating of the steel canister before the outer paint/powder coating was applied? photos/discussions here: I'm thinking it was a lousy China made product? How would you install the filter-drier unit 'inside' in these big self-contained outdoor home style AC's?

When I said inside in the video, I was talking inside the building in front of the indoor coil if the system is a split system. If the unit is an outdoor packaged unit then the filter drier would have to be installed in the unit which is outside, thanks!

I figured that must be what you meant,...installing it inside vs outside. Have you seen a number of these filters rust to the extent of that one you displayed, and that one of mine? I've was in the boat business for years, and salt water boats as well, so I have experienced metals that were not properly prepared for their environment. This extent of rust under the outer coating reeks of the same problem,...improper undercoating!

Yes I have and I always advocate installing them inside on splits, but on package units I recommend wire brushing and painting them if they are starting to rust, thanks
