LYRICS:
I just want some girl to love me back
Tell me I’m her only
And take away the lonely
This deep love in my heart
Can’t got to waste
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get loved back by a girl
I just want some girl to talk to me
And tell me that I’m different
Or say that I’m same
I don’t care what she thinks
Just think of me
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get talked to by a girl
This is what I want
This is what I need
If I ask real nice
Will you give her to me
If I just say please
This is what I need
But if I can’t have that
Well then at least
I just want some girl to look my way
And see that I am better than the others
That I matter
In her life I want to be a friend
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get noticed by a girl
In this great world
We just plan to live
But you can’t plan love
Love’s from above
And if I do have a choice
I’ll just put one foot in front of the other
I’ll say one word after another
In my voice
If I have a choice
I just want some girl beneath my feet
To tell me I’m her king
And then beg me for a ring
And I want her to be afraid of me
And think that I might leave her
And that I will not believe her
When she says that she loves
and cares for me
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get worshipped by a girl
In this great world
We just plan to live
But you can’t plan love
Love’s from above
This is what I want
This is what I need
If I ask real nice
Will you give her to me
If I just say please
This is what I need
But if I can’t have that
Well then at least
This is what I want
This is what I say
And this is what I pray

It’s amazing how she flips it on us. I was so heartbroken by his pleas for just one to love. Then I realized he’s emotionally damaged and toxic. Wow. It happens so often when you find out about people below their surface that looks innocent and kind. You realize they’re really toxic and they just hid it. God she’s a great storyteller.

I think these lyrics are perhaps personal, and you relay your own feelings onto them. That's great though, that's what the basis of all the great lyrics entail, being identifiable to the listener. So maybe you're wrong, but it doesn't matter because this song is about you, whoever listens to it. In the end it doesn't matter who's right or wrong anyway, everyone has their own way. And none of you can be wrong in that sense.

Man, this is simply INCREDIBLE. At first I was like, "Wow, at last a song about how us men can feel vulnerable in our longing for love". Then as the song progressed, I started getting this very weird feeling, until it became clear that this was about some toxic incel. Regina managed to illustrate in four minutes how a simple, normal human need can grow into hatred when it's not answered. The video helps to notice this progression, of course...still, this is so brilliant and non-unidimensional, like all complex things in life.

Yah I think it's also abt how male are conditioned to feel a sense of entitlement bc u see some of the toxicity near the beginning I mean asking to God to get looked at by a girl is cute but it's also odd and I think the song illustrates that
@dbennettfreeling
@dbennettfreeling 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that vulnerability and desire are both at the heart of the song. The unanswered desire seems like a feeling some men refuse to accept. But isn't it inevitable to have things we want, can't have and thus an opportunity to find our boundaries which respekt those we touch?

@@emmytweetie2177 It should too be considered that there are a lot of men who convince themselves that relationships with women are _the only thing_ that could ever make them happy (this is what I want, this is what I *need*), and instead of trying to find happiness outside of that, they simmer in resentment, convince themselves it is women's fault they aren't happy. But there is also a _lot_ of misogyny and entitlement and sexism wrapped up with that.

To be fair, I think this should be regarded as an analysis of some part of the human psyche, this in not an exlusive male oder female problem imho. I can only listen to this as a "funny" song, which (of course) it is not, but then it is easier to handle... I just recognized not too long ago that i can handle the "graphic violent, shocking" stuff better, than this lowkey, creepy songwriting which seems "harmless", but leaves you with a very scary impression. The only thing I would criticize (besides that this could be viewed as a "man-only"-Problem in times of "gender-wars" and so on...) that it only points the finger at the problem, but it leaves you with no real advises. But maybe, of course, it is our job think it through. Nethertheless great song. Great Record in total. Regina is a great artist. (hope my english is good enough) Edit: Some say this has a dark turn. To me, the turn is strong because of the atmosphere of the song and the sound of the melody, which gives you a wrong impression at first, but if we look closer there were are few hints that this could be about a toxic or a delusional guy in the first stanza. Or you could call it a psychopath, as it seems, with all this weird twisted religious motives. So to me it was quite dark from the beginning... :)

I was already like, "what the hell? Regina, are you okay" then I remembered that this woman never sang from her individual point of view/perspective. Either she's blending tangled but powerful emotions with a million different references, or she's already completely immersed in one character's perspective, for good, for bad, and, almost always, for this giant gray area that embraces it all, the full spectrum of human actions, thoughts or feelings. Oh, how I love this woman.

😅 Oh she had me terrified for a second there, and then I realized that too. Otherwise, Regina wouldn't have songs like Braille, Love Affair, Buildings and so much more, including Rowboats. I think she's a real writer, she has all these lives living inside her, and so much empathy to feel all those scenes. She certainly voices so many inner thoughts that we all feel. Glad I'm not the only one with that reaction though -- much love to Regina ( ;

This whole album is incredible lyrically, I'm utterly in awe. I've been a fan since my teens, and I'm in my 30s now, so I feel like I've grown up with Regina, and she's not yet released a song I haven't loved. This one is so hard to listen to though, for the content and the uneasiness, but just... wow. What a poet.

i love this song so much so here's my take: i love how it starts innocent enough both lyrically and visually; it's a man's naïve desire for love. the images used are unaltered and upbeat. in the final verses, we see the man's true nature. the background photos are eviction notices and past due notices, and the foreground photos are scribbled over and burnt, representing his true desire and motivation; he's not just an innocent, romantic guy, and there's a reason that he can't find love. he's an "incel" or a "niceguy" with a warped view of women and romance, and is unwilling to improve himself or reevaluate his opinions/worldview. this song isn't in favor or pity of him, it's a warning about and harsh criticism of men with this mindset. it's also a damn masterpiece

some of the synth-y bits near the ends give me "Dance Anthem of the 80s" vibes, which is an interesting juxtaposition, the sweet innocence of highschool kids longing for romance, almost like this song is trying to capture that sort of cute, playful, and ultimately harmless longing, when the lyrics paint the twisted reality of One Man's mind.
@stipezege9520

Worst take ever, like literal garbage. The whole point of the song is the progression he has from the one "naive desire" (because god forbid he fulfills his literal secondary biological neccesity). In a system rigged against him. Because of the inequality between men and women where women have the "upper hand"(women get the question will the man pay or we split? How about the woman pays?) Or another example is how when guys are perpetually nice to girls in order to find one they constantly getrejected and become "nice guys" but when women are nice to everybody people say shes looking for attention and many guys think its their time to find a mate(for example waitresses working for tips). The whole point of this song is that he cant have what he NEEDS, and that drives him antisocial. Obviously its a dig against patriarchal society and incels but thats not a brave song to make. Ouuu lets gang up on the incels guys! How can you say its a masterpiece when by your words all she does is poetically curbstomp some virgins

When I started it was really cute, I thought it could be a wedding song 😅 But even at the start with “tell me that I’m different or the same. I don’t care what she thinks just think of me…” is kind of foreboding and foreshadowing. It’s a beautiful media showing depth and how that human desire for romance can turn twisted. At first, it’s pleading then insisting then belligerent, I love the flow! The visuals 😍 retro pinup collage, as a lyric video can compete with the best music videos out there. Been listening to this album on repeat. Love ❤️ love 💕 Regina for over half my life (33), and she got me through some really tough times. My first songs were Fidelity, Hide and Seek, Us, Samson, Après Moi, and Eet. So glad to hear new music always. 🌺💐✨

I listened to this the first time (my first go through the album) laying down with my eyes closed. at the beginning I was like...ooh that's so sweet and gay (didn't read the title, because I was just enjoying the music), I like it! so romantic and cute! I've felt that feeling before, "if I won't get to meet god, and I won't get to be a god, then god let me be noticed by a girl" that's such a clever line! love it! and then "I just want some girl beneath my feet", and it was like I woke up. it was reality snapping back into place. at first confusing, then this aha moment. all the previous lyrics were warning signs. I knew what the song was really about. WOW, regina! fantastic as always!

This song is hard to hear and so importantly honest. It reflects the dark ways that a romantic thought can turn. Parts of it are beautifully innocent and are only asking for the human connection that we all need to survive, that connection that keeps our souls healthy and understanding. Men's mental health struggles are often ignored, by themselves and others, until they fester into a deep hatred, but I want to believe we're getting better. I'm strongly reminded of Notes from Underground, another important piece of media to understand how the male mindset can be harmful to itself and others in the search for companionship. And that book is like 150 years old, still holds up a mirror to modern masculinity.
@mikeciul8599
@mikeciul8599 Жыл бұрын
I recently heard an interview with Harriet Fraad and she said something that really resonated with me. She said masculinity is defined as a negative: masculine is that which is not feminine. This is a problem! If gentleness, beauty, vulnerability, caregiving, and emotional connection are defined as feminine, then they can't be masculine. And everybody has those qualities in some amount, and everybody needs to embrace them to be healthy. Feminism did some great things, including the expanding the range of female identity. But in that context, maintaining the definition of masculinity as "not feminine" causes male identity to shrink. If we continue to define masculinity as "not feminine," the only thing left for those who want to identify as "real men" will be to become mass murderers. I do think this idea of masculinity is finally changing. But it's left its scars on so many people, of all genders.

As a virgin who's never been loved and is turning 30 in a few weeks... this song captivates a lot of the things I'm feeling very well. Don't we all!! As an early twenty something with old values, high ambitions, and interests, who's never dated nor liked another person at that level -- likely to also be a thirty year old virgin, I feel that. It wouldn't be so awful if it weren't for the fact that it isn't a matter of choice, it's like everything I've ever asked of life from my innocent youth has been fairly shot down ( all the answers; stability; happiness; control...) and now on the last levels, just wanting another person, a friend, someone on my team, that's also been a NO too. If I found people I liked in that way, it would be okay, but I can't even have that. I find hope every other day though and I find, even on my rotted sour edges, I have so much love for everything that can't be denied. One of my examples for hope I have a friend who's forty and she didn't lose her virginity till 30, with her love.

Watching her music videos and amazing performances on KZbin, seeing all the admiration of the live audience and in the comments. It was sad to discover that there had been a huge fan army mostly around 2005-2010 and I kind of missed that train. Oh I wish she was as popular nowadays. And instead of explaining people who is Regina Spektor I would discuss her art with them and travel to see her show together. I’ve listened many music genres and artists, but still nothing hits me the same way her music does.

Such an upbeat song, that you wouldn't expect it to be about violent misogyny. But unfortunately she hits the nail on the head with these men. Ladies, female separatism now!

🔥 Wow. I was frustrated at first... those are all ideals, not women who have independent thoughts and flaws and abilities. Tired of the men who see us that way; it makes us an easy target for abuse later on.

at first I thought "why is it so prevalent to sing songs from a shitty man perspective" but then i realized it is a counterpart song to SugarMan; a girl wants to be loved, but angrily asserts that if life wont give her love, she will take money (sugar) . A boy wants to be loved, but he feels he isn't given enough, so he says "whatever, love or fear" The difference is that the girl bitterly admits that sugar is not really love, but for the boy the violence fantasy is intoxicating enough he doesn't see the difference anymore. Then the girl thinks this is her\ her mom's fault, , but the boy will blame a woman for not giving him what he needs... And these people don't get stuck with people who fall in love with them; they have much higher chance to meet each other, because their views are, ironically, compatible.

I love how most of the background, besides the pictures of women, is formed out of tickets/receipts/checks/postages the guy probably tried to ask women out with or tried to send letters to. And he thinks they were just using him when in reality his shity personality is the reason he never had a girlfriend or got a second date with the same woman. By the end, the background turns into bills and eviction notices bc he spend all his money on those things, and his determination becomes clearly an obsession to us, the viewer. Also, he probably has a gambling addiction because we can see numerous cards and dices in the video. The song is called "One man's pray",but at the end, everything is on fire and we usually associate fire with hell

regina i'm scared i'm still gonna listen to the whole album, even though i am clear on the apparent lyrical themes of the album, and i'm scared (I'm mostly scared because I know she knows exactly what she's doing and how to do it to perfection)

Hard hitting song. Starts off tame enough but I feel it that it's going to dig deep into me. Tackle the things that I struggle with and torture myself frequently about. lol. You sing so many songs that couldn't possibly be about me but yet I am like-- yeah... you know...

Awesome song! Somehow musically it resembles some Roxette songs especially when the strings appear in the final of the song. Yes, my associations can be strange, but still.

Funny how so many comments zero in on the fact that these are a man's thoughts, as if only a man would think that. It's not only about a romantic relationship, It's not even necessarily a total villain, It's generally about how we come to hate the ones we were too afraid to win over with kindness and confidence.

does any man really expect a woman to love him back though? the most we can realistically ask for is to be tolerated and settled for.
