Hear Dr. Stone explain how a collagen meniscus implant can help regrow or repair a meniscus, (the knee's shock absorber) with a Collagen Meniscus Implant (CMI). The CMI is a biological device made of highly purified collagen, which is designed to promote a self-healing process by acting as a trellis for new meniscus tissue to grow into, reconstructing missing segments of the meniscus shape.
In fact, the Collagen Meniscus Implant is not so new. Kevin R. Stone, of The Stone Clinic in San Francisco, invented it in 1986. It was the world’s first orthopedic tissue regeneration template and it was tested extensively in animals and people, and found to be safe and effective. A private company ultimately developed the device and conducted further trials, gaining Europe’s CE mark of approval in 2000. It has been available in Europe ever since, with over 4000 procedures performed. It was briefly available in the USA (2008 - 2010) but a dispute with the FDA has meant that the implant has been off the market for almost 5 years. This dispute has just been resolved and the CMI is once again available to people in the USA. Read more on our blog. www.stoneclinic...

There is not a new company manufacturing collagen meniscus implant surgical devices. Stone Research Foundation is exploring new, enhanced versions of the collagen meniscus implant. You can keep up with their progress by signing up for their newsletter here www.stoneresearch.org/contact

@@zanngoc ha ha. you're very right. not sure what they were doing 8 years ago, but you are in the right place. No new updates on the Collagen Meniscus Implant. It has been discontinued by the manufacturer. So this is currently unavailable, but the Stone Research Foundation still has an eye on meniscus scaffolds for future projects to reintroduce this implant even better. Thanks for watching.

YES! This is what I've been looking for. I went to the clinic, and was really impressed. But I wondered why they didn't recommend something like this. Now I know! And he invented it! Very cool. On my way to ask them now...

@@stevennacar4972 Did an MRI there a long time ago. He recommended a partial knee replacement. No thanks. Not for me. I guess our corporation-controlled FDA had taken it off the market, despite its success in Europe (where you need to go for cutting-edge medicine, in any case). Now, the money is no longer there for something insurance won't cover.

@@adarsh5343 Go to chiropractor and ask for the "traction maneuver". They grab your ankle, yank your leg, and jiggle it a bit. Had doctors offered it to me, it *might* have allowed my flap of cartilage to slip back into place. Worth trying for a couple of months, anyway. Not much to lose. They clipped out the flap, and I've been *decades* recovering *partial* use of the knee...

Lateral CMI implantation for partial lateral meniscal defects provided good long-term results, with a 10-year survival rate of 85% and a 14-year survival rate of 64%. At the final follow-up, 58% of the patients had “good” or “excellent” Lysholm scores. However, there was a general decrease in outcome scores between the short- and the long-term follow-up
