Awesome video! I totally agree, especially with the bad #4, I'm not stick thin and sometimes I'll eat something that's not great for me (because I love food just as much, if not more, than the next person) and someone will say "I thought you were a dietitian". So frustrating! But I do love hanging out with other dietitians who encourage moderation and can eat both healthy and indulgent things together.

I totally agree, Melissa! They almost make you feel ashamed for eating something unhealthy. Sometimes for me, it's not even worth the comments, so I'll just eat healthy when I'm around certain people and not indulge. Kind of sad, but it's reality.

Thank you so much for this video. I have struggled with choosing a career path for such a long time, and have gone back and forth with committing to dietetics for various reasons. I have just gone back to school with the end-goal of pursuing this discipline, and this video was a great balance of pro's and con's for the field. I have also been primarily plant-based for a number of years & I look forward to watching more of your videos soon. Thanks again for the great personal experience, and encouragement.

I’m in my 40s and in second year of a Nutrition degreee. I plan to do d Masters in Dietetics. I had a totally different career prior to this. I started this journey becUsw I’ve always been overweight and struggle with it. In my 40s I started being interested in Nutrition for my own health and my family’s. Even though I’m studying, I still struggle with my eating habits. But now I’m finding that I’m making more conscious healthier choices. What you said about the society or your clients expecting you to be a certain weight is always at the back of my mind. I have a big uphill once I finish my degree but I’m gonna take one day at a time for me I guess. Thanks for vid, enjoyed it.

My dietition was blunt in the first appointment. This person just met me and is just going on about my blood test results as if we had met multiple times saying how bad it is. I just rolled my eyes and just proceeded to knowing her rather than her chattering to me about my health. Anywho, I have my second appointment with my Dietitian in two weeks, so hope all goes calm and not-in-your face because we have met the first time around. Just to share: I am a student studying for Physical Therapy school and do have my moments when I get stress carried on me and eat carelessly (drink more juice than needed or double my food portions), but once semester is over I counteract with cutting out sugary drinks. I exercises 3 to 5 times a days for 1 to 2 hours long.

Hey Jordan! Not at all. Most healthcare providers agree in the importance of consuming wholesome, plants. 25% (3 out of 12) of the interns I graduated with were plant based. During my internship/Master's was when most of us started developing our beliefs about nutrition. We respected each other's beliefs. Some were plant based, some paleo, some low carb/keto..... but all of use agreed in limiting processed foods. I did a lot of my projects on vegetarianism/veganism to help educate my classmates. Hope this helps!

When I educate pts, I focus on increasing fruit/veg, drinking more water, decreasing processed foods and increasing physical activity. By default all of my recommendations are plant-based. It all depends on the patient and their current beliefs about nutrition; however, I never promote animal products.

I feel the pressure to be thin (especially for women) is expected in almost every profession. Excess weight is often associated with laziness which typically results in negative feelings towards the person. I worked in an optometry office and my patients regularly complained to me that I shouldn't allow my overweight coworkers to work and that I should have them fired for being "disgusting." The sad part is, those coworkers were the best and most polite employees and they really weren't that overweight. Society has taught us that the ONLY way to be "healthy" is to be extremely thin -- especially for women. It is truly saddening. Nevertheless, I love your outlook on that topic. I wish more people were like you. Thanks for the great advice.

Hey Laura! I'm a senior in high school (about to graduate) and I'm planning on becoming a dietitian. I want to become registered, however I'm concerned about the new requirements coming in 2024. Right now, I'm set to graduate with a bachelors in 2021 - do you think it's possible to become registered before the new requirements are in place? If so, would I have to go back to school and get a masters once the new requirements are implemented? I don't mind the extra school, but I wanted to work for a while to pay off student loans, save up, and figure out any specifics in the field that I like before putting the money in for more school time. Thank you, your videos have helped me a lot!

Hi Bailey! I'm so glad you're interested in becoming a dietitian! So, if you get your degree before 2024, you won't be required to get your Master's.... You'll be "grandfathered in." However, since you have to do a 1200-hour internship after undergrad, a lot of the internship programs are moving to being combined (you get your internship and Master's)... and a lot of them are 12-month programs. They're intense programs, but it's an option. Hope this helps!

Hi! I’m currently exploring careers right now. :,) As of this year, is a masters degree required? I looked at bls.gov and it still says a bachelors is acceptable. Also, what type of person would suit this profession? I’m very anxious introverted but I’d like to help out people. I’d like a job where there’s time to spend with family and pursue artistic goals. I’m just looking for security and free time. Is it going to be hard to look for positions after graduating with a bachelors since the education requirement is higher now?

It’s kinda sad that people judge people for being overweight because different health conditions can cause someone to be overweight. Some people with thyroid conditions no matter how healthy they eat or exercise they might not be able to be “thin”. If your going to judge something judge unhealthy habits not an appearance.

As someone who is really interested in a healthy holistic lifestyle, i was really thinking about becoming an rd, but i know that an rd major will not cover LIFE for real , like exercise and living as a whole , which is the approach I believe in instead of recommending processed jello . But the problem with the more natural or holistic route is the certification, and that alternative medicine in general is considered "quack" but i still think is has some right to it , but its hard to choose and to be involved in this kind of dilemma between natural health advocates and dietitians and drs etc.. I believe that having a healthy lifestyle and being as close to nature as possible is the way to go to maybe help heal a lot of problems Im a high school graduate and still dont really know what i want to do, and if it is worth it, and do i want to pursue it :/ and if going into becoming and rd or for example study holistic nutrition online is the right thing to do, or maybe become a naturopath ?.. i hope you can help me if you can ❤️ thanks for the video

Hello! I see where you're coming from. Having a RD behind your name definitely gives you credibility. There are more and more dietitians who are adapting a "eat as fresh as possible" and holistic approach. When I worked in an outpatient clinic, I discussed stress, sleep and physical activity with my patients, not just food/diet. Becoming a RD gives you the knowledge and science to make your own clinical judgement. Do you like science?

I know what she means here and she just means that you can have healthy lifestyle habits at any size instead of hyperfocusing on weight but, as someone who has been both a healthy weight and significantly overweight -- by overweight i mean higher body fat, not necessarily just the scale but that makes a difference too-- it makes a huge difference in how you feel. There's no need to feel negative about your physical appearance ever and you should love yourself at every phase but at the end of the day, it will always benefit someone who is overweight (body fat overweight, because you can have a lot of heavy muscle) to lose it.

Returning to the my main premise, I want to go into research and hopefully teaching. I love making presentations for class or biology club and teaching that information to other students. It just feels so good. If I did go into research, I would probably dive into gut microbiota studies. I think I would feel more satisfied if I went into teaching.

The bad thing about nutritionists is that they don't usually really understand nutrition. They get their ideas from half educated doctors and the lying government. Ever wonder why following the average nutritionist's advice doesn't seem to work? I can't count how many times I have heard from a registered nutritionist or dietitian to eat a low fat, vegetable oil and carbohydrate based diet for optimal health. They always seem to have the same advice. Avoid saturated animal fats. Substitute heart-healthy vegetable oils for animal fats. Eat vegetable oil spread instead of butter. Don't eat eggs. Eat a low fat diet. Eat plenty of carbohydrates like breads and cereals for heart health. Sugar is OK in moderation. Take lots of supplements, and talk to your doctor about high cholesterol. If your nutritionist says things like this, RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!! Taking this advice is a one-way ticket to the morgue!

I just graduated with my bachelor’s in nutrition (dietetics). You don’t need a master’s degree to become a dietitian, but do remember you will need to complete an internship after you graduate or while you’re in school (depending on the uni you go to) to become a dietitian.

DaisyCruzxo is it possible that the rules may be different by state? Because I’ve heard so many people say that I would need a masters. I know you need the internship, but even if you do not need the masters wouldn’t it make getting jobs more competitive?

Kelly so the academy of nutrition and dietetics has been saying for years already that a master’s degree will be required soon to be a dietitian and currently they’re saying it will be required by 2024. So you will most likely need it if you go straight to college after you graduate from high school. Currently, only some jobs require you to have a master’s. It is more competitive if you have a master’s but experience is also very important in the job. You should go to the eatright.org website. This is the academy’s website and they can answer a lot of your questions!

Don't ignore facts for the sake of unneccesary empowerment and body positivity. HAES is the greatest diet trend to hit our culture in the last decade, and it's just as bad as - if not worse than - juice cleansing. One should always aim to eat within their caloric needs. Yes some days we go to parties, we drink, we eat cake. Consequentially we eat more than our body needs that day. Not a big deal. But consistently eating more calories than you need is NOT HEALTHY for many reasons relating to the dangers of gaining fat and being overweight/obese, eating too frequently, damaging hunger cues and more. Please do not promote HAES as a dietician. I understand the need to tackle diet culture, but diet culture is not remedied by promoting "body positive" eating behaviour based on incorrect information.

im thinking about going into the program for dietitian. but there's a lot of chemistry and not my strongest subject. I used to eat plant based but I was losing too much weight and such.

It is a lot of chemistry, but if you enjoy it, then you'll get through it!!! Do you like other sciences, like biology or anatomy?
