alright mr gammon, despite the economy being crap and public spending being reduced its pretty hard/impossible to end up sleeping on the streets. source, I've worked with charities who house homeless people, and i've slept rough. the people who sleep rough, generally speaking have an underlying issue, which means they're too gone in the head to do the paperwork needed to get support, or their social network has broken down due to abuse problems etc. you say 'but they were in the army', but remember there are plenty of people who leave the forces dont end up homeless, the person in your unit who keeps bring down the rest of the unit cause they dont pull their weight, back then you'd give them some stick and punishment, why should you suddenly care about them now?. like all other occupations there will be 0.01 percent who have alcohol problems or severe mental health problems which makes them candidates who will fall victim to homelessness, its not nice, but everytime you help them with a bed or counciling, they will fuck things up again and be back on the street and then people like you start yapping about refugees in hotels which dont help.

The daily costs of 250 GBP per room for stay, meals, security and renovation of the hotel comes to 168 x 250 = 42.000 GBP... or 294.000 per week... or 1,26 million per month or 15,33 million per year. At a time of record homeless, record low numbers of home ownership (in last 10 years the number of home owners aged 30-49 - dropped by a half!) austerity measures, over 1 million homes in UK living in immediate risk of eviction (ie they go to bed tonight expecting a knock on door at 6am to evict them) more so with what has happened in Rotherham, Rochdale, Telford, newcastle, Oxford, Hudds, Bradford etc etc yet there are 10's f billions spent every year of UK/English tax payers, giving, free homes, transport, healthcare, education, sick pay, welfare, pensions & now it seems bed, breakfast & evening meal in hotels etc etc to people from 4000+ miles away... The problem with your suggestion, whilst admirable, is that a lot of homeless people on the streets of the UK are there as a consequence of mental health and drug issues which preclude them from hostels, e.g., hostels have a no drugs policy, so unless a homeless person can instantly give up a heroin addiction that has controlled them for the last 10 years, then they are unlikely to secure and keep that place in the hostel.

I digress, I didn't say that I agree with the government housing potential terrorists in hotels, I merely pointed out the difficulty in housing Britains homeless. Simply putting Britain's homeless in a hotel does not address the root cause of why they ended up homeless, i.e., mental health and drugs. The consequence of not addressing the root cause, is that the hotel placement fails and they end up on the streets again. Therefore, the solution is housing in a centre which provides a roof over the head along with intervention for the mental health and drug problems. A room in a hotel, no matter how nice the hotel is, is not a solution to address these problems. In regards to housing the refugees, there should be specific refugee camps offshore, rather than using local hotels to house people of which we don't know the criminal history or background.

I think, if they are Afghan, they came on planes when the country got taken over a few months back. I have a sneaky feeling that the UK is legally obligated to house these people. It really is a a farce how it is being handled. As seen, although its a hotel, they seem to only be allowed out for certain periods of time and when coming back have to go straight indoors. Very, very strange. Its sad that they are treated like this by very minimum wage security guards. As you point out, it's sad that the money is being spent on this.
