The Honda S2000 is the Final Fantasy 6 of cars. The S2000 is the car you are to like if you want to be cool. Braggers like the S2000 because all the power lies at the top end where they never have to reach and face-facts. This car isn't as fast or powerful as everyone says it is.

The creepiest thing about owning an S2000 is other S2000 owners. They take the "Jeep wave" too far. You see the wave then they make a U-turn and follow you to talk about S2000's. It happened all the time. Friends that didn't believe me I'd let borrow my car and they all experienced it.

I have experienced the exact thing before, for a very strange car, an old 1989 Acura Integra R, my first car. Strange dude had one much like it and ran up beside me on the highway and tried to have a conversation about them at 55. Same dude managed to come across me at my retail job weeks and miles later, tried to start up a conversation again. He quickly realized how creepy it was, never saw him again. Luckily I only get nods and revs from my fellow Pontiac G8 GT owners, we aren't assholes... yet

I love the fact that Honda made ZERO automatic versions of this car. Plus, the S2K never made Honda money, by most accounts it cost them a lot of money to keep the it in production. This thing is like a gift from Honda to their enthusiast fans. You'd be a fool not to accept it.

They were lousy cars with gutless powertrains -- that's why Honda never made money on them. If it had the silky smooth V6 out of first gen NSX, they might have still been building them. But the idiots at Honda saddled this car with the torqueless lump instead.

@@trv88r You're a fucking moron. It made that peak horsepower near a "very usable" 9000 RPMs..... By the time you got into the power band, those pieces of shit already lost the race. I noticed you glossed over the pathetic 160 ft lbs of torque -- less than an Altima sedan of that era. Garbage cars.

@LakeHowellDigitalVideo

@@trv88r My uncle owned one -- and I drove it a lot. The 240 horsepower was made at 8300 RPM -- The engine under 5000 RPM the car was completely gutless. If you wanted to trash the motor and abuse it, it would perform okay. If you look online, S2000 are infamous for blown engines -- and it is a way to buy one cheaply. But they were terrible cars on the street -- because a street race is over by the time an S2000 got into its peak power. As I said earlier, if the S2000 had the V6 out of the NSX -- it would have been an amazing roadster. But saddled with a 4 cylinder motor that only made 150 lbs of torque at its peak -- there were better roadsters built at this time. The BMW Z4 M roadsters were so, so much better than the S2000 at that time.

I had two AP2 S2000's. I tracked them, I played, I learned how to do my brakes for the first time, and I learned how to detail. All of this was thanks to the love I had for my S2K's. This review made me so mad... Then it ended, and I disappointingly looked outside. I looked out into the street to see my... C6.

Wow this was depressing for me. I was a nationally ranked musician in high school who had the potential to do great things in music, Even though i got okay grades in high school, all my teachers would tell my parents i had the potential to be valedictorian like my sister if i wasn't so lazy and unmotivated. I went to bondurant while on vacation and took a driving class, i picked it up really quickly and my instructor told me i had the best car control of anyone he'd taught my age and that my lap times were significantly higher than he'd expect from someone with my lack of experience. My entire life has been a big game of collecting these worthless claims of potential. In truth, i am unable to commit myself to anyone or anything. Who knows, maybe some day ill get some motivation, or discover amphetamines, and be some sort of renaissance man, until then im just a lazy internet dweller who's mom at least thinks he's 'special' and 'talented'. Also, I have a stage II 2006 new GTI if you ever want to review it. I got it from this guy for cheap who didn't want a bunch of questions asked, nothing gone wrong yet and the police haven't shown up at my door, but who knows?

Or just for a cruise around the block with the top down, the car fulfills many people dreams

The S2000's main asset is that it feels like so much fun when you're driving it. You feel like you're zipping around corners and hugging the apex, but you're not. You feel like you're going 110mph, but you're only going 70. You feel like you're doing some mad drifts to compete with the illegal JDM RX7 next to you, but all that's happening is the rear end's wiggling a bit because you turned off traction control. It feels like such an amazing handling car...but the Miata is great because it actually is and actually does do all of those things. The S2000 feels better, it feels more fun and raw than the Miata, but the Miata actually is. The S2000 has a higher top speed and accelerates better, but good luck keeping that speed around the curves, unlike the Miata, which despite being technically slower actually will beat a Mustang on a mountain road.

Have you ever driven an S2000?
@seankurth4371
@seankurth4371 8 жыл бұрын
Paul Tiplea Yes, have you? It feels great, it feels better than the Miata. It's certainly much faster than the Miata. But in actual driving dynamics you'll get humiliated by the Miata in the curves every time. Yeah, you can tune an S2k to drift and corner, but you can also tune a Ford Festiva, if you have to customize it there's really no point. Admittedly the Miata is a very high bar, since its basically the best cornering car in the world, but that's the standard the S2000 held itself to and that's the standard it will be judged by,
@paultiplea
@paultiplea 8 жыл бұрын
I have driven both extensively, and have owned an S2000 in the past. I can not for one second say that the Miata sports superior handling or steering to the S2000. The opposite actually. And I'm not really sure what you mean about drifts. The AP1 S2000 is widely known to be a very tail happy car. I mean they didn't even have traction control. The Miata is a GREAT chassis and handles extremely well, but it is lacking in two other areas that I think are essential: a great engine, and looks. Now looks are subjective so that's just opinion. But you cannot contend that the F20C is one of the greatest engines to be put in a sportscar/roadster. It was and still is a feat of engineering. The car doesn't just "feel" great. It is great. Talking about tuning and mods is irrelevant as any car can be modded.

As an S2K owner for the past 8 years I can say one thing, owning a S2000 is a lot like owning a Jeep Wrangler.. unless you have one.. you just don't get it and like people have mentioned in the comments people sell their S2000s and always come back.. just like Wranglers. The people in the comments don't get it, it's more than just numbers on paper, or what brand it is, what following the car has.. for both of those vehicles it's just different. There's just something about them, they're simply more fun to drive.. which is what matters most.

Reviving an old post. I remember watching this video and wondering why he shat on the car so much. I've got a post floating around here from that time, i'm sure. I'm now going on 16 years of ownership of a 2001. Still remember buying it and the date (March 23rd, 2007). There really isn't a car out there that I would sell my s2000, so I could buy said car. I've grown to compare it to everything I've driven. The closest fun I had was a gutted 98 Dodge Neon ACR, no AC or power steering, that I drove the crap out of. I intended to do a k24A swap, but sold all the components I had and sold the car. Someone eventually did a k24 1st gen neon though. The S2000 is a fun car. A step above a Miata. Don't know anything about the boxter or z3. It is still being raced and still having parts developed for it. It has seen a flood of cheap buys/sells/rebuilt and salvaged title buyers in the last 6-8 years. Which has put it into less than competent hands, and thinned out the availability slightly. A remake would probably put it into sudden value like houses during/after covid.

I can confirm having owned both, it feels the exact same for some reason and I’d never look at other cars or vehicles the same. There’s a fascination with something that feels right to drive and connects you with its movement. Seems ridiculous, it’s just a feeling. More power with other vehicles didn’t equate. OP is right on the money.

Considering the target group of this car, the era it was made, and the money it costed, it is a the best car ever made. Period. - Highest Output per Liter NA production Engine ever made for many many years. - Engine Sound like no other, screaming at 9.200 RPM. - Handling like a razor blade with the most stiff convertible chassis while STILL 50:50 Ratio and lightweight. - Looks that will turn heads ANY time, at ANY place. Design that will last over the years. - Capable of 700+ HP output using stock internals, stock transmission, stock differential, stock chassis. - Reliability of a rock basically. This was built to last. If you are a lazy ass driver who wants 500kgs of Toque @ 1000 RPM, go buy a 5L Diesel Turbo truck. This was meant to be driven at the limits. If you do that, as experts, owners, and people who used it say, "it's an experience like no other" or "puts a smile on your face everytime". There is NOTHING to be compared to this car. And I really mean, NOTHING. The car literally broke more records than any other car out there. PS. Cars like the Honda NSX, the Honda S2000, and the Honda Integra Type-R, literally REDEFINED the whole world of Automotive industry. Just go back, and look at what these things did. Honda. #Raping the Competition since Day One.

Wyvern The diff and the transmission can hold up a lot of power from the engine. I've seen stock diff and trans S2000s producing 600+ HP. But as in any car, the way you drive is plays the biggest role. You can't expect upgrading it to 300-350 hp, adding slick tires, and launching all day long. At some point your are going to brake something. After all it is just metal.

I usually like your reviews, but not this one. You do not understand s2000 at all. Honda knowingly lost money on every s2000 they sold. The car is constructed extremely expensively and conscientiously by dedicated employees at only one location at Takanezawa (高根沢工場)factory in Tochigi prefecture, Japan. It does not share any parts with other Honda cars, except an optional titanium alloy shit knob, which was shared with NSX. F20C engines's cylinder walls are hand polished by the very few qualified technicians, who were permitted to assemble it. In the age of massively rationalized modular engineering, what other car maker would do that? Honda only charged about $34,000 for S2000. Just think about it. They did it for pride and joy of manufacturing an excellent sports car. You just don't get it Bro! Sociologically or in any way. From Japan

I was kind of considering selling my NB Miata and buying an S2000. That desire may have been nipped in the bud by this video. After thoughts of an S2000 whithered, I started thinking about what else would fit as a Miata replacement. I thought about a 370Z. At about the 5:20 mark my thoughts drifted to, "An early C6 would be nice." Then you almost immediately delivered that punchline. Beautiful.

I have an Nb miata as well and of course, like everyone else, I have the same thoughts about upgrading to s2000. There is nothing that quite feels like the miata except old british roadsters. If you remotely enjoy the nimble feel of your miata, the s2000 won't be a good replacement. The s2000 feels light but it's no miata.

The problem I always had with the V Tec is that you have to rev the hell out of it to get any power. That's fine if I'm on an open road where I can wind it out, but when I'm driving around town, I want some low-end grunt. To that end, I think the Miata will always be a more capable car.

S2000 makes plenty of power and doesn't need to reach the stock VTEC switch over for driving around town. It's low-end grunt is higher than the Miata's high-end grunt. If you're so worried about the switch over for driving around town, test pipe/hfc and a tune, drop the switch over to around 4K rpms and then you can stop light race with all the cool kids.

Where did you get this 'excuses' shit? The video was about 'potential.' And yes, I understand and accept that Honda is the living embodiment of wasted potential, but I'm not a Honda fanboy, I'm just a person who recognizes that one car Honda built is better than one car Toyota built and that some English major who drives an Echo using all the trite excuses he can pull out of his eloquent little ass isn't going to change the fact. S2000 > MR2.
@awesomeologyism
@awesomeologyism 10 жыл бұрын
Et B And no one is arguing that this S2000 is better than the MR2 that was built 9 years before it. It's all about what the car itself means to the person driving it. The DeLorean DMC-12 is classified as a "Sports Car," is it as fast as an S200? Hell no it isn't. But I would guarantee that you can find plenty of people that would take it over the Honda The Whole "Wasted Potential" thing is a slight to people that buy the S2K, and just use it like any other Daily Driver. They have it for the "Potential" of what it can do, while never actually doing it. Listen to the video starting at 4:25 , where he mentions the merits of the car

@@FranciscoFJM Fast, fun, analog Japanese cars such a high price since they don't make cars like that anymore. Add to that they're liability and driving experience of an S2000 and you get high values in years to come. Right now they're value increases 25 to 30% each year and they are fetching 25,000 in decent condition with high miles as is. It's not that much of a prediction, we can look at what all the nineties Japanese cars did. Type R are worth $60,000. Car buyers don't get lucky they see past trends buy up cars that have the same stats that haven't gone up in value yet.

Hey Mr. Regular. I'd like to say that I appreciate your reviews not just being entertaining, but also quite convicting. I haven't particularly fit *most* of the stereotypes portrayed in your reviews, but this one was different. There was a phrase of great meaning to me. These words have been ringing through my mind relentlessly since I heard them from you: "Potential is wasted energy." I've been told, in particular earnest by my English teacher, that I have "potential". "The genius that could be", she's said. I've never believed it. But this is something that I've really had to think about lately, and I think you have set me on a path that will not be changed by hand of Man or God. I know you probably won't see this, but thank you. Take it sleazy.

that's pretty subjective right there. I personally haven't driven either but from what I can tell, for lots of people the additional power and probably same amount of quality handling in the S2000 might amount to more fun. I can't think of why the miata is better other than the fact that it's lighter and looks differently.
@TheOklep
@TheOklep 8 жыл бұрын
+andezzat Weight has the biggest impact on handling, and difference of 300kg is HUGE. S2K has great engine, but other than that, it is nothing special. Who wants more power, he can put turbo into miata, and you can get 250whp like a breeze. And it will kill everything for fraction of money. But again, I dont think that power/speed in roadsters is important. Thats why speedsters exist
@andezzat
@andezzat 8 жыл бұрын
hmm maybe but 1300kg is still considered light. and 6.5s 0-100 in an NA i4 2L? count me fkn impressed! it's a great car, and I'd pick it over the miata if I had the money.
@TheOklep
@TheOklep 8 жыл бұрын
+andezzat IMO, 1300kg is not light at all. Here in Europe, it is average weight for everyday car, so. I would never buy s2k because it is way overpriced for what it is. I can buy Opel Speedster (which is Lotus Elise with different badge) for the same amount of money, and it is car that is lightyears ahead of s2k. 0-100 in mid 5s. And again, if you care only about power, you can build/buy turbo miata for like half of the price s2k or maybe even less, and it will be in low 5s, and better in terms of handling

On busy 4+ lane roads, you might wait hours trying to turn left when both sides are clear. If the oncoming side is clear, it's perfectly fine to turn into the turn lane and then merge when safe into the travel lanes. In certain traffic conditions you'll never get out otherwise.
@Synystr7
@Synystr7 7 жыл бұрын
People who think that its better crossing 4 lanes of traffic instead of 2 lanes followed by a merge into traffic need to really read the driver's learning manual again... Or look at side impact crash statistics and where they most occur.

The only reason I don't approve of the middle lane merge is because I ride a motorcycle and I can't be sure you see me. More people die on bikes because of cagers pulling out in front of/merging into them than most other causes combined, so it's a very real concern.

I have to say, this review saddens me. The first S2000 review was funny with the novelty plushes and dick holes, but this one was just a borderline attack about "potential". To me, this is one of the most realized, fully fleshed out sports car built. Ignore the bench racers who've hardly even seen one, to live with this car is brilliant. It's overhyped facts and figures aren't the point, it's what this car can do. It can make normal driving cool. You can daily this car and it's easy, it's just a used Honda. Which means every morning you can walk out and see this car waiting for you, your work commute can mean a top down jaunt in this car. And let me speak from experience here, that is fucking awesome. Perhaps the stigma is more ingrained in the AP1 cars, perhaps the third time will be the charm, but please RCR you have to review my AP2 S2000. Perhaps a softer face and a light blue complexion will help you see what is so imminently good about these cars that was missed the first go rounds...

Owner of a 2008 S2000. Don't fit your owner descriptions but laughed my rear differential off. You were right about it being the last 2-seater before moving to a Corvette. Let me know if you ever want to review a CBR1000RR-R RRRRRRR SP ... if Honda ever gets around to delivering instead of delaying.

You guys are hilarious. Does nobody understand what it means to be an "artist"? We call them content creators here on KZbin, I guess. RCR makes the videos he wants, the way he wants because its what makes sense to him at the time and he's the one in charge. He can say whatever the fuck he wants. Nothing here is absolute truth, but we also know him enough to assume there are likely no lies, or if there are, they are likely sarcastic, and noticeably so. The S2K has lots of potential. That is spot on. He likely emphasized this, understanding exactly the kind of following and anti-following this car has. Yes, it's more expensive than cars that are faster. Yes, it can be sluggish outside of its powerband. But any of you seriously trashing this car have never driven one. RCR has driven hundreds of different cars, and is in fact a honda fan. Even then, I'm sure he doesnt find this car to fit his bill in one way or another. That doesn't mean it can't fit yours. Drive these cars for yourselves before you say anything, but please, please continue being butthurt about what is said on RCR. It makes it all the more entertaining. P.S. there is much more to a car than seconds per dollar.

An S2000 is faster around Tsukuba than a LAST GEN 2010 Mustang GT Only the MKVI GT was faster. The Ecoboost Mustang was also slower. RCR not knowing shit about the handling of cars as always.

Best of both worlds: Grab a highly used one, sell the drivetrain to a dedicated Honda nut, and grab a C6's LS2 V-8 and TR-6060 tranny. Maybe even build the engine to be able to make better use of the S2k's 9000 RPM tach.

Sema? This seems the kind of place wher drag races happen. Drag racing isn't real racing... It's like saying cheerleading is a sport. Please, put these Solstices and Skys around Tsukuba, Laguna Seca, VIR... I guarantee, that S2K will make donuts around them and still finish first.

The F20C has the greatest torque value for most NA engines and it's one of the highest if not the only highest reving engine out of Japan from the factory and for the road. The beefiest part of the torque curve is around 7-9K yes... I admit that BUT if you stroke the engine to a higher CC say 3L, the torque curve will decrease. What do I mean decrease? If stock, the curve would be around 6-9K range but if it's stroked, the bandwidth would be around 5-9K which is the same as city driving standards as most cars never drive past the 5K rev mark during city driving. I had experience driving one of my old neighbour's S2K which he stroked it to 2.8L and had his ECU done for making the car pick up "boost" (VTEC works much like a turbo but no spooling so most Honda fans don't call it VTEC. We call it boost.) and it's pumping almost 320BHP with such minor tune and the car shifts and launches well at the 5K range.

Speed Reaper "VTEC works much like a turbo but no spooling" This is *so* wrong its giving me a headache. "so most Honda fans don't call it VTEC. We call it boost" Wut But more importantly: "I had experience driving one of my old neighbour's S2K which he stroked it to 2.8L " Who the heck makes a 2.8 liter stroker kit for the s2k? The largest kits im familiar with go with a 97mm stroke, and 90mm bore- Which to my knowledge, is really about as big as you have room for, bring the engine up to 2.4. Id LOVE to know how they turned it into a 2.8.
@MrLolx2u
@MrLolx2u 9 жыл бұрын
SidewaysGts The engine on the S2K can and quite a few were stroked to 2.8L. Even J's racing made one NA machine stroked to 2.8L which revs to 10,000RPM. Honda drivers call it VTEC but still, as an internal joke, we all call it boost because it works almost the same as turbo lag when it just does not have power at the lower range but once you hit the powerband, it just shoots forward. My nation had strict modification rules and our cars are fucking expensive. One of the worst places to but a car so all we had for Boy Racers are S2Ks, MX-5s, Civics from EG to EK series and at best, R35 GTR. Heck. We only have 1... 1 surviving 3rd gen BNR32 proper Nismo GTR Skyline. Besides, the F20C was not the only engine fitted to the S2K. There's also the F22C for later models which JDM and American Market got. They ARE 2.8L stroked S2K but mostly in racing scene. I might be wrong about my neighbour's car being 2.8L. Might be a 2.6L which I know was very common besides the 2.4L but that's not the point. So far, there's not a lot of NA motor that runs pure to 9,000RPM straight out of the factory except Ferrari V8s.

Speed Reaper "and quite a few were stroked to 2.8L. Even J's racing made one NA machine stroked to 2.8L which revs to 10,000RPM." Last I looked, Js racing ran a 2.2 @ 10k rpms, and theyve been running that setup for many, _many_ years. If you know of them having run a 2.8@10k rpms, awesome! But please cite a source. Id love to read about it :) (Ive never seen it, and cant find anything about it.) "Besides, the F20C was not the only engine fitted to the S2K.: Never said otherwise. "They ARE 2.8L stroked S2K but mostly in racing scene. I might be wrong about my neighbour's car being 2.8L. " Awesome. Sources? "Might be a 2.6L which I know was very common" Nowhere have I been nor am familiar with (America, Japan, and australia) is 2.6 "common". At all, even slightly. Again, you can readily find a plethora of 2.4 liter kits, and 2.2 kits for the f20 are common. But 2.6? Common? Again, please cite your references. I wont doubt you, but Id like to know more than "some guy on youtube said...". Maybe since theyre so common you can referene the bore/stroke theyre using to obtain this displacement? Ive done some searching, for 2.8, and now 2.6- Im not finding diddly, let alone finding enough to warrant calling it "common". But I readily admit I may very well be missing something. But thats why Id love to see your references :) Cheers and thanks.

You shouldn't call it boost since its valve timing not forced induction. It's clever valve timing that gives all the power to the top end and gives the illusion of a turbo. Vtec is not boost.
