I finished the book a few minutes ago. I loved reading all of their stories, and I fell in love with all three of them. Their journeys were based off real events, and I think that's what's so gorgeous about this book. It opens your eyes to the world around us and the past we may or may not have seen. Love to Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud. Work of fiction or not, the impact is real.

Ikr!!! SPOILERS!!! Josef and Mom get send to concentration camp, when dad is nowhere to be found, and Josef gets sent so Ruthie can survive. Isabel has a happily ever after, when they make it to Miami, while the coast guard ship Is chasing them. Isabel's brother was born in the ocean, but was practically born American. since Ivan had died earlier in the book, they named the baby boy Mariano, to remember Ivan. Mahmoud, mom, dad, and Waleed all walk to turkey, and find no other than Ruthie Landau, and even though they don't find Hana after she got given away so she didn't drown, Ruthie promises Mahmoud that thye will find Hana soon.

This book was extremely gripping and very well written. I think this may be Alan Gratz best work. I really enjoyed following Mahoumad, specifically. It starts a little slow but very quickly gains traction. Its fast paced and to the point. If i had any criticism, it would be that there wasn't more detail, so you weren't able to really "attach" to the characters. Having 3 different plot points didn't help that. But that's still a very minor thing in my eyes, and i thoroughly enjoyed this book. 😊 Highly recommend if you're into historical fiction!

Amazing book! I finished it in one day... couldn't put it down. But please. I need to know. Did they ever re-unite with Hana? In all seriousness, call your Senators, Representatives at (202) 224-3121, demand they end this cruel and inhumane treatment of refugees / asylum-seekers at our borders. We are all human and deserving of life, liberty, and happiness. Oh and donate what you can to UNICEF and Save The Children. They are the helpers.
@phantomhivedd6 жыл бұрын
Ani Gold They never ended re-uniting with Hana, sadly. I figured the dinghy they put her on had made it over faster and they had left with her already, or the dinghy crashed and she drowned.

Would my Dad count as a refugee? He was extremely obedient to the government and showed support for the Communist Party in the PRL. He managed to get a visa to visit the US, and he applied for asylum as soon as he came. He didn't go back to Poland until after 1989. He left Poland for the same reasons that people left, and currently leave, Cuba for.
