Yes, this did happen. Sabaton is known for its historical accuracy and majestic ballads. 1916 is another of their songs based on events during WWI, written by Motörhead. You need to listen all the way to the ending of their videos to gain more insight into the events.

This is a celebration of a real event, the script is based on letters written home by the participants. The cross is a replica of one erected just outside Ypres, Belgium. Most of the over 100,000 participants couldn't bring themselves to shoot at their newfound friends and were relocated to other parts of the line.

Sabaton has a sabaton history channel that educated o. The subject matter of each song. 1916 was the link at the end of the video. It is a tribute to Motorhead covering Motorhead's song 1916, it will probably wreck you. It does me, it is about the battle of the Somme.

This is a tear-jerker from beginning to end. I've watched it dozens of times over the last two years and it still chokes me up every time. The one part that got to me more than any other is the scene at the end where Par is carving "2021" in the cross. The chorus of the song is, "Our moment of peace in a war that never ends." I believe this 2021 scene is reminding us that that war STILL has not ended! We have just been in an extended moment of peace. I fear that glorious moment is rapidly coming to an end for us though. We have a very dangerous year ahead of us. 😢@@RNTV (A side note: There was another popular song written about this event a long time ago. Welcome to Sabaton. The video is so good because it was made by people who usually make movies. Moviemaking also stopped when the world shut down, so they had time for this. Formed in 1999, most of their songs are about Military History. Lead singer Joakim Broden and bassist Par Sundstrom( the guty at the cross at the end) are the primary songwriters , and only original members left. Drummer Hannes van Dahl( the 1st guy out of the trenches), joined in 2014, guitarist Chris Rorland (1st out on the other side) joined 2012, and guitarist Tommy Johansson ( battlefield guitar solo) joined 2016. Joakim has said this song is actually a waltz. The opening piano part is a variation of Carol of the Bells. Yes, this event did actually happen on Christmas 1914 - the only time it's ever happened. I'm a 73 year old Vietnam War veteran, and I can't even imagine something like this happening. It shows both the very best of humanity and the very worst of humanity. Peace!

Same situations, although never again on this scope, happened in nearly every war but they get mostly surpressed since it didn't fit the narrative. There are dozens of war diaries from WW2 of British, American and German soldiers, meeting each other, talking or sometimes just trading insults but never firing a shot. Most humans don't want to kill another and if they get a chance to just part ways they mostly did so. After WW2 all Major powers changed their training to beat this little bit if humanity out of their soldiers. Lindybeige did a very fascinating video about this topic with statistics showing how war changed forever.

Excellent reaction. Joakim and Par (the main songwriters for Sabaton) felt this event was very important and spent several years working on the song to make it as good as possible. When they filmed, they used a movie production crew to insure the best possible music video and that they would capture the meaning of the truce. The result was an epic and beautiful tribute to a special moment in time. This song is based on true accounts of the Christmas Truce that happen during WW1 in 1914. It was an unofficial truce between the German and English forces on the front. On Christmas Eve they collectively decided to stop shooting. The opposing sides were within shouting distance of each other. They began singing Christmas carols back and forth to each other. Eventually the soldier began to emerge from the trenches and mingle they wished each other merry Christmas, played a friendly game of football (soccer) buried their dead and exchanged gifts. It was an incredible moment of humanity in the worst human conflict we had seen thus far. It took them 7 years to gather material for this song and music video.

This one makes me cry every time. Almost all their songs are technically about war but actually about humanity: the bravery, compassion, ingenuity that comes out in extreme circumstances, or the tragedy of lost futures. I suggest _No_ _Bullets_ _Fly_ (animated story video) next, about two pilots (American and German). The story videos are great for filling you in on the backstory, and they usually have little extras at the end, so always keep watching!

If you like another suggestion, please look up "En livstid i krig" (a lifetime of war) and especially the live performance from Gothenburg. And make sure you have subtitles cos it is sung in swedish. Welcome to Sabaton! Absolutely a true story. Not everyone is a WW1 buff. I am & I've learned a ton from Sabaton. Great music mixed w/history. Sabaton isn't just WW1, but they've done a ton for a conflict largely forgotten & passed over. It'll sound strange, but when my daughter was little, I used to read her the story of the Christmas Truce of 1914. There really is a good message in it. Keep going down the Sabaton rabbit hole. Even if WW1 isn't your thing, they hv plenty of other content. But, their WW1 stuff is great. You'll learn a ton & rock out at the same time. It's bn time well spent for me. Oh, my daughter also loves Sabaton!

When this first came out, it quickly became my favorite Christmas song/video. That hasn't changed, and second place isn't close. This video should be a tradition everywhere. It's a shame that you didn't see the wife of the drummer Hannes (the blonde guy who was concussed by the grenade) in the closing credits, as the vocalist over those credits. Often times she's better known as Floor Jansen. 😉

Here's a fun one for ya. My cousin is a history teacher and a Sabaton fan. She use their videos and music in her classes. They make for easily digested icebreakers and introductions for chapters and events she teach them about. For myself, I collect uniforms and I have helped her out a lot through the years by lending uniforms and kit for her classes to study. I'm also an avid hiker so I've even taken some of her more "zealous" students out on marches/excursions as an extra coriculum.

I have a tenuous connection to this story. My grandfather enlisted in the British army in 1913 and was among the first British soldiers to arrive in France in August 1914. I have his discharge papers that provide the dates of his enlistment, service in France and discharge. While the rest of his story has been lost, he may well have been part of this truce. The story I heard from my father (his son) was that the German soldiers started singing Christmas carols and the British soldiers replied by singing the same carols, only in English. According to legend, a young English officer then climbed out of his trench and the truce was on. Unfortunately I never had the chance to meet my grandfather as he died before I was born. If you want to continue on the Floor/Sabaton/Nightwish Christmas train, check out Floor singing "O Holy Night" in Finnish at Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas), at a Finnish event where metal bands come together to put on a charity concert. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r56UiJZrmdKIj8U Floor is about six months pregnant at the time and Finnish speakers have said that "Raskasta Joulua" has a double meaning of "Heavy Christmas" and "Pregnant Christmas". The sabaton rabbit hole, someone mentioned earlier. Always joyful to see yet another set of people falling into it. If it's something Sabaton does above anything else, it's spreading key moments of history across the world, in a way that people can actually digest. One should not underestimate the importance of what they do. They manage to boil down highly important events and package in a highly powerful message that makes the listeners want to take the time to learn more about it. There are numbers of memes of the band with the words "The worlds greatest history teachers" and they actually won an award put out by the "Swedish Skeptics Association" (An association focused on getting science and education out to the public) as the educators of the year in 2022. While the aspect of knowledge about of history is, of course, important one should not look past the humanitarian part of the stories they tell. They focus very much on what we can do as humans, both good and bad. The song "No bullets fly" (you need to check the animated story version) is another very good example of what can be done if we set aside differences and choose to be humans. While 1916 (a Motörhead cover) talks about bravery and sacrifice, it still shows what happens when humanity as a whole forgets that we are all human. There are of course songs with a little less serious vibe to them as well and deserve a listen. Their live performances are top notch. I got to see them in Stockholm in April this year and it was an emotional rollercoaster of fun shenanigans on stage mixed with the seriousness of songs like this one. I'm glad you've got introduced to Sabaton. I like their music and their lyrcis, which are based on historical events. You should also react to Tommy Johansson who is a member of Sabaton (their guitarist). He has a great voice and his own YT channel where he releases new covers every Friday. He turns popular songs into metal music. His cover of Steelheart's "She's gone" or ABBA's "The winner takes it all" would be a good start, but all his covers are great.

I strongly recommend that you watch Sabaton's videos all the way to the end and pay close attention until it is over. Not only are almost all their songs about historical events, but they also like to hide some easter-eggs in some of them - typically near the end. This one is no exception, but you seem to have missed it by not paying full attention to the credits. The end-credit vocals were done by none other than the Valkyrie Queen herself - the singer of Nightwish, Floor Jansen - who happens to be married to Sabaton's drummer. Just as Chriestmas is about being with your loved ones, so did he in this by having his wife join in to add her incredible vocals to it. the music of both these bands - Sabaton and Nightwish are rabbit-holes unto themselves - enjoy your journey.

Loved your reaction. See everyone has said it was a real thing. As a matter of interest the piece that was being played on the piano throughout the song is Carol of the Bells. Sabaton is amazing, most of thier music is based around historical events. My 2 favorites being Bismarck and No Bullets Fly, both worth checking out. Yeay! When you reacted to VoicePlay for the first time, I got to comment a welcome to you two, to the VoicePlay world. Now I get to write you a new welcome as you by this video enters my other main favourite music world. For me it's either Sabaton/Tommy Johansson AND/OR VoicePlay/Geoff Castellucci, with a couple artists like Bass Gang and The Hound&Fox in between. Tommy Johansson is the guitarist you saw here. Like Geoff he has his solo channel you most definitely need to explore as well. Tommy has lots of Christmas music on his channel and a glorious voice. If Geoff goes low, Tommy goes high. one interesting thing to note is in the first verse the line goes," we are all friends" but in the third verse the line changes to," we were all friends" showing how they had to go back to their trenches to continue the battle after this moment.

Like others have written, it did happen, and it went silent almost on every trench line in western front, and there are stories about a football game, but in Germany for example and england almost every woman wrote a letter to the highest commander even to the king and the German kaiser and asked for a Christmas truce. Even my grandfather (on my mother's side) talked about it and he was born in 1917 but he had heard about it and learned about it. Sadly they did forbid such avens to happen again and they didn't have it on the eastern front not like they did on the western front

Not only do they tell true stories most of us have never heard, they have a second channel (Sabaton History) that provides the details of each songs backstory. I am a British Army Veteran, who served Her Majesty for many years. Now 72 years old. But, I am still in uniform as an Education Officer at a Military Museum. Where we have a Great War Trench built We re enact and show school kids what our Comrades went through. With the Ration that were issued to weapons that were used. We bring our own experience of conflict into the lesson. Kids really enjoy it.

Great reaction! Tears comes to my eyes everytime I hear this song. Maybe you react to "Joy of Christmas" from Majestica. The guitarist of Sabaton, Tommy Johannson has it's own Band and the album "a Christmas Carol" which tells the story of Ebenezar Scrooge is really fantastic and worth to listen to. But be careful, the "Tommy rabbithole" is as deep as the Sabaton 's one. He hast his own KZbin Channel and released a lot of Christmas Songs last year. You can also listen to "o Helga natt" the swedish Version of "O holy Night" Enjoy....

Im Canadian. We didnt have a truce. We killed the Hun on Christmas. A very good, very very good, few minutes is tge sainsberry commercial Christmas truce. This event was a once in history event. Everything happened for people to come together on Christmas on tge western front. The officers weren't happy but... the nco's run Everything so... this will never happen again in human history. And this beautiful moment should never ever be forgot.
