Registering A New Battery On Your BMW - All Models Around 2002 Onwards.

In this video I needed to replace my failing battery and thought it would be a good idea to show you the process by which I register the battery to the DME on the car.
To do this I use ISTA-D which can do many things including full diagnostics.

Interesting indeed. In fact I'm not sure whether I'm more surprised by the fact that such a battery registration procedure is a thing or that a smart charging function which is design to tune the charging operation basing on the battery age is not smart enough to check it by its own (e.g.: comparing the difference between the nominal battery capacity vs. actual battery capacity).

I get your meaning, I can only make an assumption that an automatic system that can detect a new battery could be fooled by an old battery that has been removed from the car to be charged perhaps! 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@KevsShed I understand the specific case you're considering and in fact the kind of check/tune "nominal Vs. current" I would have implemented is "per-cycle", e.g.: every start-up, every given driving milage/hours, etc. in order to constantly monitor the battery degradation. In such way that even the case of an old battery charged outside of the car and reinstalled would probably return to an aged state quite soon and the capacity monitoring system would recognise a high rate of degradation and rapidly adapt accordingly. This principle would fail in case of the age based registration method if an old battery is used after an external charge operation and registered right after. In case the question might be: what if I install a battery with a different nominal capacity in respect of the factory one, which the system is instructed for? Well, just assume you install a battery that is at least of the factory nominal capacity (the most logical assumption) or let the user set a different value via a dash/computer config.

@@Mattiu75 You are correct of course! If a battery of differing values, ie. CCA or AH is fitted the the car needs to be programmed as such otherwise the optimal charging rate will not be achieved, this includes different battery types such as lead-acid, AGM and such. This programming is done with a different program to the one that I use in the video and is called ISTA-P, I have that program however, I used a like for like battery in my exchange.

Thanks for another great video. I once had the battery replaced in my 2008 3 series by a specialist BMW garage* and he didn't know you had to code the battery! Also interesting to see how bad the BMW software, I much prefer the Volvo VIDA interface. *Only got them to replace the battery as at the time he could get the battery at a better price than I could.

Remember having to do this on my 320LCI ... The biggest pain was getting the program to work on a virtual XP server ... LOL...

It can be a bit of a pain to setup but once you get it working right, it’s a very powerful suite of software! I also have another laptop with INPA installed on it too! 👌🏻

You only need to register the battery if you have IBS. If i am not mistaken models 2006 and below dont have IBS. You also did not mention the coding part. Was there a change in AH ?

You are mistaken! The car in the video is a 2005, all E65 models, even pre-facelift had IBS. The battery fitted in the video was identical to the one removed, therefore no coding required, just registration.

Coding a different battery must be done in ISTA-P, if I remember correctly it pops up a message in ISTA-D with this advice when you carry out the registration process.
