Күн бұрын

A few weeks ago I had a secret meeting in a stairwell and we shot this little video for The Trapper and The Furrier.
With all that is going on I wanted to share it. Good luck to us all. Good luck to our world. There are many kinds of paradise...Let's be on the side of those in need. Let's be on the side of those who love. Let's be on the side of those who care, who participate, who try... And if not all that, then at least, let's be on the side of those who pay their taxes;-)
Directed by Jack Dishel (in a stairwell)
Shot by Shervin Lainez (also in a stairwell)
Animated by Chris Tucci (luckily not in a stairwell at all!)
Regina Spektor, on tour this spring! Dates at reginaspektor.com

Lyrics:
The trapper and the furrier
Went walking through paradise
And all the animals lay clawless
And toothless before them
And all the mothers stepped away from their babies
Leaving them open and easy to handle
The trapper and the furrier
Went walking through paradise
They took some for now
And they got some for later
And they marveled at the pelts,
Not a bullet-hole in ’em
And they filled up the cages
With pets for their children
What a strange, strange world we live in
Where the good are damned
And the wicked forgiven
What a strange, strange world we live in
Those who don’t have, lose
Those who got, get given
More, more, more, more. . .
The owner and the manager
Went walking through paradise
And all the shelves were filled
With awards and achievements
And on every corner a power presentation
And on every floor an army of workers
The owner and the manager
Went walking through paradise
And all their charts showed
So much promise and progress
No sick days, no snow days, no unions, no taxes
And they wandered towards home,
Kings of their castles
What a strange, strange world we live in
Where the good are damned
And the wicked forgiven
What a strange, strange world we live in
Those who don’t have, lose
Those who got, get given
More, more, more, more. . .
The lawyer and the pharmacist
Went walking through paradise
And all the sick were around them
With fevers unbreaking
Crying and bleeding and coughing and shaking
And arms outstretched, prescription collecting
The lawyer and the pharmacist
Went walking through paradise
Pressed suits in the courtroom
Aroma of chloroform
And they smiled at the judge,
Dispositions so sunny
’cause they didn’t have the cure but sure needed the money
What a strange, strange world we live in
Where the good are damned
And the wicked forgiven
What a strange, strange world we live in
Those who don’t have, lose
Those who got, get given

If it's meaning in songs you like, also listen to Deborah Van Kleef, John McCutcheon, Buffy Sainte Marie - basically all the great singer/song writers who no one listens to. Deborah even has a song named "Sing me a song with Social Signifgance" . : ) Charlie King is really good too!

Wow. The only word possible. This is the first ever comment I have posted on KZbin in 10 years (I am usually a passive and mildly-amused observer) Your talent and insight is incredible and jaw-dropping. You are one of the most important artists I have ever heard. My heart goes out to you and I really want to salute your bravery, unashamed courage of conviction, clarity, confidence, direct self-expression and undeniable, unshakeable musical talent... I want to recognise, commend and applaud you for being the person you are, sharing your talent and musical/artistic ability with us all. Thank you.

Но огромная благодарность таким людям как Регина проникает внутрь меня и светится наружу. this song feels more relevant than ever now in the world. but remember that life is not a series of inescapable evil events. it's not a "strange world we live in where the good are damned and the wicked forgiven" in the sense that not everything is out of our control. we have the ability to act, to decide to love, to decide to fight for what's right and good. there will always be people willing to hurt others for their own benefit but there will also always be people who choose to sacrifice for the good of others. don't give up. don't believe "that's just the way it is". you have power. you can make a difference no matter how small. when many millions of people add together their tiny offerings of love the world gets better. Have faith in love, hope, and goodness. It's worth it.

Well, the fact that there is so much suffering and so much to do but yet we spend time watching videos and writting coments on them is not much of a good start, won't you agree? Humans are so fucked up. For every good there are 20 evils. And little by little we will find owr doom.
@fizzlyTV
@fizzlyTV 8 жыл бұрын
i disagree actually, i think writing hopeful, motivating comments IS a good start. A start only, but something. I stand by what I said: "when many millions of people add together their tiny offerings of love the world gets better". How do you make the world better by giving up? You may be right, maybe there will be 20 evils for every good, but to match your goodness against even one of them is a noble act that makes the world a tiny bit better for everyone.

Seeing this song performed live was an absolute delight. Regina sang it with so much passion, and that was the first time I heard this song, so naturally I was blown away. At the end, she took a deep breath and said “sorry, sometimes my own songs get me so fucking angry” so you know she meant every word she sang 100%. Needless to say, this is now my favorite song!

The lyrics in this song are great (she's an excellent lyricist), and the dissonant extended-technique string accompaniment and the Dorian mode melodic line are interesting, but the thing that sticks out to me about it are the subtle meter changes. The chorus consists of four phrases. The first three have a seven-beat pulse in compound duple meter - || 6/8 | 3/8 | 6/8 | 6/8 ||. The fourth is then an extended five-bar phrase of 6/8. The second verse (starting at 1:27) is also interesting. All the verses feature typical quadratic phrase grouping, but the first and third verse consist of four-bar phrases of 6/8, whereas the second verse has three-bar phrases.

I just got the CD today (I like having hard copies of my favorite people) and I love the directions it goes in. It feels honest and weird in a natural way, kind of like the Soviet Kitsch and Begin to Hope days. I'm relieved. The strings and other instruments all create a distinct atmosphere for each song, and it doesn't feel over-produced. I needed this.

Yes. I think also in a way it's about how humans mistreating animals (first verse) opened the door to humans mistreating each other. It's saying animal cruelty is at the root of social injustice.

I gess it's an amazingly beautifull description of some of the most hideous manifestations of human nature, just brilliantly done! Still one glaringly important subject is missing - I wish Regina would have included a verse about the POLITICIAN AND THE BANKER.
