A new battery, spark plugs, and fuel pump later she runs like new. 140k miles, all working electronics, barely any rust, and MINT interior. It's the most fun I've ever had driving a car. I love the feeling without power steering in the MR2 so much I still feel every car should feel that way. My daily is an 87 Mirage without power steering and it's great but just a bit too heavy when parking. The MR2 feels a bit lighter but you can still feel everything. It's perfect.

Have an 88 MR2 and it is the best car I have ever owned. Out of all the other sports cars I've had, this one always took the cake. Brings a smile to the face just to see it in the garage and makes me as giddy as school girl to drive it. You don't seem the much anymore, specially rust free or all original (or as close as it can be) so you get people doing the double take all the time.
@BlueJDMMR28 жыл бұрын
I've owned 2 of these cars as well as 2 SW20 MR2 Turbos. Just because a car isn't fast, doesn't make it not an absolute PLEASURE to drive. I recall my days of driving an AW11 and I've owned 6 sports cars in my time and it was easily one of the most pleasurable driving experiences I ever had. I mean that thing could TOODLE around town like no other One other thing, you have to experience it to understand it, but the smell of those 1980's sportscars I owned were like a pheromone to my senses as I blazed down windy country rural roads in a then close to 30 year old sportscar. Fuck New Car smell, the scent of my AW11 MR2 was pleasing to my senses.

Excuse me sir but, may I ask a question regarding your experience with the car you owned?
@tooljst810 жыл бұрын
My 1988 AW11 had 87k on the clock when I rescued it 5 years ago from sitting in a junk lot in a state of perpetual decay. I became its second owner. After replacing many, many parts that were all factory originals, showing a testament to the quality put into this little car, it has become reliable and my daily driver for the last five years. It takes all the abuse I can dish out upon it, just as it was designed to do. It will continue to do so for many more years to come, at least as long as I have anything to say about it. Over 25 years old and still holding up strong. A great and helpful community follows these cars, this engine, this experience. It is a simple pleasure to drive everyday, everywhere... anywhere. If everyone on Earth had this car, it would be a much happier place. Not a car to own unless you have the means to repair and care for it. A car some repair shops wouldn't touch and they honestly shouldn't touch, Toyota's own mechanics wouldn't know the certain procedures needed for certain systems in the car. The intricacies of the cooling system alone has doomed more than one unready owner. My own two hands, blood, sweat and tears go into every part of this car. My go-kart, my childhood favorite, my MR2 Mk1. Thank you for making this video. Seriously, thank you.
@RegularCars10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for liking it! If RCR becomes self-sustaining...maybe even profitable...or leads to real jobs for The Roman and I...a Mk1 MR2 will be in my future. I want to save one, care for it, preserve it. All the affable VHS moments of the 80's still shine in the AW11. Even though I was only five years old in 1986, this weird wedge was super glued in my memory.
@tooljst810 жыл бұрын
The affordability are reliability are the best parts. You don't need to invest much compared to other vehicles to make it a good example of a weekend car or even a daily. Just as long as "you" repair it correctly. I can drive the car every single day, even if just a few miles, and never lose interest. I can't say that for any of the dozen different cars I have owned in the past. When this one is finally to the point of no longer being repaired, I will find another and start again. Even if it becomes a second car, it will remain the first car. If I could own two, I would...

She's burning oil, the altenators going bad... and some other minor cosmetic stuff. That engine is giving up on life. But it's 34 years old so whatever. She's still a beast of a car. Just needs a little loving. And it is almost rust free. The only thing rusted are some of the trunk screws lol.

This was back in the day when Toyotas actually had a buzz of excitement about them. Oh, what a feeling, right? The future was extinguished by the mid/late-90's when they discontinued the Supra and started focusing on a fleet of cars that gave Chevrolet a run for their money in terms of being snoozefests on wheels.
@LinusScrubTips10 жыл бұрын
What about the FT86 and FT1? They seem pretty exciting to me lol.
@MaestroTJS10 жыл бұрын
team0blackmanner Are you referring to the FRS? Yes, it's an exciting car but you have to admit it's been a long time since they had something like that, and, in any case, it is a rather small effort. It also was mostly engineered by Subaru; the styling was done by Toyota. It's not that Toyota can't make exciting cars (Lexus LFA!), it's just that they choose to be half-assed about things lately. Even their boring cars (Camry, Corolla, Yaris) have not been as good at being boring cars over the past decade.
@SPEEDTRIBESAKURA10 жыл бұрын
Their last great attempt before the GT86/FR-S (and BRZ...) was the MR-S (MR2 Spider) and Celica 7th Gen. The things they did wrong however were the problem...Celica had nice power and balance but had to be FWD... And the MR-S was trying to be the AW11, but it failed at that. Don't get me wrong the two cars were great but they just weren't good enough which is why sales slowed. If they were better we'd still be seeing 2014 Celicas and MR2s along with the FR-S/GT86...

My mum had an '87 MR-2. It was supercharged, had the T-bone roof, and the electric windows closed when you locked it from outside! Great review! My parents bought one new in 86 and I received it as a hand me down during my high school career in the 90's. I had lots of fun in the car and even put some sweet OZ rims on it. Fast forward 15 years later I had the need for another mister 2. I decided to try and find a mint example but they're few and far between. I finally found a clean 85 MR2 with 80k miles that is extremely solid (very little rust) and I have been smiling like a kid all over again. As a car enthusiast who also has a DB9, 944 Turbo, and 928, the MR2 just has this special feeling that the others do not. Fabulous cars and sure to be collectors...

Rust actually doesn't mostly come from rain. it comes from the salt that they put on the streets in a lot of states in America (Especially east coast and thereabout), So living in Washington you would think all our cars are rust buckets cause rain but actually it's not that bad. there are plenty of 70s and 80s cars puttering around rust-free.

I have owned all the MR2's and they were all great in their own way. I had this model in white, super cool car for it's day...yeah still cool but even better back then. Really futuristic looking compared to what was on the road at the time. The thing was able to break into a controlled drift really easy, something the later cars lacked. Second and third were a ball to play around with. Scary when you pushed it hard but highly rewarding when you got it right. That is something all the 2's have and I think it is what makes owners fall in love with them. That feeling of always being on the edge is intoxicating. They aren't the most powerful cars in a straight but that danger element mentioned above more than makes up for it. Simply put they are fun as hell.

Not a Lotus X100 (X100 was ment to be front engine rear drive).. MR2/AW11 is not a Lotus at all, it's all Corolla bits & custom. In fact Lotus didn't even build cars with such suspensions or frames as the MR2. Lotus was however working with Toyota on the newer Supra at the time, and that car did get the Lotus tuned double wishbone suspension. According to Lotus themselves all they did was being cars over for Toyota to compare but ultimately Toyota went their own route with the MR2.

I've owned 3 aw11s, one was supercharged. They are such sweet cars. Easy, simple, light, communicative, cheap...I love them. I currently own a mr2 spyder as well. If you haven't driven an mr2, you'll never understand the feeling. And once you experience a mr2, anything short of a supercar will leave you feeling disappointed.

I have a 88SC and out of the 12 cars I've owned through out my life this is the most fun to drive... Took it to Willow Springs Raceway ( first time ever on a real track ) and could not believe how well it handles in the turns... Dunlop Direzza ZII tires work very well :)

Better then the Fiero.

Ah. I love having one of these. And all my friends that have drove mine say it is just special. Its fun in a way they cant describe. And every time I drive it I cant help but feel happy. Its like every kids dream of owning and driving a lambo diablo. But smaller and more affordable
@joselozano052810 жыл бұрын
Dude the mr2s are faster then the fiero thats why Pontiac put v6s in them well the mr2 stayed a 4cl & the fieros rust like no other.
@joselozano052810 жыл бұрын
I seen 3 of these in junk yards, all with rust behind those panels, & there still slow.

Im a shite driver, but felt I had complete control of my AW11, I've lost it a few times but always got it straight again. I bought it in 2012 and put 40k miles on it. It is the only car that has made feel completely happy.

Its too bad Toyota stopped making the MR2...or any sports cars. At least they have the Toyobaru now.

Just wish it wasn't so slow.

The FRS isn't slow, but its not fast either and I would very much welcome a turbocharged version that Toyota is too afraid to release.
@iDeviceMoDifications10 жыл бұрын
Adam S Yeah, I like the FRS but I just couldn't see my self driving a car with 200 HP so i bought a Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track instead. The BRZ STI will be nice but still not fast enough for me.
@blatz6610 жыл бұрын
Adam S please take one of these cars out to some very twisty country roads and then come back and give us hands on statements about speed.
@Dolby10910 жыл бұрын
peter graves Being easy to handle at the limit and being fast are different things. The FRS/BRZ are quick and fun to drive, but they could use more power and more tire.

The AE86 of Mt. Akina it had the same horsepower, you are thinking of the speed density jdm engines with slightly more hp. that was only in japan for both the aw11 and ae86. however allot of people with ae86's and aw11's swap with jdm engines.

I had a Supercharged AW11 and ended up selling it to go for a turbo SW20. Although the SW20 blows the AW11 out of the water in terms of speed and performance, there's something special about the old mark 1 MR2 that's lost on the later iterations.
