Some part of inspiration for this was a friend of Regina, who is physicist, who said that physicists turn to philosophy when they reach an end (or a dead end). (Not verbatim). This I believe is found in the line "Each time a theory proves, the mystery just moves". Regina said this in an interview and I just wanted to share.

This song sums up Regina's music so well. It's dreamy, sweet, curious and creative, but also so focused on the musing of time, love, fear and death. The orchestration is breathtaking, her voice so free... it's just so moving it brings me to tears

"My mind is full of melodies/They search for homes inside of me" harkens back to Fidelity for me. I love those lyrical threads and ideas that seem to tie together and recur throughout her career, it brings me joy and nostalgia as a longtime fan.

I think those lines are one of the few times Regina's actual personality goes into the piece, otherwise she never does it from her perspective it seems, it's always another character being released. Most of her songs have either a line that's just her as she realizes one or a vocal moment that's just her playing and expanding her freedom in song.

Woah, I saw her on Broadway almost exactly 3 years ago to the day (June 20, 2019) and she actually performed this song at the show! I know that it's not uncommon for artists to perform unreleased songs at their concerts, but I thought it was a great performance. I've thought about the song a couple times since then, it's cool to see it released.
@davidbjacobs35982 жыл бұрын
Same here! (Not sure if I was there that day or a different day.) I remember her saying it was a new song she'd just written, and the performance was powerful and moving. I've been waiting since then to be able to hear it again, and so happy to finally have it on an album. Excited to see her again next month.

Such a fabulous, ruminative, thoughtful and wonderfully long song. "The pages may have burned, but words can just return" hearkens back to Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita", a provocative philosophical romp that has a sci-fi edge to it. I love the orchestral elements and the tone shifts and changes. It's a mix of riding in an old Soyuz capsule, ending up in on the holodeck of the Enterprise for a jazz and tapdance number, and then somehow finding yourself standing on an oceanside pier asking someone where you are, and they say, "well, Yalta..." And you have to get money from Rimsky to get back to the Variety Theater...

Listening to this in the car last night, I was getting tailgated on the highway by someone with their brights on (which always freaks me out). I fell out of touch with RS's music after Far, still listen to everything up to then an awful lot and love playing along to it. My grandad, who I introduced to her music (and has impeccable taste in music, no matter how 'modern'), told me she had a cracking tune out years ago that I never followed up on, and hearing this I know I've been remiss! Getting Joe Hisaishi vibes in parts, as well as that wonderful 'dangerous, evil' vibe that she occasionally springs on you (6:55). It reminded me of Galadriel's ring temptation scene in LOTR: "Instead of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair!" Not gonna lie, I would quickly bend the knee if Regina (heh, funny coincidence in name) gained absolute power through some dark magic. Paycheck's coming through soon, I guess I'll be eating beans and rice for the month after spending the rest on albums to catch up on ;/
