Over the past few years, our pasture have begun to degrade due to drought. We were not ready for such changes.
The world leaders in beef production are fencing their pastures. It's gives the grass an opportunity to rest and regrow, as well as to control the bulls to create calving season.
There is very little such expertise in Kazakhstan. We do not know how to dig 2000 poles, what wires to use, how will saigas and neighbors react to this?
And in general, will fencing help to be resilient during a drought?
I realized that a fence will help us not only to improve our pastures, but also to create a complete technological process of raising beef cattle.
By controlling the bulls, creating a breeding season and focusing on calving, we will be able to vaccinate animals against viral diseases.
We will not only be able to increase our earnings, but also we will finally have the opportunity to take vacation.
To test this hypothesis, I need 7 000 us dollar for purchasing materials for fencing.
After fencing, we will check the changes in our pastures using the local satellite imaging service Egistic.kz and compare the NDVI indexes of our grassland before and after.
Next, using the Sanamal record keeping system, we will evaluate the productivity of cows by calving rate.
If after fencing, calving rate will up to from 60% to 75% - it means fencing is suitable for us.
