Beast Wars is such a wild (hah) ride because one episode culminates in a fart joke, and another episode will be about Transmutate and his horrible tragic existence or Dinobot meditating about his destiny.

I think the animators were doing close ups on their faces at the start just so they can do a reveal of sorts when they transform for the first time. Also I got a headcannon that they scream because of how their beast forms work. They're supposed to work like radiation suits, so they have to completely cover their robot parts. And from how they flex when moving in beast mode, it stands to reason that this skin is connected. And Optimus shows that he feels whatever happens to it when Meg's bit his leg, just like normal skin. So conclusion: They scream cause their skin rips apart in order to transform.
