Refused to Pay My Water Bill in Ajijic, Mexico!

The water bills in Ajijic are figured by a formula unless you are unlucky enough to have a water meter. The discount program for paying in advance is messed up! Stories of retired life in Ajijic, Mexico on the shores of Lake Chapala. The Balnearios remind of the ones in Zinapecuaro Michoacán. The ones in Zinapecuaro are huge with multiple pools, and water slides all filled and heated by the natural hot springs. Great childhood memories.

Gil C, there are Balnearios near ZInapecuaro, I never heard of these despite being of Michoacán lineage, where abouts are they, they're not near Uruapan, Patzcuaro or Tingambato,...gonna google it, might just be the place to get together with my relatives from Uruapan and Morelia. :)

Joe. Every year we would visit our family in Morelia and we went several times over the years to Zinapecuaro to the pools and slides. This was in the 80s. Just ask my mom she says it’s about an hour drive located just past Álvaro Obregón. Just googled it looks very different then back in the day but still there. I have nice childhood before l move to America our water was 25 pesos a month in zacatecas and electricity 100 a month gas 60 pesos every 3 months everything else was very economical. 1 bicycle slingshot radio and casets tv that all l need it and l was happy mom and dad never argued or fight but it was one problem they didn't like to work hard enough in their kids our communication was poor. And that's why im here lm still leaning from people like you.the great country the l left behind And looking life in different ways. We're courage to look for the American dream. I live in Nha Trang, Vietnam. A large river runs through the center of town. The rainfall is horrendous, so heavy the town floods two or three times a year. My bill for water last month was 980,000 dong or $50. They tell me it's because I have a tiny pool not much bigger than a couple of hot-tubs. .

I haven’t been in Mexico for more than 20 yrs, but I think you can report that to (PROFECO) Procuraduría Federal Del Consumidor) or consumer protection agency. In fact if restaurants or stores wants to charge anyone for a price that is more then What the tag or menu says these businesses can get in a big trouble with this agency if anyone reports it.

I was visiting a cenote and there was a card at the booth that tells cashier how much to charge. It was like that: 1 person - 20 pesos, 2 - 40, 3 - 60, ...., 7 - 140 pesos. I guess the key is to keep your expectations as low as possible and you would be presently surprised (maybe)!

In the US water bills are attached to the property, not to previous owner. However, utilities are attached to the previous owner. In my area, water bills are treated like tax bills, if you don't pay in the same calendar year, they sell the water or tax lien to a buyer. They can foreclose in two years. So you made out well in my eyes.

Allow me to make a clarification JC. You say they did tabulate the discount when you paid in advance (for the 15 cubic mts/mo), but not from the excess charges. I may be misunderstanding but it seems you're expecting a 15% discount on the excess also which would not be applicable as it is an excess usage charge not the yearly prepaid charge.

If the standard bill is $10 and I paid $9 enjoying a 10% discount for paying in advance and then my excess usage is another $5 for a total bill of $15 I should pay the entire excess of $5 for a total of my discounted $9 plus the full excess of $5 for a total paid of $14. With me? They billed me for $6, the difference between the $9 I paid and $15 I used. I paid $15 for $15 worth. Where’s the discount for paying in advance? It’s right there senior! See we took a dollar off of your standard minimum. It’s right there in the excel spread sheet on the computer. You only paid $9 instead of $10.

I liked your video. Water company have buzzard ways of doing their job. My brother rents a house. And they told him he owns two years of water. And he just moved in the house. He paid,he doesn’t want to bring trouble to the owner of the house in the future. The old tenants lived in the house two years and never pay for water. While one of my aunts who lives in Guadalajara had never pay for water. And she is not thinking on paying some day. She is old and don’t care about it😀😀😂😂

So, here's a rought stab on this water bill. Say your upcoming predicted bill is a 1000 pesos. You give them 850 pesos, and they give you a reciept for that amount with the date you paid this. So, if you paid more or the original 1000 pesos and have a reciept to prove that, they are wrong. If you have a recipet that you only paid 850 pesos than you are. This shows mathematically the original applied discount. Forget the adjustment a year later, that just complicates the ordeal. Yeah, I 've had a similar problems in a property where they didn't take meter readings for a long time. An oldschool trick is to remove the meter and report it as stolen.

JC, one of the things that I learned when living in Mexico in regard to dealing with the home services departments is that you have to have Patience. Dealing with the workers is like dealing with a wall, they don’t reason, they don’t sympathize and they don’t care. Maybe they’re just afraid to lose their job if they astray from what they were instructed to do, even if that doesn’t make sense! Super frustrating. But, I guess it’s the price to pay for living in Mexico 😉 having to deal with what I call “burro-cracy” lol

In San Miguel de Allende my water rate is half for being a registered old timer. Paying yearly the total amount of last year’s consumption at the present rate. Paying yearly keeps you from getting cut off if you don’t receive the monthly statement/ missing a payment. If you go over the estimate no problem - just readjustment the next January. Yes there is a discount/ slightly lower rate for yearly. Obviously your company is not as well educated in business mathematics.

Seniors over 60 are discounted 50% all over Mexico for water and property tax bills. They do not do it in Chapala because there are so many expats over 60. They do honor the senior discounts in Jocotepec.

Ever since 2010 the CEA has been promoting we the users pay our water bill in advance, and this year another promotional flyer attached to the water bill, they say you get a 5% discount for an anticipated semester payment or 10% for the yearly discount and you also get 100% discount on fines and fees. Huh,...on average living here in the city in a middle class zone we pay 87 pesos a month, so if I were to pay in advance it would be $1,044 pesos and my 10% discount would be 104 pesos, nah like you say we have water meters and the water that we use we pay! An Aunt of mine had a problem with these bureaucrats, during 5 years the CEA didn't check the meter for the REAL water use and were charging her 13 cubic meters a month, when on average she consumes only 8 to 10 cubic meters, fast forward 5 years and I'm going to help her recuperate what they overcharged her, instead of it being somewhere between 2,000 and 2,400 pesos, they only reimbursed my aunt 370 pesos,when I asked the lady who attended me, she said its based on the REAL consumption of the year at present, past years aren't considered, in other words the Water Authority scammed my Aunt big time! =P As for the ball o nair we o Kosala, what is JC talking about, lol...and when you turn the cam towards the swimming pool, ah Balneario Kosala(Kosala Swim Center), beautiful place, lol...washing off the sweat with cold water! LOL I had a water leak after the meter and they charged me almost $500 for one month. That was on the assumption that the same water went back into the sewer system...... I fixed the leak. They said they will adjust the bill when they can see the average on the next few bills... I'm still fighting with them because of the fact they charge you for the water consumption as if it goes back into the sewer..... I told them I will install a water storage system and still use the sewer and ask them HOW will you charge me now....... No answers yet :)

LOL! I've been there in Portland, Or with the water company. I've gotten adjustments for leaks. The next thing they'll get you on with your plan is a permit to collect rain water and an evaluation by the EPA to make sure your storage is not going to break and flood the neighborhood. I had the same problem a few years ago with the meter, told them to remove the meter and have non-portable water delivered by truck to my cisterns. Way more reliable than city water and not much more expensive. There are a lot of new constructions around me and city water is so contaminated, no better than pond water.

Hey pal , my father was an Italian-Jew , he was a very mean spirited person and a religious intolerant. When he died , we buried him in a catholic cemetery in my beautiful country called ITALY. Latin might be a dead language but the heredity of it ,is overwhelming . Wherever my father went he saw crosses , he studied law and he had to learn and understand Latin and he was 😡. He spoke Italian and understood French, Spanish, English,Portuguese and so on , and he was mad 😡 because Latin was the mother of all these languages. Before he died in the hospital, the doctor told the name of his medical condition in Latin and he passed away soon after. By the way, I hope is resting in peace ✌️ because on his tomb we put a Latin cross and wrote and use the Latin calendar for his birth and death days. I meant to ask you and then forgot. Do they put toxic chemicals in the water there like chlorine and the really deadly one, flouride? I am turning 70 end of the month. That's middle age right? Except I noticed a little short term memory loss. Lol. Maybe it's from the chemicals in the water here. I can smell them and never drink the water here but maybe it comes through the skin when showering.

We drink bottled water here. They do not put chlorine or fluoride in it. When we go to the States we can smell the chlorine in city water because we are not used to it. Flouride is good for kids with developing teeth. Those of us in .... yes, our middle aged 70's .... don't need it.

@@JCTravelStories when I came here from Germany ar age 7 the first time I went to a dentist he told my mother I had the most perfect teeth he had ever seen. I had almost no sugar in Germany along with no meat or dairy and no flouride. I just googled flouride. The effects can be grim and from what I know it is cumulative. The body has a hard time getting rid of non-food items. They tend to store in the fat cells and muscle tissue. The food industry has sold people on lots of sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Anyway, not a battle we can win. Have a good night.
