It looks like the LG has a filter for particulates. The others don't have that layer of filter material over the charcoal. So smaller particulate removal on the LG. But particulates isn't what I'm concerned about. I'm concerned about what the charcoal filters out..like heavy metals. Interesting tear down. Good for you!

We tend to just get the home Depot brand still but our water is just hard not otherwise bad. The LG is for sure a better made filter with more components inside hence why they cost more too...yeah I'm sure that all weighs more too which would make sense.

The guy at Home Depot told me only the GE filter and not HGX (Home Depot) brand filters out Pharmaceuticals.

The white paper surrounding the carbon has a few purposes: 1) Reduces the chance of the carbon wall cracking if dropped or poorly handled. A good indicator that a water filter might be compromised is evaluating the construction and design of the product packaging. Poor construction can increase the chance of premature failure, especially when sold in packs of two or three. 2) Reinforces the strength of the carbon wall when water pressure in the system is excessively high. Water likes to take the path of least resistance, so when under high pressure, the weakest part of the carbon wall will fail. Hairline fractures will most likely be where a failure begins, resulting in premature failure. 3) Protects the carbon filter from water hammer shocks. A water hammer shock is a type of pressure wave that occurs when a flow of water is suddenly stopped. Since water is an incompressible fluid, the sudden stop sends a pressure wave throughout the pipes in a house. Cracking of the carbon wall might occur when the refrigerator water valve suddenly starts and stops. To observe this phenomenon, try quickly opening and closing a water faucet in your house. Chances are you will hear a bang and rattle of your pipes. Hope this sheds some light on why OEM water filters are sold in packs of one, have strong and protective product packaging, and contain some kind of reinforcement filter paper surrounding the carbon wall. The one cracked in half does nothing, the water freely passes thru the crack. China quality control they look good but the bonding is bad wonder if 3 outta 4 are cracked?

We went back to just buying the LG the last time I changed it last year. Cost $$$ but it's a nicer filter for sure.

What I wonder is what the water flow path is, from outside to inner or inner to outer? The Carbon tube is chemical filtration and the "cloth" baffles me because after watching a couple videos, I do not see any of them with any sediment either in the tube or inside the carbon tube. With that said, I believe these are only filtering chemicals.

Well I guess it would take an expert to figure out how active the charcoal is in each. another test would be to see how quick you can fill a gallon bucket to see how compact and slow the water filters through. I'm glad you cutem open, But the mystery is still on the unseen chemical side. I understand the best charcoal comes from coconut and I think it needs to be activated with lye. Thanks much !

Used a HDX filter before,but this filter didn't work well. Their carbon can't remove anything in water

Or what you can do is take water samples from every filter, get them analyzed and see what does the best.
