Registered Dietitian Q&A (Finding a Job, Debt, Master's Programs, ect)
TIME STAMPS:
0:33 Did you work throughout undergrad?
0:59 Do you think it's beneficial to the internship application to have a job while in school?
1:49 Is it easy to find a job in nutrition/dietetics in the US?
3:05 I am really interested in becoming a dietitian; however, I am scared of having debt. I do research on it constantly, and it is said that within a few years, dietitians will need to have a Master's degree, and they only get paid $18-$30...
6:09 Would it be okay to take my Master's program online?
6:27 Could you talk more about the difficulties we might encounter finding jobs and internships?

Just seeing this 3 years later and Im in my final year of my Masters and doing DICAS now. I am happy to say due to new licensing and education laws/requirements that most places in jersey in clinicals start in the range of 28 to 35$ an hour for dietitians with masters right out of school. We are definitely coming a long way and will be getting the pay we deserve. Especially in another few years !

The RD's I have shadowed were salaried and worked well over 40 hours a week. They also came in later in the day to teach classes. However, it is flexible if you have a family. The dietitian I interviewed made $105k a year but she had been working 25 years and she also took on admin responsibilities as well as oversaw other RD's schedules. The other dietitian in the same clinic had her Master's and said it was very hard to find work that paid over $20/hr. She told me to go the RN route. The RN CDE I interviewed only dealt with Diabetics not other nutritional cases. She made probably $40+ an hour and also had experience in industry (selling insulin pumps) so that made her more lucrative to the clinic. This is all in the Seattle area. Now across the state in Spokane, WA the market is saturated with grads and not enough jobs so many dietitians have to work in nursing homes. I think it just depends on what you want to get out of it at the end of the day and how you want to spend your time. Nursing school is incredibly hard and demanding. Where I feel as though dietetics seems to fit a family lifestyle more. However, nursing can also accommodate a family's schedule but most jobs in hospitals are 12hr shifts verses 8 hour shifts for RD's in clinic.

Anne Sears At the end of the day, if it's what you love, I say do it. I have found nursing is much more intensive and exposes you/your family to alot of nasty stuff. However, I do love the education in both fields. I'll probably end up teaching in one of the sectors.

So you can work as a dietician with a nurse? Missa McFadden thank you! Your information was very helpful! I talked to a RD who worked at the Loma Linda Hospital and she said don’t go into Nutrition for the money. You have to be passionate about it. Working for a hospital or a clinic that is a part of a hospital you do have to work 1 day on the weekend. I also talked to someone who worked at WIC and she LOVED it! She said that she got significantly paid more than in the hospital. She couldn’t remember how much but it was like a couple more dollars per hour. This was 12 years ago. As a girl wanting to be a mom someday, that sounded super interesting and think I would like it! The only thing is I have struggled with science in high school. Does anyone know once you are in Nutrition school and working as Nutritionist do you use all the science for the prerequisites on a day to day basis? Just wondering if I could push through the prerequisites and do ok or even like my job

My grades are no problem. I'm looking forward to my internship, I'm communicating with the right people at my current university that'll yield my DTR. The following university I want to go is D'youville in Buffalo, N.Y. (where I live.) Their program is a 2-in-1 where in five years, you get your master's in dietetics and RD at the price of an undergrad. You give a lot of insight. Thank you

I am in that situation where I have my degree in nutrition and I have worked nothing but dead end jobs. I was not accepted into an internship and I am just so discouraged to do anything in nutrition. I have thought of just getting a certificate in nutrition coaching and coach people on my own. I dont know the legality of this.. I just feel so dissapointed. My parents are disappointed. It really sucks.

This video was very helpful. But unfortunately it has convinced me that Dietetics isn't a good route for me. I already work 40 hrs a week so I can't really do more than part time school. So it would take me forever just to finish the Bachelor's, let alone an internship and a Master's AND you only start off at about $18-25/hr (depending on area and degree level). The return on investment financially just isn't worth it. Which is a shame because I know I would find it emotionally fulfilling. But fuck it. I'll just get an Associates in Biomedical Engineering Technology. At least with that I can still say I help people in hospitals but the ROI is actually sensible.

I have a question. Should I go to a school that offers a coordinated dietetics program or is a school that had a didactic dietetics program just as good? It's because I'm between going to Cal state Los Angeles or Cal state Long beach, long beach being the higher quality school but offering the didactic program while the latter offers the coordinated program.

jolly squishy cow bud I thought about that too! I didn't apply to CSULA but did apply to CSULB but I chose UC Davis. I want to get my MS combined with my internship. So I guess if you want to be a dietitian soon after college and taking the exam than CSULA would help.

mayra leon that's cool! I got into uc davis as well but didn't really take it into full consideration. So does uc davis combine the learning with the internship as well? If it does I might just attend there! 🙌☺️😃

Sadly no :( I was having a really hard time choosing between UCD and CSULB but I chose UCD because it had more clubs that I'd like to join and has a minor in exercise biology which CSULB only has a major in but I did want to go to CSULB because it was cheaper and I had connections there. The sda president at Long Beach gave me a personal tour last summer and I really enjoyed it, she said Long Beach had the benefit of having a lot of undergrad volunteer/internship opportunities because it was in LA. I live 2 hours from there so even though I enjoyed the campus I felt like I wasn't getting away from my normal life if that makes any sense.

Hi Laura, I just finished my Undergrad and am taking a couple semesters to figure out exactly what I want to go to University for. For the last couple of years I've been really interested in taking the route to become an RD and I've been watching alot of your videos lately, they're all very helpful! My question relating to this video is: when you took your internship how did you afford to live? Were you lucky enough to find a paid internship or did you have to work on the side as well? Also did you afford the move with savings? I'm just curious if there's some kind of financial aid that's available for this part of a dietetics program, as I don't know much about financial aid when it comes to anything past just community college. Thanks and keep up the good work! :)

Hi Zach!! My internship gave us a monthly stipend to life on. Working on the side is very difficulty during an internship; however I currently have an intern, who is a waitress on the weekends. It's been hard on her, but she's making it work. Otherwise, there are student loans available that will give you money to live on!

Hello, i wanted to share with you that i'll be going to the University Of Alabama's Online DPD program! I wanted to ask if you have heard of that program and have any input about it as well. Thanks for sharing your personal stories and i hope things will be easier for me once i at least finish my bachelors degree like it was for you. I have 6 years of professional cooking/food/nutrition background and also wanted to know how beneficial it is when looking for internships! Thanks again!!

Hi Wende!!! That's awesome! Congrats!! I have heard of it, for sure. It's a good one! Niceeeee your experience will definitely help you get into your internship, along with grades and GRE score. Definitely make your grades a priority and shoot for a GPA >3.2, ideally >3.5!!!!
@wende30
@wende30 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! thanks for the honest feedback! University of Alabama's DPD program is pretty strict. Its required that you get A's and B's on all the classes, and if you exceed the amount of times to retake the classes to get the required grades, you'll be dropped out of the DPD program and just become a food and nutrition major without getting a verification statement -_- Also, i'm doing my lab classes online, then starting my bachelors part time due to me having to work... i just hope i make it before the deadline in 2024 so i can get a job right after my bachelors and internship! I'm just hoping things work out!!

Yah, I understand. It sounds like they really want you to succeed, which is always a good sign. I'd recommend taking it semester by semester and not trying to think too far ahead. That's when it's easy to get overwhelmed and overly stressed, at least in my opinion :) Good luck on your journey!!!

Nice!! Thank you :) ill be taking classes part time and in the middle of my bachelors, they have an accelerated Maters program, where after you take a certain amount of bachelors classes, you can go right into your masters program, then get a verification statement and do the internship afterwards.. which is good for me since eventually i'd have to get my masters anyways and i'm willing to learn more and it in the future aswell! Hopefully, it'll make me alot more competitive for internships.. im hoping!

I’m 22 years old and I have an associates degree in general science . I’m considering completing my bachelors degree in dietetics online . Is this a good idea or would it be better to attend a university in person ? I know at a university they typically have internships available for students to apply for . So it might be difficult for me to find a place nearby willing to be my preceptor .

Can I become an RN without an undergrad degree in nutrition??
@yourveryownrd
@yourveryownrd 7 жыл бұрын
So, prior to last week I would've said no, but I've talked to a few people recently, and apparently there's new route...? Supposedly the number of internships that accept applicants who don't have an undergrad in nutrition are limited because it requires a more intense Master's program, which includes the science courses you need... Where do you live? I'd call a local college or internship near you to ask more questions. You can find one in the link below. Hope this helps! www.eatrightpro.org/resources/acend/accredited-programs/dietetic-internships

Thanks for your very helpful advice. I have a question: My fiance is an air force officer so in the future, we might have to move very often (at least every 2 years). I am considering become a RD. I want to hear your opinion about whether or not it is ideal for someone who moves frequently to work in this field. Does all the moving affect the job, or the salary or the career path?
@yourveryownrd

You've asked the right person.... Since I started my career 5 years ago, I've moved 3 times (NYC-->Chicago-->Alabama), and it has not effected by career path. I went from working outpatient in an HIV clinic to working inpatient and outpatient at a organ transplant center to working in the ICU at a hospital. My salary decreased when I moved from Chicago to Alabama, but that was due to the cost of living difference :) Hope this helps!
