The 3 point mounting to the base is to prevent warping/twisting the cutter head assembly when mounting.

I'll tell you what, you could have gone to H&F or Carbatec and got a newbie but I reckon the satisfaction you get every time you use this machine makes it worth all the tea in China. Brillant resto job, so good to see nice equipment given a new life.

You're right on both counts Gordon, however, I saved a bit of coin buying second hand and the machine works great now, as good as a new one. Plus I enjoyed the refurb process and it was good video content :-).

that bolt mounting pattern is standard practice on all jointers due to them not wanting the top to not warp with the base since the bases on cheaper jointers like this are stamped.

Yes, you're right mate. I'll get around to it one day. Thanks.

The reason for only three bolts to mount it to the cabinet is so if the cabinet top isn't level ar square it will not pull the casting out of alignment. It is done that way for a reason and not to save the cost of a bolt. 45 years fitting experience taught me. Cheers
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that insight Glenn, makes sense. However, when you consider how heavy and solid the jointer is and the cabinet is only sheet metal, you wouldn't think its a problem. Cheers mate.

RE the three bolts, my guess would be that they did that to avoid "racking" (twisting) the frame when you torque down the bolts
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony. Yeah, I've heard that and it makes sense. I'm not noticing an issue with the planer yet but if i do that will be the first thing i change.

I suspect that the casting mounts on 3 positions so when the box that it sits on contorts to the uneven floor the casting will not break from its own weight plus the weight of the box and the motor Inside the box.

Thanks Joseph. i've had this comment a few times and i totally understand it but so far i've had no issues at all.
@charleskrieger4166
@charleskrieger4166 6 жыл бұрын
You might want to rethink mounting with 4 bolts as that could induce a twisting force that the three bolt mount would avoid. I believe the 3 bolt mount was designed to avoid the possibility of twisting the castings.

Thats a good point Charles but its now been like that for more than 18 months and no problem yet. Cheers mate.

There is a very good reason why there are only three mounting bolts on the base. It creates a tripod three point rest that does not stress or twist the casting. I have a 20” wadkin that weighs two tons. It rests on three points not four.
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian. I know the reason for the three point mount but I don't have any issues with mine this way. It works surprisingly well for a generic brand. Cheers mate.
@brianminghella3312
@brianminghella3312 6 жыл бұрын
DownUnderWoodWorks . Just a suggestion but if you want to reduce the noise of the machine a bit buy some soft rubber mat and cut it to fit under your mounting bolts. Those steel stands tend to resonate badly and make the machine much noisier. You can also reduce the noise with some sound absorbing foam inside the cabinet. If your lucky your machine ways are still accurate but a lot of those wedge beds have castings that are not seasoned properly so they are prone to warp. Once they go out of tolerance you may as well scrap it. Good luck.
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian, I like the idea of the rubber under the mounts. I'll give it a go.
@eejuice
@eejuice 4 жыл бұрын
@@brianminghella3312 Good idea! I've got the same jointer and a noise reduction would be a welcome enhancement. That sheet metal is like having the tool perched atop a tympani drum! I might see about a link belt rather than the solid V belt it currently has, but there's no way in hell I'm going to spring for one of those helical carbide-bitter cutterheads. They're seem to be running around 6 times what I paid for my 8 inch jointer. Outrageous!

The reason it has 3 bolts is the same reason bedrock style hand planes have 3 contact points on the frog.....it keeps it from wobbling. Think of a 3 legged chair vs a 4 legged chair....the 3 legged one will never rock and will always maintain 3 points of contact

Came with a stack of blades (which in all honesty look as old as the unit) and some home made jigs. I have a Google+ page if you want to suss through the pics for it. Got my eye on a band saw at the moment, hopefully I can add it to the work shop.

@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 7 жыл бұрын
It actually didn't take very long at all. Cleaning the old paint off with the multi tool was quite quick. Repainting it was also quick because I used a primer-less paint. I had to take the cutterhead to have the old bearings pressed off and the new ones installed.The things that probably took the most time was going to buy the bearings and having the knives sharpened. All up I'd say easily within a week.

Thank you. I am still not clear about table adjustments - my jointing results in snipe at the end of the stock. Checking the infeed table shows sagging at the end away from the knives but the manual is almost silent how to adjust it (gibs) . The wood whisperer has a good video adjusting the infeed, but then many others talk about adjusting the outfeed table (my manual says do not touch). Would it be correct to adjust the outfeed table to the knives and then the infeed table to be co-planar with the outfeed table?
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Yes mate it can be a confusing subject. The gibs on the machine don't adjust the height, they take up any sideways movement in the dovetail. To adjust the beds up or down you have to place shims in-between the horizontal faces of the dovetail runners but only on the outfeed table. I will explain. The infeed table is the only one that gets adjusted up or down for depth of cut so start with it and tighten the gib screws until the slack in the dovetail is gone but the table can still slide up and down without jamming. Next, the outfeed table should be adjusted to be co-planar and parallel to the infeed, this is done with shims. Once the outfeed table is adjusted lock it in place with the gib screws, it doesn't need to be moved. Lastly adjust the planer knives to the outfeed table. Hope that helps.
@mattg6262

@@DownUnderWoodWorks hey just read your reply here to this gent but I'm curious where do you set the infeed table in order to make the adjustment of the outfeed table?
@eejuice
@eejuice 4 жыл бұрын
@@mattg6262 I set my infeed table a smidgon lower than the outfeed table when checking for coplanarity. With a long straight edge, I then make sure the gap between the straight edge and the infeed table is the same everywhere: close, far, left and right. I use feeler gauges. Not expensive, but really useful. If all the gaps are within a thou or two of each other, I'm fine with it. Takes a while. After the outfeed table is all shimmed up and good, I don't mess with it again.
