@@Reggiebphoto my first lens was the tiny 16 2.8 and I actually have a used 90mm coming soon. I am currently torn between the 35 1.4 and 35 f/2. I see that comparison has been done to death but I was hoping with the xt-3 the af is not as bad with the 35 1.4, as everyone claims it to be. I would like the lens to be flexible enough to shoot a variety of things from my kids playing, to the occasional low light action (basketball, roller hockey, roller derby). It doesn’t have to be the best for the job, just doable lol. If that makes sense?

Not saying that this video wasn't useful. It was. But the problem for people new to the Fujifilm camera will be that you are moving too fast through your explanations. It is nearly impossible to find videos where experts REMEMBER what novices don't know or keep in mind, and leave out something that is obvious to a more experienced user. You find the same thing in all tech talks on computer use. It seems the expert will always leave out some info that the novice needs to make sense out of the instruction. It isthat I don't almost a given, like Murphy's Law, that the person explaining something to a novice will leave out that one thing that he/she assumes incorrectly will be known to the novice. That's the problem with rushing through a topic like this. I keep looking for a slow paced tutorial that doesn't try to cover everything about all focus modes, and will go slow enough to insure comprehension by a beginner. You come close, but I feel you are still rushing through it. Would consider making a tutorial for first time users who are less familar with these types of features.

Very helpful advice Reggie. I have the X-S10 and have been experimenting with the various AF modes/areas. The problem I have is that when shooting 4K video the focusing options are more limited than when shooting photos. It seems you can only choose between Multi or Area and then AF-S or AF-C but no tracking option. I make videos of erratically moving wildlife so any ideas of what AF settings I should use for that (e.g. a swan/goose moving across water)?

Thanks again for that great roundup and sharing your experience! AF-C drove me mad so often. So many great shots were out of focus so I rather use AF-S now. When I started digital photography with a Casio Exilim EX-S1 I never used AF-C and very seldom had focus problems. Sometimes options make you even struggle more so back to basic unless the situation is really challenging.

I set my AF-S/C to back button focus (AFON) and leave the focus mode in the front of the camera ALWAYS on C. This way, I can use my back button focus as AF-S by just clicking once and focusing at the subject and recomposing if needed without having to focus again since focus is locked and press the shutter button to take the pic or can also use it as AF-C simply by pressing and holding it and following my subject as it will continously focus and just press the shutter button when ready to shoot. You can also have face/eye detect on for portraits. You have the best of both worlds. I learned this technique from a KZbinr a few years ago and it has improved my focusing greatly. It does take a little while getting used to but once you do you will never go back (at least for me lol). For macro, food and product photography I change it to manual focus as i can take my time to fine tune where I want the focus to be.

Just a-b test the acquisition between true af s and afc. You’ll notice a difference. Xt3 and xt4 and xs10 all have the same af algorithm so it should be consistent. I wish the af-c on Fujifilm was good, but the af-s is really that much better and more accurate if something is stationary

M, S or C plus, what focus settings eg single point, zone and what about tracking and face detect? Sorry I'm just a little confused. I guess I need settings so when walking around, I see a scene, say group of people, where I want to bring the camera quickly up to the eye and take a shot without much time adjusting and potentially missing the shot. People could also be moving of course. Many thanks.

Thank you for posting this and sharing. This helps a lot! I still have a question if you don’t mind helping. I’m coming over from Canon. It seemed like on my Canon camera, I could point it at any scene and it would guess which “point” needed to be auto focused on, no matter where it was in the frame, and if it got it wrong, I could just touch the LCD screen to make it auto focus on the correct spot. With my Fuji, it seems like the only way to get it to “guess” where the autofocus needs to be is on Wide tracking mode, but there’s no way for me to then go and tap the screen to select the correct “point” it should focus on if it gets it wrong. Does that make sense? How can I apply the settings to get it to guess where auto focus should be, but still have the option to tap and adjust the spot if I need to? Thanks a lot in advance for your help and expertise!!!

@@Reggiebphoto Thanks I have touch screen on, but it only allows me to pick the point on single point or zone focus mode, and in those modes it doesn’t guess where the auto focus is first, only in Wide mode, but in that mode I can’t select a point if it’s wrong. Does that make sense? On point mode it just sticks to trying to focus on whatever is in the point I’ve chosen, it doesn’t first try to auto focus on something outside the point. I should be able to pick up my camera in any mode, and aim it at a baseball bat, and it should try to auto focus on the tip of the bat first, and if it doesn’t I should be able to tap the tip of the bat to then get it to auto focus on that. I may have to call Fuji. Thanks.

Make sure your shooting at at least 1500 shutter speed or 2000 and change the tracking speed in the settings to fast appearing subjects and don’t be afraid to use a higher iso like 1600 or 3200 if needed

It would be even more helpful if you could attach a recorder so we could see what you see during a wedding shoot or action shooting. Nobody is doing it with Fuji. Would give us a better idea of how each mode works. I'm honestly getting discouraged with my xt4 af.
@Reggiebphoto

That wouldn’t be possible. Nobody does that because it’s really bulky and slows down actual shooting

@@Reggiebphoto a few people do it. Taylor Jackson. Jared Polin. It's just a screen on top. I get it would be bulky but would make for better understanding of what you see.

Yeah Taylor Jackson didn’t do it until he’s had quite a following on KZbin and makes revenue from it. And Jared polin uses it in controlled shoots. I’m not going to risk my actual clients weddings for the sake of recording my evf at the moment.

@@Reggiebphoto I was just making a suggestion. I also notice a lot of Fuji shooters don't talk about the xt4 much. It seems not much confidence is in the Fuji AF system. Which is why I'm wanting a "pro" to show me in real time how it works for them. Anyone can talk about menus. Maybe someone will some day.
@Reggiebphoto
@Reggiebphoto 3 жыл бұрын
I know. And I was answering why it’s not a consideration for me. The xt4 and the xt3 have the same exact af system and image quality, sk there really isn’t any reason to compare them. If you like one you’ll like the other as long as you like the ibis. As far as trust in the af system, with weddings you have to be realistic with the limits. If it can’t be trusted it can’t. Doesn’t mean you can’t use the camera for weddigns or demanding situations, just means the photographer has to have better decision making

Great tutorial, Reggie! I have a question that is unrelated to it, though. My Xt4 histogram often shows that my blacks are expectable but when I look on my computer it shows that I lost some details in shadows. Clearly, I need to change something there (curves?) but I don't know what. Would you help me? Thanks/

Hi Reggie and thank you for the video. I'm a beginner and decided to go with the X-S10 combined with the 16-80 as my first camera/lens combo. I started off in full auto mode and gradually moving towards manual. I mostly take photos of my kid running around but even with continuous auto focus a lot of them don't come out as sharp, even in good lighting conditions. Could you share any tips? I imagine shutter speed is where I should start experimenting...
@viagensebabados
@viagensebabados 3 жыл бұрын
I would personally go to aperture priority so you dont have to worry too much about settings and may miss a nice moment because you were fiddling with your camera settings. I also have the 16-80mm and love this lens. Since your kids are running around, I'd use the lowest F number possible, that is f4. Then I'd set the dial for ISO and Shutter speed to A (auto) and go to your camera menu and set the AUTO ISO to a minimum shutter speed of 500s and maximum ISO 6400 (for shooting outdoors or even indoors as a guidance since the camera will eventually overwrite the maximum ISO anyway if it needs more light to reach that minimum shutter speed). Fujifilm cameras (the latest ones at least) can handle high ISO like a pro so dont worry too much about the pics being grainy (better have a slightly grainy pin sharp picture than a clean blurry one lol). I have an xt4 and did a photoshoot at a gym the other day and used ISO 12800 for a couple of pics and was really impressed how clean the pics turned out. So shoot away and enjoy the moment!

Also turn on BOOST mode, the focus improves a lot (yes, battery will drain a bit faster but who cares lol) and set to focus mode C and focus zone AREA (the biggest of the 3). hope this can be helpful.

@@Reggiebphoto I think many of us enthusiast and wanna be pro photographers underestimate what it takes to do what you do as pro wedding photographer. I’d like to see a video that summarizes the wedding day prep you go through, and the the day itself, plus the post work. I can only imagine the sheer effort involved. I’m sure it would be an eye opener.

@@Reggiebphoto within a 20-25 min video, I would divide it into 3 sections. 1) pre wedding prep, scoping out location(s) with possible shots in mind, good versus poor weather locations. 2) day of wedding with extra focus on the shots from the prep locations. 3) post wedding processing of the images from the prep locations, out of camera versus final images for the clients.
